Inferior Vena Cava obstruction as a major cause of hepatic venous outflow block is not so common. A prospective study of 20 cases gave us an opportunity to device a management protocol for this disorder. Out of 20 cases we had studied, 12 had only inferior Vena Cava obstruction while rest of the 8 cases had both hepatic vein and IVC blockade. MRI was performed in 54 patients with abnormalities of the inferior vena cava (IVC). These included 16 patients with extrinsic IVC compression, 32 patients with intrinsic IVC abnormalities, and 6 patients with IVC dilatation. All patients had spin-echo imaging, and 21 had MR angiography. While presaturated spin-echo images showed intrinsic lesions to advantage, collateral vessels were best appreciated with MR angiography. The IVC is well evaluated with MRI techniques.

A complete left cranial vena cava (LCVC) was found in a normal horse. The LCVC was well developed, but there was a complete absence of the right cranial vena cava. The azygous vein was normally distributed on the right side of the thoracic vertebral bodies but passed ventral to the aortic arch to empty into the cranial vena cava on the left close to the origin of the aortic arch. The LCVC passed over the dorsal aspect of the left atrium to reach the coronary sulcus on the caudal aspect of the heart. The LCVC opened into the right atrium via a 5 cm diameter orifice (orifice of coronary sinus).
