[The natural history of tuberculosis infection and skin tuberculin reaction].

Though most often asymptomatic, tuberculous infection induces a delayed hypersensitivity reaction in the host by activating cellular immunity thus rendering the host refractory, "a priori", to a new infection; at least provided that the infecting dose is not massive or that the immune system of the host is not compromised. Less that ten per cent of immuno-competent individuals infected by Mycobacterium tuberculosis will develop tuberculous disease during their life. The intradermal reaction (IDR to tuberculin) in revealing delayed hypersensitivity to Mycobacterial antigens is in the absence of…

Tuberculin skin-test-induced uveitis in the absence of tuberculosis.

A 16-year-old Caucasian girl who showed no evidence of tuberculosis or other systemic disease developed acute panuveitis progressing to bilateral serous retinal detachments following purified protein derivative (PPD) skin testing on two separate occasions separated by an interval of 8 years. Both episodes responded rapidly to steroid therapy. Uveal hypersensitivity to PPD skin testing has been described in the presence of ocular or systemic tuberculosis, Eales' disease, and the Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (VKH). Our case, however, suggests that profound uveitis may be precipitated by routine

Dialyzable tuberculins: their abilities to participate in or inhibit immune reactions.

Dialyzable components of culture filtrate of Mycobacterium bovis were fractionated by gel filtration on Sephadex G-10 into eight fractions, A through H in order of their elution from the column. None of the fractions produced a visible precipitate when reacted with a hyperimmune antiserum. The first five fractions were further investigated. All were capable of inhibiting precipitation of nondialyzable tuberculin. Fraction E, containing the smallest fragments, totally abolished precipitation and fraction A, which contained the largest molecules inhibited the least. Fractions A and B were the on…

Tuberculin conversions in Indochinese refugees. An assessment of boosting and anergy.

Indochinese refugees entering the United States have a high rate of tuberculosis and tuberculin reactivity. In addition, several investigators have noted that a large number of refugees with initial tuberculin tests that are "not significant" change to "significant" reactions when retested within 8 wk. This "conversion" phenomenon has been reported in 21 to 43% of refugees and has been unexplained by antigen, testing, demographic, or exposure risk factors. A prospective evaluation of 218 refugees, conducted to assess the role of anergy and boosting, confirmed earlier findings, with 52% of 118 …

Basophils in tuberculin and "Jones-Mote" delayed reactions of humans.

Jones-Mote reactions are delayed, erythematous, and mildly indurated cutaneous reactions originally described in humans sensitized by skin injection of heterologous proteins. Similar reactions in guinea pigs contain many basophils and are called cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity. In contrast, guinea pigs immunized with mycobacterial adjuvants have classical tuberculin-type delayed hypersensitivity reactions, which contain few basophils. This has led to a new classification of delayed responses, based largely on the presence or absence of basophils. We induced sensitization for Jones-Mote rea…
