Avulsion fracture of the sublime tubercle of the ulna: a newly recognized injury in the throwing athlete.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to describe the imaging features in three cases of avulsion injury of the sublime tubercle of the ulna that occurred in throwing athletes. CONCLUSION: Avulsion fracture of the sublime tubercle of the ulna is a potential cause of chronic medial elbow pain in the throwing athlete. This entity is best evaluated with a combination of plain radiographs and coronal MR images, particularly gradient-echo images that show the continuity of the avulsed fragment with the ulnar collateral ligament.

Late extensor pollicis longus rupture following displaced distal radius and ulna fractures in a child.

A 12-year-old boy experienced rupture of the extensor pollicis longus 1 month after closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of a markedly volarly displaced fracture of the distal radius and ulna. Late extensor pollicis longus rupture is a rare complication in children, especially following a markedly displaced fracture.

Surgical Management of Radial Head and Proximal Ulna Fractures Without Elbow Dislocation: A Case Report.

Fractures involving the proximal ulna and radial head are common injuries that occur in the upper extremity, often resulting from traumatic incidents such as falls or direct impact. The proximal ulna forms the elbow joint with the humerus, while the radial head articulates with both the humerus and the ulna, facilitating forearm rotation. Fractures in these areas can disrupt the stability and function of the elbow joint, leading to pain, swelling, and limited range of motion. Clinically, it is more common to observe a radial head dislocation with a proximal ulna fracture. This fracture is refe

Plating of Proximal Ulna Fractures Using Posterolateral Distal Humerus Plates: Surgical Technique and Case Series.

Precontoured olecranon plates are frequently used in the management of proximal ulna fractures. Occasionally, in comminuted proximal ulna fractures or segmental ulna fractures, available precontoured olecranon plates are too short for the management of these fractures. The authors have utilized posterolateral distal humerus plates in these instances. The coronal bend in some posterolateral distal humerus plates anecdotally fits well to the proximal ulna, despite being designed for the distal humerus. We sought to measure the coronal angulation of precontoured posterolateral distal humerus plat…

Long-term follow-up of combined fractures of the proximal radius and ulna during childhood.

Forty-five children with combined fractures of the proximal end of the radius and ulna were treated in our orthopedic department over a period of 16 years (1984-1999). The age of the patients ranged from 5 to 12 years (mean 8 years) with a peak of 7-8 years. The mechanism of injury was a fall on the outstretched hand with the elbow extended and with a valgus force being applied to the elbow. In 35 patients, closed reduction or immobilization in plaster, or both, were performed. In the other 10 patients, a surgical treatment was followed either for fractures of the radius (4) or for both the ra

[Fracture of the distal radius associated with an articular comminutive fracture of the distal ulna: treatment in emergency by osteosynthesis of the radius by volar locking plate for the radius and a resection of the distal end of the ulna: report of one case].

The authors present a case of a distal radius fracture associated with a comminutive fracture of the ulna head, treated by volar locking plate for the radius fracture and ulnar head resection. We obtain an early good objective and subjective functional result, whereas this type of fracture is classically associated with bad results in the series published with other treatments. This result needs to be confirmed by a more exhaustive series.

Anterior Radial Head Dislocation Associated with a Bifocal Fracture of the Ulna: A Bado Type ID Monteggia Fracture-Dislocation?

Monteggia fractures represent complex injuries requiring careful assessment and surgical intervention. This case report presents a rare variation of a Bado type I Monteggia fracture-dislocation that resembles features from the Jupiter subclassification type IID. A 39-year-old male sustained a high-energy injury while riding an all-terrain vehicle, resulting in a proximal segmental ulnar shaft fracture with anterior radial head dislocation. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the ulna using a pre-contoured proximal ulna low-contact dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP) successfully rest

Functional and radiographic outcomes after surgical management of complex proximal ulna fractures: a retrospective case series.

BACKGROUND: Complex proximal ulna fractures (including comminuted olecranon fractures and fracture-dislocations of the elbow) pose challenging management due to concomitant injuries to key stabilizers (radial head, coronoid process, and collateral ligaments). This study evaluates functional and radiographic outcomes following surgical treatment and explores the prognostic value of associated injuries, age stratification, and a new coronoid-centric classification system. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 43 patients with complex proximal ulna fractures treated between 2019 and 2024, with a …

Excellent results and low complication rate for anatomic polyaxial locking plates in comminuted proximal ulna fractures.

BACKGROUND: Comminuted fractures of the proximal ulna remain a great challenge in orthopedic surgery. The purpose of this study was to report the outcomes of comminuted proximal ulna fractures treated with a new construct type-anatomically preformed polyaxial locking compression plates. METHODS: Between 2013 and 2016, 46 patients with isolated comminuted fractures were treated with a 2.7-/3.5-mm VA-LCP Olecranon Plate (Synthes, Umkirch, Germany). Of these, 44 were available for an assessment after a mean follow-up period of 2.5 years (range, 12-50 months). We evaluated range of motion, time t…

Nonunion of the ulna after elastic stable intramedullary nailing for unstable forearm fractures: a case series.

Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) for displaced forearm fractures in children has shown good results over the last two decades. To our knowledge, nonunion as complications after ESIN fixation of displaced forearm fractures is not well reported in English literature. In our institute, and over a period of 10 years, we identified three cases of nonunion of the ulna after ESIN fixation of unstable and displaced forearm both bone fractures. Two patients had closed fractures and one patient had an open fracture. There was no deep infection in any case. All cases after revision surgery we

Resection of comminuted ulna head fragments with soft tissue reconstruction when associated with distal radius fractures.

Acute management of fractures involving the head and neck of the distal ulna associated with comminuted unstable fractures of the distal radius remains difficult and controversial. Fifteen consecutive such cases treated with combined external and internal fixation together with primary resection of comminuted distal ulna fracture fragments and reconstruction of the periosteal sleeve and triangular fibrocartilaginous complex are reviewed. At an average follow-up of 5.8 years, all patients were assessed for range of motion, strength, pain and function, and radiographic appearance. All had a rang

Nailing of proximal ulna fractures: biomechanical comparison of a new locked nail with angular stable plating.

PURPOSE: Proximal ulna fractures are common injuries and frequently treated with angular stable plating. This surgical option shows good functional results. Relevant drawbacks such as large soft tissue exposure, compromised blood supply of fracture fragments and disturbing osteosynthetic material are described. The aim of this study was to compare a new locked proximal ulna nail with angular stable plating in a biomechanical testing setup for extraarticular proximal ulna fractures. METHODS: Ten pairs of sawbones with a Jupiter type IIB proximal ulna fracture (OTA 2U1A3.1) were tested after os…

Distal radius fractures and distal ulna fractures among adults in a southern China county during the 11-year-period 2010 to 2020.

Most distal radius fractures are associated with distal ulnar fractures. However, there is still a lack of consensus on the incidence of different types of distal ulnar fractures among adults in China. Therefore, we analyzed the incidence of distal radial fractures with and without associated distal ulnar fractures among adults in a southern China county from 2010 to 2020. Registry data of 2333 patients (2351 sides) with a distal radius fracture from 2010 to 2020 underwent evaluation, encompassing parameters such as age, sex, distal radius fracture classification, fracture side, and distal uln
