Pontine tegmental cap dysplasia (PTCD) is recently recognized as a rare congenital brain stem malformation with typical neuroimaging hallmarks of ventral pontine hypoplasia and vaulted pontine tegmentum projecting into the fourth ventricle. PTCD patients also demonstrate variable cranial neuropathy with predilection for involvement of the vestibulocochlear and facial nerves. We present a case of PTCD diagnosed on MRI in the neonatal period. During early infancy, the patient displayed features of multiple cranial neuropathies and bilateral hearing loss. At the age of 2, the patient underwent fu

INTRODUCTION: A narrow duplicated internal auditory canal (IAC) is an extremely rare anomaly, likely associated with congenital sensorineural hearing loss due to aplasia/hypoplasia of the vestibulocochlear nerve or the cochlear branch alone. We aimed to review our experience with IAC duplication, describe its clinical characteristics, and present a literature review.
CASE PRESENTATION: Our Otology database was searched for children who showed duplication of the IAC. Clinical characteristics of two children with bilateral duplication of the IAC are described. Data regarding clinical history, a…

Cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumours account for 6-10% of intracranial tumours. The most common CPA tumours are vestibular schwannomas (VS), also known as acoustic neuromas, benign tumours of the vestibulocochlear nerve. Less common but symptomatic skull base lesions are glomus jugulare tumours (GJT), of which approximately 40% are identified as CPA tumours. Initial symptoms for GJT may include hearing loss and tinnitus and progress to various cranial nerve dysfunctions. Three well-accepted treatment modalities for such tumours include surgical resection, radiotherapy and/or conservative manag…

The variability of the anatomic relationship of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) to the facial (seventh) and vestibulocochlear (eighth) nerves was studied in 52 cerebellopontine angles (CPAs) from 26 adult cadavers. The AICA originated from the basilar artery (98.1%) or from the vertebral artery (1.9%) as a single (92.3% of CPAs) or duplicate (7.7%) artery. Each of the 52 CPAs had one or more arterial trunks that coursed in close proximity to the seventh and eighth cranial nerves and thus were said to be nerve-related. The nerve-related arterial trunks were divided into three seg

BACKGROUND: Cranial neuropathies are a spectrum of disorders associated with dysfunction of one or more of the twelve cranial nerves and the … ve, optic nerve, oculomotor nerve, trochlear nerve, trigeminal nerve, abducens nerve, facial nerve, vestibulocochlear nerve, glossopharyngeal nerve, vagus nerve, accessory nerve, and hypoglossal nerve.
CONCLUSION: Radiographic imaging can assist in the detailed evaluation of end-organ involvement, often revealing a corresponding cranial nerve injury with high sensitivit …

OBJECTIVE: To characterize craniofacial, temporal-bone, vertebral, and systemic anomalies in oculo-auriculo-vertebral (OAV) spectrum using high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) and to examine associations with clinical severity by the Tasse Objective Scoring System.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective study (2015-2024) at a national tertiary center including 223 clinically diagnosed OAV patients; 217 had bilateral temporal-bone HRCT suitable for analysis. HRCT assessed external auditory canal (EAC), ossicular, and intratemporal facial-nerve anatomy; inner-ear/vestibulocochlear-nerve ab

OBJECTIVE: This paper reviews the current literature on involvement of the vestibular division of the eighth cranial nerve in peripheral neuropathies. The literature abounds with references to auditory neuropathy, which is frequently related to more generalized neuropathies, but there is a marked paucity of work regarding vestibular neuropathy. A brief overview of neuropathies and the anatomy of the vestibulocochlear nerve provide the background for a review of the literature of vestibular nerve involvement in a range of neuropathies.
DESIGN: A literature search including textbooks, and peer-…

We evaluated whether, compared with conventional deep learning reconstruction (DLR) and zero-filling interpolation (ZIP), super-resolution D … R-DLR, DLR, and ZIP. Three readers independently evaluated tumor depiction, depiction of facial and vestibulocochlear nerves, sharpness, noise, artifacts, and diagnostic acceptability. Quantitative indicators included edge rise distance (ERD) and edge rise slope (ERS) measured along a linear region of interest (ROI) drawn perpendicularly across the tumor-cistern cerebros …
