Tuberculosis (TB), caused by infection with members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis-complex, is one of the oldest known infectious disease entities, resulting in the death of millions of humans each year. It also results in a substantial degree of morbidity and mortality in animal species. Extrapulmonary TB is well recognized in humans, and the eye is one site that can be affected. Studies seeking to understand ocular TB have often relied on animal models; however, these have their limitations and may not truly reflect what happens in humans. We wish to raise awareness among ophthalmologists

INTRODUCTION: Ocular tuberculosis (OTB) is a rare form of tuberculosis. Diagnosis is usually presumptive based on epidemiology, clinical findings and positivity of immune response. The aim of the study was to characterize the OTB cases identified in Lisbon.
METHODS: Retrospective study on OTB cases diagnosed in Lisbon from 2012 to 2015. The authors gathered data regarding demographic characteristics, diagnostic criteria, type of treatment as well as therapeutic results.
RESULTS: There were 39 reported cases of presumed OTB which accounted for 12.2% of all reported TB cases. Patients had a me

PURPOSE: To compare clinical findings in patients with ocular tuberculosis experienced during two different decades.
METHODS: Thirty-four patients with ocular tuberculosis were divided into two groups: a 1990s group (n = 18) and a 2000s group (n = 16), according to the dates of their first outpatient visit. The clinical profiles of the two groups were then compared.
RESULTS: More cases of the 1990s group had complications involving extraocular tuberculosis than those of the 2000s group. While various ophthalmic manifestations were observed clinically in the 1990s group, all retinal periphleb

Tuberculosis is a ubiquitous disease and a public health problem of major importance in almost all developing and underdeveloped countries. It can involve any part of the body, including the eye. We report a case of a young child presenting with a painful blind eye with leucocoria, where a misdiagnosis of retinoblastoma was made clinically. The eye was enucleated, and subsequent pathological examination led to a final diagnosis of ocular tuberculosis. The patient was put on anti-tubercular treatment, and responded well.

Ocular tuberculosis has traditionally been considered uncommon or anecdotal. Imprecise and variable diagnostic criteria have contributed to the confusion surrounding this topic. The increase in extrapulmonary manifestations of tuberculosis during the AIDS era established the need for a prospective study of ocular involvement in patients with all types of tuberculosis using well-defined criteria. During a 15-month period, 300 cases had culture-proven tuberculosis at our institution. We randomly selected 100 for systematic ophthalmologic evaluation. Our criteria for ocular tuberculosis were divi

A prospective double blind study was carried out to evaluate the role of soluble antigen fluorescent antibody (SAFA) test to detect ocular Tuberculosis. The study material comprised 39 patients with suspected ocular tuberculosis suffering from interstitial keratitis, sclero keratitis, granulomatous uveitis, phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis, Eales disease and central serous retinopathy. The cases of proven ocular tuberculosis showed up as 70 percent strong reactors and 30 percent weak reactors to SAFA while none had a negative response to SAFA. Of these cases skin hypersensitivity reaction was
