[Short-latency, brainstem, trigeminal evoked-potentials].

Short-latency, evoked-potentials were recorded from over the scalp in response to electrical stimulation of the upper lip, using the Microshev 4000 equipment (Microshev Co., Efrat). Normative data were obtained from 35 normal volunteers. The brain-stem, trigeminal evoked-potentials (BTEP) consisted of 4 distinct, well-reproduced waves evoked in less than 10 msec. The waves, named after their respective latencies, are thought to be generated in the preganglionic trigeminal nerve (T1), the postganglionic nerve entry zone (T2), in the trigeminal nucleus (T3) and the upper brainstem (T5). BTEP was

Episodic exposure to ethanol during development differentially affects brainstem nuclei in the macaque.

Neuronal vulnerability to ethanol may be non-specific, i.e., vulnerability may be conferred by the developmental state of the population or by the site of derivation. To address these issues, the effect of developmental exposure to ethanol on three brainstem nuclei; the trigeminal motor (MoV), facial motor (MoVII) and medial superior olivary (MSO) nuclei was determined. MoVII and MSO are generated at the same time and from the same rhombomere, r4. MoV is generated earlier from r2. Macaca nemestrina were exposed to ethanol or a control solution one day per week for six or 24 weeks of gestation.

Detectability of neural tracts and nuclei in the brainstem utilizing 3DAC-PROPELLER.

Despite clinical importance of identifying exact anatomical location of neural tracts and nuclei in the brainstem, no neuroimaging studies have validated the detectability of these structures. The aim of this study was to assess the detectability of the structures using three-dimensional anisotropy contrast-periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction (3DAC-PROPELLER) imaging. Forty healthy volunteers (21 males, 19 females; 19-53 years, average 23.4 years) participated in this study. 3DAC-PROPELLER axial images were obtained with a 3T-MR system at four levels of

Inhibition of glutamatergic trigeminal nucleus caudalis- vestibular nucleus projection neurons attenuates vestibular dysfunction in the chronic-NTG model of migraine.

BACKGROUND: Prior clinical studies suggest a shared mechanism between vestibular symptoms and migraine headache. However, the specific neuroanatomical substrate connecting vestibular symptoms with migraine remains to be largely unknown. Thus, the aim of this study was to further investigate the mechanisms that whether and how trigeminovestibular neurons produce effects on neuronal activation in vestibular nucleus (VN). METHODS: A chronic-NTG rat model was established by recurrent intermittent administration of nitroglycerin (NTG). Pain- and vestibular-related behaviors were assessed. To selec

Temporal characteristics of astrocytic activation in the TNC in a mice model of pain induced by recurrent dural infusion of inflammatory soup.

BACKGROUND: Astrocytic activation might play a significant role in the central sensitization of chronic migraine (CM). However, the temporal characteristics of the astrocytic activation in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) and the molecular mechanism under the process remain not fully understood. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the duration and levels change of astrocytic activation and to explore the correlation between astrocytic activation and the levels change of cytokines release. METHODS: We used a mice model induced by recurrent dural infusion of inflammatory soup (IS). T

Activity during mastication of periodontal mechanosensitive neurons of the trigeminal subnucleus oralis of the rabbit.

1. The activity of mechanosensitive neurons was examined before and during mastication. One hundred and seventy-eight neurons were recorded in the rostral parts of the trigeminal sensory nuclei of 20 rabbits anesthetized with urethan. Twenty-eight neurons received inputs from the periodontal mechanoreceptors, all on the ipsilateral side. Nineteen had receptive fields that were restricted to one tooth; 2 could be activated from more than 1 tooth, and 6 included parts of the mucosa. Only the latter were spontaneously active. 2. All periodontal neurons with a mandibular input responded to graded

Contralateral hemiparesis following herpes zoster ophthalmicus.

A case of herpes zoster ophthalmicus was followed, after a latent period of four weeks, by contralateral hemiparesis. An attempt is made to clarify the anatomical relationships involved in the pathogenesis of postherpetic cerebral complications. Detailed presentation of neuropathological findings in this case may provide evidence of vasculitis in the syndrome, with better understanding of the pathological anatomy.

Hearing loss after microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia.

Of 21 patients examined audiometrically before and after microvascular decompression of the trigeminal nerve, five (23.8%) had postoperative hearing impairment. A middle ear effusion was found in three (14.3%), probably caused by mastoid cell opening. A retrocochlear lesion in the other patients was caused by transferred pressure on the cochlear nuclei or by traction on the nerve. Vascular perfusion problems were also possible but are difficult to document.

Descending projections to the hindbrain and spinal cord in the paddlefish Polyodon spathula.

In vertebrates, almost all motor neurons innervating skeletal muscles are located in the hindbrain and spinal cord, and all brain centers that control behavior have descending projections into these parts of the central nervous system. With tracer injections into the spinal cord and hindbrain, we have studied cell groups with descending projections in the paddlefish. Spinal cord injections reveal retrogradely labeled cells in all reticular and raphe nuclei, as well as the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle. Additional cell groups with projections to the spinal cord are the nucleus of

Origin of innervation in the feline ophthalmic artery.

In this study, we investigate the innervation to the feline ophthalmic artery by the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) tracing method. Five adult cats with body weights ranging between 2.0 and 3.0 kg were used. Under microscopic dissection, the ophthalmic artery was identified and isolated. A gelfoam (Upjohn Co.), 1 x 3 mm in size, containing 0.1 ml of HRP was applied to the prepared artery segment for 2 h. The cat was sacrificed 3 days later. The trigeminal, stellate, superior cervical, middle cervical and nodal ganglia, and oculomotor, trochlear and abducens nuclei were removed, sectioned and sta

Neural substrates for reflex salivation induced by taste, mechanical, and thermal stimulation of the oral region in decerebrate rats.

