Vascular heparan sulfate proteoglycan (vHSPG) is an important functional component of the microvasculature. In the salivary glands of young rats in different experimental conditions, we have found glycoconjugates containing hexosamines, hexoses, fucose and sialic acid in lower percentages than those found in adult rats. In the submandibular gland, the presence of sialic acid can be demonstrated only after the second week, whereas in the sublingual gland sialic acid is present in an amount roughly equal to half of what has been found in adult animals. The appearance of sialic acid in the submandibular gland is due to the development of the animals and not, as we had initially surmised to their diet.

Articular cartilage repair was followed for one year in skeletally mature dogs after destabilisation by anterior cruciate ligament transection of the stifle joint (CT), abrasion of the inferior medial condyle (ABR) to bleeding bone, or anterior cruciate transection followed by chondral abrasion (CT/ABR). Veronicastrum axillare polysaccharides (VAP) were isolated by cellulase-assisted digestion. Proteoglycan molecules in keratoconus corneas were studied by immunohistochemical and electron microscopic histochemical methods. Compared with normal human control subjects, the staining intensity with monoclonal antibody 9-A-2 was enhanced in the stroma of scarred keratoconus corneas, whereas the intensity with antibody J-19 was reduced. Four polysaccharides (GTPS, OTPS, BTPS and DTPS) were extracted from green tea, oolong tea, black tea and dark tea respectively. The physical and chemical properties, antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities were studied.
