Bats are important reservoirs of zoonotic pathogens, but suitable model systems for comprehensively exploring host-pathogen interactions and assessing spillover risks remain limited. To address this gap, we developed a collection of bat organoid models spanning five species and four organ types. This multispecies, multiorgan organoid panel showed species- and tissue-specific replication patterns for several viruses, offering robust pathophysiological models for studying respiratory, renal, and enteric zoonotic viruses. Using this platform, we successfully isolated and characterized bat-borne m

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of important zoonotic agents in Brazil in urban bats and to evaluate the existence of coinfections in bats diagnosed with rabies. In 2021, organ samples from 52 bats from urban areas in southeastern Brazil were used to diagnose rabies and other zoonoses occurring in the region. The positive samples were sequenced, characterized and included in GenBank. A co-infection involving the rabies virus, Bartonella koehlerae, and Leishmania infantum was identified in a Black Myotis bat collected from a household in São Manuel, a city endemic for visc

BACKGROUND: Wild micromammals serve as key hosts for diverse zoonotic pathogens, maintaining these agents in natural ecosystems and facilitating potential spillover to humans. Assessing pathogen prevalence in micromammals is essential for evaluating zoonotic risk and informing public health interventions.
METHODS: In this study, we applied the TaqMan Array Card (TAC) platform, a high-throughput molecular diagnostic tool, to micromammal-borne zoonotic pathogen surveillance. From October to November 2022, a total of 160 wild micromammals, including Apodemus agrarius (Striped field mouse) (90.6,

The coexistence of humans and dogs, in addition to all positive effects, can result in negative effects on human health. A particular risk is posed by a population of stray dogs, that is, dogs without owners and veterinary supervision. A contact with dogs in addition to bites, carries the risk of viral, bacterial and parasitic zoonoses, and can also cause psychological trauma. Children, the elderly and pregnant women are the categories most susceptible to the negative effects of dogs. The aim of the paper was to make an interdisciplinary analysis of the negative effects of dogs on humans. Dog

Human have struggled against many infectious diseases such as cholera, plague, dysentery and yellow fever for a long time. And we have spent a lot of energy to control these infectious diseases and developed various tool for them. One of these efforts was Quarantine system that was established in 14th century in Europe. But during recent days, we are suffering from newly emerged diseases. These new infectious diseases are zoonosis and most of them are serious and highly infectious. Viral hemorrhagic fever such as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, Marburg hemorrhagic fever and Lassa fever are typical th

Human bornavirus encephalitis is a severe and often fatal infection caused by variegated squirrel bornavirus 1 (VSBV-1) and Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1). We conducted a prospective study of bornavirus etiology of encephalitis cases in Germany during 2018-2020 by using a serologic testing scheme applied along proposed graded case definitions for VSBV-1, BoDV-1, and unspecified bornavirus encephalitis. Of 103 encephalitis cases of unknown etiology, 4 bornavirus infections were detected serologically. One chronic case was caused by VSBV-1 after occupational-related contact of a person with exot

Rabies is a lethal disease caused by the neurotropic virus rabies virus (RABV), and it remains an important public health problem globally. It is known that the host immune response is important for control of viral infection and promoting viral clearance. In this context, it is well documented that, in addition to RABV neutralizing antibody, interferons and cell-mediated immunity also have an important role in preventing the establishment of disease. On the other hand, RABV suppresses host immunity through different mechanisms, for example, direct inhibition of host gene expression, sequestra

H1 and H3 influenza A viruses (IAVs) circulating in European pigs are markedly distinct from those circulating in other global swine populations. These viruses exhibit significant genetic diversity, further expanded by periodic interspecies transmission of IAVs from humans into pigs, followed by sustained circulation. Several zoonotic IAV infections in humans in Europe have been associated with the 1C lineage of H1 IAVs. Given the predominance of H1 detections in pigs and their zoonotic potential, we quantified antigenic evolution of H1 viruses in European pigs using ferret and pig models and

To date, the International Committee for Taxonomy of Viruses recognizes that the family Arenaviridae contains a unique genus Arenavirus that includes 22 viral species. There are nine additional arenaviruses that either have been discovered recently, or which taxonomic status remains pending. Arenaviruses have been classified according to their antigenic properties into two groups, the Lassa-Lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) serocomplex and the Tacaribe serocomplex which has been further divided into four evolutionary lineages. Each arenavirus is more or less tightly associated with a mammal h

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: The clade 2.3.4.4b highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus H5N1 is the etiologic agent for an ongoing panzootic with a rapidly increasing number of human infections. Although morbidity and mortality in humans with this clade seems to be limited to date, previous HPAI H5N1 viruses have been associated with mortality rates of approximately 50% in humans. Not all cases of clade 2.3.4.4b influenza A(H5N1) HPAI in humans have been associated with known exposure to infected animals. Therefore, clinicians must be aware of the changing viral ecology, human risk factors, and cl

Rift Valley fever phlebovirus (RVFV) infects humans and a wide range of ungulates and historically has caused devastating epidemics in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Lesions of naturally infected cases of Rift Valley fever (RVF) have only been described in detail in sheep with a few reports concerning cattle and humans. The most frequently observed lesion in both ruminants and humans is randomly distributed necrosis, particularly in the liver. Lesions supportive of vascular endothelial injury are also present and include mild hydropericardium, hydrothorax and ascites; marked pulmonary conge

UNLABELLED: Rodent-borne viruses, including orthohantaviruses, mammarenaviruses, and rat hepatitis virus (HEV-C), pose significant health threats to humans, causing severe diseases such as hemorrhagic fevers, respiratory illness, and hepatitis. In Cambodia, data on these viruses remain limited, and their burdens on human health are unknown. This study investigated the presence of these viruses in rodents and assessed potential human exposure across diverse environmental and socio-economic contexts in Cambodia. The study was conducted in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas of Cambodia during the

Zoonotic diseases are transmitted from animals to humans, and they impose a significant global burden by impacting both animal and human health. It can lead to substantial economic losses and cause millions of human deaths. The emergence and re-emergence of zoonotic diseases are heavily influenced by both anthropogenic and natural drivers such as climate change, rapid urbanization, and widespread travel. Over time, the unprecedented rise of new and re-emerging zoonotic diseases has prompted the need for rapid and effective vaccine development. Following the success of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine

Influenza A virus (FLUAV) affects a wide range of hosts, including humans and animals, posing a threat to public health. In swine, H3N2 subtype is associated with human-to-swine spillovers of seasonal viruses. In Latin America, the molecular and antigenic characteristics of swine FLUAV H3N2, as well as its phylogenetic origin, are poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the first swine H3N2 detected in Colombia. The origin and lineage of the virus were estimated through phylogenetic and molecular clock analyses. Antigenic characterization was achieved by c

Zoonotic diseases have become a significant public health concern due to their capacity to cross species barriers and cause widespread outbreaks. Conventional diagnostic and therapeutic strategies often lack the specificity, sensitivity, and rapid adaptability required for effective disease management. Therefore, aptamers, single-stranded oligonucleotides, have emerged as powerful tools in detection and therapeutics. This review elucidates the role of aptamer-based technologies in diagnosing and treating bacterial, viral, and parasitic zoonoses, including Leptospira, Helicobacter pylori, rabie
