Male and female pathological gamblers: bet in a different way and show different mental disorders.

Although in the last years several studies comparing male and female pathological gamblers have been published, most of them have been carried out using only samples of males. The aim of this study was to investigate gender differences in a sample of subjects diagnosed with pathological gambling (PG) attending three specialized outpatient units. Retrospective study was carried out of 96 patients (49% female and 51% male), comparing the main socio-demographic, clinical, and behavioral data. Most subjects (94%) met the criteria for pathological gambling. No significant differences between sexes

Sex-specific impact of vitamin D and B9 concentrations on neuroticism: a polygenic score-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroticism is a personality domain with prognostic value for physical and mental health. To properly inform public health policy, it is crucial to uncover the mechanisms underlying high neuroticism. Many internal and external factors that affect brain development and functioning and therefore might contribute to the variability of neuroticism remain understudied. Among them, the impact of vitamin sufficiency is of great interest, as it is a modifiable factor. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of neuroticism with vitamin D (VD) and vitamin B9 (VB9) using polygenic sco

Globally Estimated UVB Exposure Times Required to Maintain Sufficiency in Vitamin D Levels.

A paucity of vitamin D is a common deficiency globally, with implications for many aspects of health besides the well-known impact on musculoskeletal health. The two sources of vitamin D are through oral intake, or through endogenous synthesis in the skin when exposed to ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. Assessing nutritional needs, whether by food, food fortification or supplementation, is aided by an understanding of local potential for cutaneous synthesis of the vitamin, dependent on latitude and climate, personal skin type and local culture. To aid these discussions we provide indicative

[Psychosomatic concept of hyperthyroidism-Graves type--behavioral and biochemical characteristics].

INTRODUCTION: In this study we test the hypothesis that specific behavioral and biochemical vulnerabilities characterize individuals with hyperthyroidism-Graves type, one of the classically cited "psychosomatic disorders". MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample included 24 subjects with Graves disease and 34 controls. All participants were evaluated for personality and temperament characteristics and for platelet MAO activity. A smaller group of panic disorder patients was tested with the same set of measures to ensure a validity of the study, especially regarding results on personality tests. RES

Clinical Impact of Psychopathy on Bipolar Disorder.

Background and Objectives. Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with a significant burden due to affective symptoms and behavioral manifestations, but also cognitive and functional impairment. Comorbidity with other psychiatric conditions, including personality disorders, is frequent. The comorbidity with psychopathy deserves special consideration given that both disorders share some clinical characteristics, such as grandiosity, risky behavior or poor insight, among others, that can worsen the outcome of BD. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of psychopathy in a sample of c

Distinguishing four types of Person × Situation interactions: An integrative framework and empirical examination.

People differ in their reaction to situations, resulting in Person × Situation interactions. These interactions have been emphasized by many theoretical accounts of personality. Nevertheless, empirical progress on Person × Situation interactions has been slow. This is in part attributable to an insufficient distinction of person and situation variables and of different types of interaction effects. We propose a framework distinguishing four nested types of interaction effects varying in specificity: (a) P × S: broad Person × Situation interaction variance, (b) P × Sspec: between-person differe

Sex- and Gender-Stratified Risks of Psychological Factors for Incident Ischemic Heart Disease: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background Psychological factors are associated with an increased risk of developing ischemic heart disease ( IHD ). Women more often report psychological factors, and sex and gender differences are present in IHD . In this meta-analysis we examine the risks of psychological factors for IHD incidence in women and men. We hypothesize that a broad range of psychological factors are related to a higher risk for incident IHD , with a higher risk for women. Methods and Results PubMed, EMBASE , and Psyc INFO were searched for studies assessing the risk between psychological factors and incident IHD

Personality traits in chronic daily headache patients with and without psychiatric comorbidity: an observational study in a tertiary care headache center.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that patients with Chronic Daily Headache (CDH) have higher levels of anxiety and depressive disorders than patients with episodic migraine or tension-type headache. However, no study has considered the presence of psychiatric comorbidity in the analysis of personality traits. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity and specific personality traits in CDH patients, exploring if specific personality traits are associated to headache itself or to the psychiatric comorbidity associated with headache. METHODS: An observ

Statistical power and parameter stability when subjects are few and tests are many: comment on Peterson, Smith, Martorana, and Owens (2003).

Comments on the original article "The impact of chief executive officer personality on top management team dynamics: One mechanism by which leadership affects organizational performance", by R. S. Peterson et al.. This comment illustrates how small sample sizes, when combined with many statistical tests, can generate unstable parameter estimates and invalid inferences. Although statistical power for 1 test in a small-sample context is too low, the experimentwise power is often high when many tests are conducted, thus leading to Type I errors that will not replicate when retested. Emergence of a novel and highly divergent HTLV-3 in a primate hunter in Cameroon.

The recent discovery of human T-lymphotropic virus type 3 (HTLV-3) in Cameroon highlights the importance of expanded surveillance to better understand the prevalence and public health impact of this new retrovirus. HTLV diversity was investigated in 408 persons in rural Cameroon who reported simian exposures. Plasma from 29 persons (7.2%) had reactive serology. HTLV tax sequences were detected in 3 persons. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed HTLV-1 infection in two individuals and HTLV-3 infection in a third person (Cam2013AB). The complete proviral genome from Cam2013AB shared 98% identity and c

Assessing the impact of combat trauma on the severity, expression, and course of posttraumatic stress disorder in justice-involved veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with criminal justice involvement in veterans, but it is unclear how trauma type influences this relationship. The present study examines the impact of combat trauma on the severity and course of PTSD and the relationship with criminogenic needs in justice-involved veterans. METHOD: We conducted secondary analysis of data from 287 veterans with a criminal history admitted to mental health residential treatment. Participants completed interviews to assess PTSD symptom severity, criminal history, and criminogenic needs at the start o

Influenza in Children.

In children, influenza is one among the commonest causes of acute respiratory illness and loss of school days. Influenza A, B, and C are 3 types of viruses responsible for illness. Type A virus has many subtypes based on antigens but Type B and Type C viruses have no known subtypes. Currently, influenza A/H1N1, A/H3N2, and influenza type B viruses are circulating in humans. Transmission of influenza occurs through droplets from infected person or through direct contact with person or fomites. Clinically, influenza is characterized by acute onset fever, chills, running nose, cough, sore throat,

High dose vitamin D supplementation does not affect biochemical bone markers in multiple sclerosis - a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with multiple sclerosis have high risk of osteoporosis and fractures. A poor vitamin D status is a risk factor for MS, and vitamin D supplementation has been recommended both to prevent MS progression and to maintain bone health. METHODS: We assessed the effect of 20,000 IU vitamin D3 weekly compared to placebo on biochemical markers of bone metabolism in 68 persons with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. RESULTS: Serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D more than doubled in the vitamin D group, and parathyroid hormone decreased in the vitamin D group compared to the place

[Clinico-pathological investigation of two patients with dementia with motor neuron disease].

Dementia with motor neuron disease (D-MND) is characterized clinically by frontal and neurological signs, and pathologically by localized atrophy of the fronto-temporal lobes and neuronal ubiquitin(Ub)-positive inclusions. In this study, we compared the clinico-pathological findings of two patients with D-MND. Case 1 (55-year-old male): At the age of 51, he developed personality change and disinhibition, lacking neurological signs. Brain MRI exhibited localized atrophy of the frontal lobes. At the age of 54, he showed dysphagia and died after a disease duration of 4 years. Neuropathologically,
