Prevalence and molecular identification of fish-borne trematodes in endemic communities in Caraga region, Mindanao, Philippines.

The fish-borne trematodes are a group of parasitic flatworms whose life cycle successively passes through various snails and fresh and brack … seholds in the study communities and from 92 dogs and cats. These were examined microscopically for trematode infections. Molecular analysis of microscopy-positive fecal samples was conducted using the internal transcribed spacer 2 region (ITS2) gene. Further, household-heads were surveyed to investigate risk factors for infection. The overall prevalence of infection …

Trematode recolonization in first intermediate snail hosts after large-scale stream restoration.

BACKGROUND: Parasite recolonization and succession following disturbance are inherently linked to the recovery of free-living species, yet p … pecies were examined, harboring 16 trematode species at an overall prevalence of 7.8%. The onset of trematode infections coincided with the establishment of native snail hosts, particularly Ampullaceana balthica, which harbored the highest trematode richness and overall prevalence. Although snail host abundance varied with season and distance to the river mouth, recol …

Prevalence and distribution of trematodes hosted by Bithynia siamensis in Southern Thailand.

This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of larval trematode infections in bithyniid snails across five provinces in southern Thailand. A total of 1,413 Bithynia siamensis snails were collected between October 2021 and October 2022 using handpicking and scooping methods. Among these, 844 were identified as B. s. siamensis and 569 as B. s. goniomphalos. The snail samples were examined for parasitic infections in the laboratory using shedding and crushing methods. Among the 27 sampling sites, snails from 6 sites were infected with various trematode species (infection rate: 4.95%, 70/1,413)…

Personality Influences Risk of Parasitism in Fish.

Influence of fish personality on infection rate is poorly studied. In the experiments on young-of-the-year Oncorhynchus mykiss and cercariae of the trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, we tested the hypothesis that infection rate differs between more and less active ("bold" and "shy") fish. Will individual differences in infection persist upon re-infection? Fish serve as a second intermediate host for this trematode. Positive correlation was found between the results of consecutive infections. Accumulation of parasites with successive infections leads to an aggregated distribution of D. pse

De Novo Transcriptome Characterization of a Sterilizing Trematode Parasite (Microphallus sp.) from Two Species of New Zealand Snails.

Snail-borne trematodes represent a large, diverse, and evolutionarily, ecologically, and medically important group of parasites, often imposing strong selection on their hosts and causing host morbidity and mortality. Even so, there are very few genomic and transcriptomic resources available for this important animal group. We help to fill this gap by providing transcriptome resources from trematode metacercariae infecting two congeneric snail species, Potamopyrgus antipodarum and P. estuarinus This genus of New Zealand snails has gained prominence in large part through the development of P. a

Matrix-Dependent Sensitivity of Two Pan-Trematode PCR Assays for Detecting Schistosoma spp. in Clinical Human Samples.

BACKGROUND: Schistosoma spp. are trematodes occurring in tropical endemic areas but can be imported to non-endemic regions as causes of travel-associated infections. In this study, two pan-trematode-specific real-time PCR assays were evaluated for their diagnostic sensitivity in detecting Schistosoma spp. DNA in diagnostic human samples. METHODS: Two previously described pan-trematode-specific real-time PCR assays were comparatively assessed using diagnostic samples containing DNA of either the S. haematobium complex or the S. mansoni complex, as confirmed by Schistosoma species complex-speci

Exposing the Barcoding Void: An Integrative Approach to Study Snail-Borne Parasites in a One Health Context.

Trematodes are snail-borne parasites of major zoonotic importance that infect millions of people and animals worldwide and frequently hybridize with closely related species. Therefore, it is desirable to study trematodiases in a One Health framework, where human and animal trematodes are considered equally important. It is within this framework that we set out to study the snail and trematode communities in four artificial lakes and an abattoir in Zimbabwe. Trematode infections in snails were detected through multiplex PCR protocols. Subsequently, we identified snails by sequencing a partial m…

Lifecycle of an introduced Dollfustrema (Bucephalidae) trematode in the Tone River system, Japan.

During 2021 through 2023, the golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei and freshwater fishes were sampled from 28 sites in the Tone River system, Japan, and adult trematodes of Dollfustrema were found in the fishes. Molecular and morphological analyses based on 28S rDNA and the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region revealed the trematode as 'Dollfustrema hefeiense', previously reported in Mainland China and likely introduced to Japan. Given that its scientific name was considered invalid, we re-described the species as Dollfustrema invadens n. sp. Additionally, the DNA-based survey helped clarify the trematode's lif

[Therapeutic possibilities in diseases caused by intestinal parasites].

Compatible and efficient drugs for the therapy, caused by protozoal- or helminthic-infections, are available today. Many of them are not registered in Austria. Metronidazole, Mebendazole and Praziquantel are particularly effective. Most protozoal-infections can be treated with metronidazole. Mebendazole can be used against numerous nematode-infections (Ascariasis, Trichuriasis, Oxyuriasis, Ancylostomiasis), Niclosamide against cestode-infections (Taeniasis, Hymenolepiasis, Diphyllobothriasis), whereas, Praziquantel is applied against trematode-infections.

Harmful Parasitoses on the Russian Southern Far East under Climatic and Demographic Changes.

Progressive expansion of the most hazardous human parasitoses caused by trematodes, cestodes and nematodes has been found on the south of the Russian Far East. Decelerating expansion of the trematode Clonorchis sinensis, an agent of clonorchiasis towards the southern Primorye Territory from the Amur River basin, that began 10-15 years ago, was revealed. A prognosis was made on the activation of the natural foci of clonorchiasis and paragonimiasis. Circulation possibilities are discussed of the highly pathogenic trematode Pagonimus heterotremusar in the South Asian regional ecosystems. Our expe

A rapid diagnostic multiplex PCR approach for xenomonitoring of human and animal schistosomiasis in a 'One Health' context.

Studying the epidemiology of schistosomiasis-the most prevalent gastropod-borne human disease and an economic burden for the livestock industry-relies on adequate monitoring tools. Here we describe a molecular assay for detecting human and animal African schistosome species in their planorbid gastropod host (xenomonitoring) using a two-step approach. First, schistosome infections are detected and discriminated from other trematode infections using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that includes a trematode-specific marker (in 18S rDNA), a Schistosoma genus-specific marker (in interna…
