Trends in vibrational spectroscopy on optical waveguides.

Vibrational spectroscopy, due to its inherent specificity in providing a spectral "fingerprint" of molecular composition, is an important tool to identify and quantify molecules in environmental, clinical, biotechnological, security, and manufacturing process applications, for example. Optical waveguide chips, offering mass production, robustness, sensitivity and the potential for widespread, low-cost deployment as sensors, are being exploited in two principal forms of vibrational spectroscopy, waveguide mid-infrared spectroscopy (WMIRS) and waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (WERS). For bo…

Abdominal sensing of substrate vibrations in insects.

Mechanosensation is a universal sensory modality and respective receptors in insects are located in all body parts. For perception of substrate vibrations, highly specialized sensory organs have evolved. In insects, the legs contain specialized vibration sensors, but insects also touch the substrate with other body parts, like their abdomen. Here, we used extracellular recordings from abdominal nerves to test for vibrational sensitivity in two evolutionarily distant insect species. Vibrational stimuli of defined frequencies (30 Hz - 10 kHz) and accelerations (0.01 - 10 m/s2) were applied to th…

Enhanced collective vibrations in granular materials.

Granular materials are defined as collections of macroscopic dissipative particles. Although these systems are ubiquitous in our lives, the nature and the causes of their non-trivial collective dynamics still remain elusive and have attracted significant interest in non-equilibrium physics. Here, we focus on the vibrational dynamics of granular materials. While the vibrational dynamics of random packings have been examined concerning the jamming transition, previous research has overlooked the role of contact dissipations. We conducted numerical and analytical investigations into the vibration…

Variational Vibrational States of Methanol (12D).

Full-dimensional (12D) vibrational states of the methanol molecule (CH3OH) have been computed using the GENIUSH-Smolyak approach and the potential energy surface from Qu and Bowman (2013). All vibrational energies are converged better than 0.5 cm-1 with respect to the basis and grid size up to the first overtone of the CO stretch, ca. 2000 cm-1 beyond the zero-point vibrational energy. About 70 torsion-vibration states are reported and assigned. The computed vibrational energies agree with the available experimental data within less than a few cm-1 in most cases, which confirms the good accura…

Characterization of a novel instrument for vibration exercise.

Vibration exercise (VE) has been suggested as an effective option to improve muscle strength and power performance. Several studies link the effects of vibration training to enhanced neuromuscular stimulation and typically to involuntary reflex mechanisms. However, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear and information for the most appropriate vibration training protocols is limited. This study proposes to realize a new vibration exercise system for the biceps brachii. Amplitude, frequency, and baseline of the vibrating load, which is generated by an electromechanical actuator, can be adj…

[Vibrational physical exercises as the rehabilitation in gerontology].

Vibration biomechanical stimulation as the physiological basis of vibration physical exercises (whole body vibration) causes reflecting muscle contractions like tonic vibration reflex. This type of intervention leads to high intensive stimulation of proprioceptors as called muscle spindles which result in alteration in parameters of activity and developments of human physiological functions. This type of training has broad positive influence on organism. Acceleration physical exercises improve muscle performance, flexibility, nervous function, significantly increase bone mineral density, physi…

An immunoserological study of patients with vibration syndrome.

In a study undertaken to investigate the relationship between vibration syndrome and collagen disease, 90 Japanese patients with vibration syndrome (all men aged 41-86 years) were examined immunologic abnormalities, mainly by a set of immunoserology tests. Of these 90 patients, 25 had examinations at yearly intervals for 3 consecutive years, while the other 65 underwent examinations once. The results indicate that, of all the patients studied, 10 (11.1%) gave a positive RA test, 6 (6.7%) had leukopenia, 5 (5.6%) had hypergammaglobulinemia, and 15 (16.7%) had hypocomplementemia (CH50). Worthy o…

Circulatory disturbances of the foot in vibration syndrome.

Circulatory disturbances of the foot in patients with vibration syndrome were studied by measuring the skin temperature of both index fingers and great toes through a 3-min immersion of the right foot in cold water at 10 degrees C. Subjects included 11 patients with vibration-induced white finger (VWF) [VWF(+) group], 12 patients without VWF [VWF(-) group], and 20 healthy referents not exposed to vibration. Patients were all male chain saw operators who had scarcely been exposed to vibration of the foot. The prevalence of coldness felt in the upper and lower extremities was greater than 90% in…

Modelling human tibia structural vibrations.

Mode shapes and natural frequencies of human long bones play an important role in the interpretation, prediction and control of their dynamic response to external mechanical loads. This paper describes an experimental and theoretical study of free vibrations in an excised human tibia. Experimentally, seven tibial natural frequencies in the range 0-3 kHz were identified through measured structural transfer functions. Theoretically, a beam type Finite Element model of a human tibia is suggested. Unknown parameters in this model are determined by a Bayesian parameter estimation approach, by which…

Transient vibrations caused by heel strike.

Transient vibrations caused by heel strike and travelling vertically through the body have been monitored using accelerometers taped to the skin. A correction for skin movement based on the transmissibility function is described. The average velocity between the foot and the head for the heel-strike transient is 220 m/s. This velocity is greatest in the legs, 610 m/s, and least in the spine, 90 m/s. Shock absorption occurs mainly in the legs and to a lesser degree in the spine.

An effect of weightlessness following exposure to vibration.

Vibration of germinating wheat seedlings at the levels experienced during the launch of the NASA Biosatellite II increases the frequency of developmental arrest in seedling organs. Severe vibrations lasted approximately 30 sec in two stages. Power spectral density was greatest at frequencies around 15-16 and 19-22 Hz on the entire vehicle. Vibration forces reaching the affected parts of individual seedlings could not be measured. One or more seedling organs may be expected to be absent in 11% of selected Earth-grown wheat plants. If subjected to simulated launch vibration between 12 and 27 hr …

Vibration disturbance compensation in in situ confocal microscopy.

In situ microscopic measurement, conducted within the natural environment of a material or device, offers precise observations directly at the sample location, mitigating potential damage or deformation during transport. However, the inherent vibration of microscopic measurement equipment can introduce blurring and distortion to images, compromising measurement accuracy. This study proposes employing an acceleration sensor to detect microprobe vibrations and subsequently calculates three-dimensional coordinate displacements to compensate for measurement discrepancies. This approach can diminis…

Novel roles of vibration transmittance in fracture testing.

This letter re-assesses a publication in the Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery entitled 'Vibration transmittance measures sternotomy stability - a preliminary study in human cadavers.' The roles of ultrasound in testing for sternotomy stability and that of stress vibration transmittance in cases of fracture of the posterior table of the sternum or in hairline undisplaced fractures are examined in view of their differing sound wave frequency ranges.
