Thoracic and neck trauma. Part four.

Previous parts to this series on thoracic and neck trauma discussed the anatomy and physiology of the thorax, assessment and initial nursing interventions, imaging and adjuncts to diagnosis. Part 2 described specific chest wall and lung injuries, types of pneumothoraces and their diagnosis and management. Section 3 examined other types of thoracic injuries and their management, such as trauma to the diaphragm and heart. This final part provides a brief but concise overview of neck anatomy, trauma and management.

Mental Health Nursing Simulation to Develop the Therapeutic Use of Self.

BACKGROUND: Although simulation is well established for procedural and acute care skills, mental health nursing simulation focused on the therapeutic use of self remains underrepresented in the literature. This article describes the design, implementation, and educational contribution of three theory-informed mental health nursing simulations developed to support competency-based psychiatric nursing education. METHOD: Guided by Peplau's interpersonal relations theory, three simulations were developed addressing motivational interviewing for alcohol use disorder, trauma-informed care for intim

Metaphorical perceptions of surgical nurses regarding care for earthquake victims.

BACKGROUND: The physical, psychological, and social effects of the earthquake affect a person's functionality directly. It challenges individuals because it is often traumatizing, intense fear is experienced, and it is unpredictable, uncontrollable, and destructive. Nurses are one of the professional groups that have important duties in social disasters, and they are constantly exposed to the details of the traumatic situation, sometimes physically and sometimes by listening. To understand the severity of the trauma caused by this exposure, it is important to understand the emotions and though

Staff exposure to ionizing radiation in a major trauma centre.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present paper was to determine the safety of staff members with regard to ionizing radiation in a major trauma centre in a 19-month period. METHODS AND RESULTS: A group of five doctors, five nurses and a trauma orderly wore personal radiation monitors under lead aprons while at work. The highest individual cumulative result after 586 days was 0.18 mSv for a nurse. If the exposure rate to ionizing radiation was constant, this would be equivalent to 0.114 mSv per year. Therefore the results are well below the recommended occupational dose limit of 20 mSv per year.

Using a trauma-informed care framework to explore social climate and borderline personality disorder in forensic inpatient settings.

Tensions between therapeutic and security needs on forensic wards can create a social climate which is challenging for both mental health nurses and patients. Social climate refers to the physical, social and emotional conditions of a forensic ward which influence how these environments are experienced. For patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), previous trauma means that the social climate of forensic settings may be experienced as retraumatising, negatively impacting the outcomes and wellbeing of both patients and mental health nurses. Trauma-informed care (TIC) has been offere

A rare complication of pediatric catheterization.

Catheterization is a safe and effective nursing intervention that is taught to almost every nursing student in the country. Most of the complications students are encouraged to prevent include: infection, skin irritation, trauma due to failing to release the bubble when removing the catheter, and obstruction. Rarely are additional problems encountered. Case studies can often alert us to the possibility of rare and unanticipated complications. The following is an example of just such a case study.

Can nurses working in remote units accurately request and interpret radiographs?

OBJECTIVE: Recent changes in the NHS have seen nurses take on roles that are traditionally filled by doctors, leading to the development of emergency nurse practitioners (ENPs). In addition to this, increasing interest has focused on telemedicine (literally, medicine at a distance) as a way of supporting remote emergency departments and minor injuries units from larger centres. The vast majority of these consultations are related to peripheral limb trauma and require a radiograph to be viewed as an integral part of the telemedical consultation. The aim of this study was therefore to determine

The effect of extended continuous nursing strategy applied to patients with mild brain injury on their quality of life and self-efficacy.

Postoperative rehabilitation of craniocerebral injury requires a long process and has many complications. In addition, patients with severe craniocerebral injury are usually accompanied by impaired nervous system function, which will affect the patients' normal life and work in a period of time after surgery. Reasonable rehabilitation nursing plays an active role in restructuring central nervous system function and coordinating muscle and joint activities. Since the rehabilitation of cerebral trauma is a long process, how to ensure the patients to carry out limb and brain function as well as s

Danger, Duty, Resilience: A Phenomenological Study of Nurse Anesthetists' Lived Experiences During the Rwanda Marburg Outbreak.