In order to investigate the neural mechanisms of reflex salivary secretion, experiments were carried out on anesthetized, decerebrate rats from which the volumes of submandibular salivary secretion and the efferent discharges in the preganglionic parasymapathetic fibers innervating the submandibular gland were recorded. Salivary secretion was induced by either infusing a taste solution, or an aliquot of hot water (45-55 degrees C) into the oral cavity, or by pinching the frontal parts of the oral region with a pair of forceps. The reflex salivation induced by noxious thermal and mechanical sti

Immunofluorescence studies on the pathogenesis of hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus infection in pigs after oronasal inoculation.

Hemagglutinating encephalomyelitis virus (HEV; also designated vomiting and wasting disease virus) was inoculated oronasally in 14 colostrum-deprived pigs at the day of birth. Anorexia and vomition were seen after 4 days. Pigs were killed at different times after inoculation, and the results of the examination by immunofluorescent antibody technique revealed that the epithelial cells of nasal mucosa, tonsils, lungs, and small intestine served as sites of primary viral replication. After the local replication near the sites of entry, the virus spread via peripheral nervous system to the CNS. Du

[Treatment of atypical post-traumatic and postoperative facial neuralgias by chronic stimulation. Apropos of 2 cases, with review of the literature].

This article describes the case of two patients suffering from deafferentation pain after surgery or traumatic lesions in the area of the peripheric trigeminal branches on the Gasserian ganglion. Chronic electrical stimulation by an electrode implanted in the Gasserian ganglion led to a good permanent result in both cases, within a follow-up period of one year and one year and a half, respectively. The pre-operative test was carried out percutaneously via the foramen ovale, the definitive implantation by surgery with subtemporal access. This method can only be used when at least part of the ga

Noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation and the trigeminal autonomic reflex: An fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: The trigeminal autonomic reflex is a physiologic reflex that plays a crucial role in primary headache and particularly in trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias, such as cluster headache. Previous studies have shown that this reflex can be modulated by the vagus nerve, leading to an inhibition of the parasympathetic output of the reflex in healthy participants. The aim of the present study was to characterize neural correlates of the modulatory effect of noninvasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) on the trigeminal autonomic reflex. METHODS: Twenty-one healthy participants were included

Differences between episodic and chronic tension-type headaches in nociceptive-specific trigeminal pathways.

BACKGROUND: The trigeminal nociceptive system plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of tension-type headaches (TTH). OBJECTIVE: This study investigated and compared nociceptive-specific trigeminal pathways in patients with episodic and chronic TTH (ETTH and CTTH, respectively) using the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR) and nociceptive trigeminocervical reflex (nTCR). METHODS: We recorded nBR and nTCR in patients with ETTH and CTTH, and healthy controls using concentric electrodes and subsequently compared the threshold (i.e. sensory, pain) and parameters of reflex (i.e. the R2 component

Trigemino-autonomic headache related to Gasperini syndrome.

We report the association of ipsilateral trigemino-autonomic headache to a case of right-sided nuclear facial and abducens palsy (Gasperini syndrome), ipsilateral hypacusis and right hemiataxia, caused by the occlusion of the right anterior inferior cerebellar artery. Short-lasting attacks of mild to moderate ipsilateral fronto-periorbital head pain, accompanied by lacrimation and mild conjunctival injection during more severe attacks, were present from the onset of symptoms, with a gradual worsening over the next few months and remitting during naproxen therapy. Identification of ultrasonic vocalization substrates determined by electrical stimulation applied to the medulla oblongata in the rat.

The aim of the present investigation was to identify the neural structures, within the rat medulla, that are responsible for rodent ultrasound production. Sound producing substrates were found to be located in the reticular formation and some cranial nerve nuclei as well as several other nuclei situated in the lateral and dorsomedial portions of the medulla. To estimate the degree of involvement in the generation of ultrasound signals, the sound response latencies were measured for each structure. The lateral reticular nucleus and the facial nucleus showed latencies that were significantly sho

The brain stem in psychosis.

The brain stems of 24 mental hospital patients and 10 control patients were examined. Ten mental hospital patients were either deluded or auditorily hallucinated in clear consciousness, and of this group 8 presented with a diagnosis of schizophrenic syndrome. The nature and significance of lesions found in the midline reticular nuclei and the trigeminal n. are discussed. The results, and the dearth of other published material on this subject, indicate the need for further work in this field.

Peripheral and central innervation pattern of mechanosensory neurons in the trigeminal ganglion.

The trigeminal ganglion (TG) comprises primary sensory neurons responsible for orofacial sensations, subsequently projecting to the trigeminal nuclei in the brainstem. However, the circuit basis of nasal mechanosensation is not well characterized. Here we elucidate the anatomical organization of both peripheral and central projections of the TG. We found that the non-peptidergic nociceptor, MAS-related G protein-coupled receptor member D positive (MrgprD+) neurons in the TG densely innervate the nasal mucosa, whereas the low-threshold mechanoreceptors subtypes rarely innervate the nasal mucosa

Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Parasomnias and Migraine: A Role of Orexinergic Projections.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep and migraine share a common pathophysiological substrate, although the underlying mechanisms are unknown. The serotonergic and orexinergic systems are both involved in the regulation of sleep/wake cycle, and numerous studies show that both are involved in the migraine etiopathogenesis. These two systems are anatomically and functionally interconnected. Our hypothesis is that in migraine a dysfunction of orexinergic projections on the median raphe (MR) nuclei, interfering with serotonergic regulation, may cause Non-Rapid Eye Movement parasomnias, such as somnambulism.