Marburg virus disease, a hemorrhagic fever without approved vaccine or cure, emerged in Rwanda in late 2024. During the outbreak, nurse anesthetists provided critical care to severely ill patients, including infected colleagues. Healthcare workers comprised most confirmed cases, with anesthetists and nurses among the earliest fatalities. The voices of nurse anesthetists reveal the essence of the phenomenon. This study used the methods of inductive phenomonology to discover the essential meaning of the lived experiences of nurse anesthetists working in Kigali referral hospitals during the outbr

Orthopedic problems of the upper extremities. Assessment and diagnosis.

1. Cumulative trauma or repetitive motion disorders are among the most commonly reported occupational illness, and mainly affect the neck and upper extremities. 2. The etiology of cumulative trauma disorders includes nerve compression secondary to inflammation and tendinitis secondary to microtearing at tendon insertions and/or friction irritation of the tendons. 3. Work postures, such as forward flexed position of head, neck, and shoulders; static loading of muscles; as well as repetitive motions can cause cumulative trauma disorders or aggravate pre-existing problems. 4. The occupational hea

AT 5.00 am one Friday morning a 19-year-old woman was brought into the Accident & Emergency (A&E) department following a head on collision with a van. The young woman had sustained severe head injuries, along with a fractured pelvis and a ruptured spleen. Following resuscitative surgery, the patient was taken to the intensive care unit, where she remained unconscious following her head injury. Two patients from the van were admitted to A&E with minor injuries, and were discharged home mid-morning. When staff checked the woman's belongings and listed them in a property book, they discovered whi

Crush injuries: a case of entrapment.

Crush injuries result from prolonged entrapment or immobilization. The resultant complications can be devastating and fatal. There is significant tissue injury and muscle necrosis that may lead to one or more complications including compartment syndrome, rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, and coagulopathies. Using a case study format, this article discusses the chain of events surrounding crush injuries and the nursing management issues important for minimizing further complications for critically ill patients.

Time Heals Some Wounds? Burnout but Not Secondary Traumatic Stress in Critical Care Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Burnout among new nurses has been widely documented. Less is known about how years of professional experience relate to distinct components of professional quality of life, including compassion satisfaction and secondary traumatic stress. Early-career nurses appear particularly vulnerable to occupational strain, warranting examination of how years of experience may influence perceptions of professional well-being. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between years of nursing experience and professional quality of life among critical care nurses. METHODS: A quantitative, cross-s

Trauma-Related Shame: An Evolutionary Concept Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Feelings of shame after interpersonal assault directly impact survivor well-being. Although the concept of trauma-related shame has been well defined and applied in psychology, the direct application to nursing care for victims of sexual assault is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform an interdisciplinary concept analysis to clarify and synthesize the concept of trauma-related shame as it relates to interpersonal assault. METHOD: A multidisciplinary literature search was conducted using the term "trauma-related shame." Article titles and abstracts were reviewe

Critical factors shaping vicarious posttraumatic growth in nurses: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses face high levels of occupational stress due to direct and indirect trauma exposure, resulting in psychological challenges such as anxiety, depression, and secondary traumatic stress. However, vicarious posttraumatic growth (VPTG), a positive outcome of trauma exposure, can improve resilience and professional satisfaction. Understanding the factors affecting VPTG is key to developing strategies that enhance nurse well-being. This study sought to explore the various factors that affect VPTG among clinical nurses, using a cross-sectional design. METHODS: A cross-sectional surv

Promoting Teen Mothers' Mental Health.

In this second article in a two-part series, we call for the integration of strengths-based and trauma-informed care into services for teen mothers. Nurses working with teen mothers in health clinics, schools and home visiting programs can play a pivotal role in promoting their mental health. Many teen mothers have high levels of psychological distress and histories of adverse experiences that cannot be ignored, and cannot solely be addressed by referral to mental health services. Nurses must be prepared to assess for trauma and be open to listening to teen mothers' experiences. Principles of
