Gait kinematics during walking in children with impaired binocular vision due to amblyopia or strabismus.

Impaired binocular vision early in life from amblyopia or strabismus is related to lower scores than controls for walking on standardized tests of motor ability. However, standardized tests do not assess gait kinematics, which may provide a better understanding of motor deficits. This study investigated gait kinematics while walking in children with amblyopia or strabismus. Children ages 7-13 years with amblyogenic factors (13 anisometropia, 8 strabismus) were enrolled in the amblyopia or strabismus (AS) group (15/21 had current amblyopia). An age-similar group of 33 controls with normal visio

Comparative Study of Accommodative Function and Binocular Vision in Patients With Primary Angle-Closure Disease.

The age-related decline in accommodative function after the age of 50 years corresponds with an increasing incidence of primary angle-closure disease (PACD); however, the interaction between this decline and PACD remains unexamined. Additionally, refractive error-accommodation associations in elderly individuals, which are critical for PACD pathophysiology, remain unclear, despite a prior pediatric focus. This study evaluated visual functions (including binocular vision, vergence function, and accommodation function) in patients diagnosed with PACD. A total of 51 patients (102 eyes) were inclu

Comparison of symmetrical prism adaptation to asymmetrical prism adaptation in those with normal binocular vision.

This study sought to determine whether symmetrical compared to asymmetrical horizontal prisms (base-out or base-in) evoked different rates of phoria adaptation. Sixteen young adults with normal binocular vision participated in a symmetrical phoria adaptation experiment using a 3Δ base-out or 3Δ base-in binocular prism flipper and an asymmetrical phoria adaptation experiment using a 6Δ base-out or 6Δ base-in monocular wedge prism. The experiments were randomized and counterbalanced to reduce the influence of the prism stimulation order. Asymmetrical base-out prism adaptation was significantly f

Intrastromal corneal tattooing as treatment in a case of intractable strabismic diplopia (double binocular vision).

We present the case of a 29 man complaining of intractable diplopia during the last 5 years. He had undergone several surgical procedures for the treatment of his infantile strabismus since age 6 years. After surgery, the patient had been treated on 4 occasions with Botox. He also performed antisuppression exercises to encourage binocular vision. On our examination, the patient showed a 20/20 visual acuity in both eyes and a strabismic dysfunction with slight alphabet pattern, which induced a disturbing constant diplopia. Several treatment options were considered as occlusion therapy or cosmet

Scalp distribution of the attenuated EEG rhythmic activities for dissimilar and/or moving images in binocular vision.

Spontaneous EEGs, at 16 electrode positions over the entire head in five healthy subjects, were measured and analyzed while the subjects gazed at a variety of images in binocular vision. A significant difference in the EEG alpha rhythm (8-13 Hz) was observed between the two states of gazing at stationary and moving gratings in binocular fusion (BF). The variation was large at the parietal and right posterior temporal regions. We also confirmed a significant difference of the alpha rhythm between binocular rivalry (BR) and BF, which was reported in our previous paper, using different images. A

Non-fusable stimuli and the role of binocular inhibition in normal and pathologic vision, especially strabismus.

Stimuli on corresponding points of both retinae that cannot be fused may cause binocular rivalry: the stimuli suppress each other alternately. This effect was used to study the influence of image sharpness upon binocular inhibition. Blurring an image means decreasing its contrast and attenuating its high spatial frequencies. Both factors diminish the time that a stimulus is perceived during rivalry. This fact has implications both for normal vision--as objects off the horopter are normally blurred--and for disturbed vision when the image of one or both eyes is (locally) deteriorated. In both c

Correlation between binocular vision function and visual fatigue in school-age children with myopic anisometropia.

We investigated the differences in binocular vision function and visual fatigue between school-aged children with myopic anisometropia and those with myopic isometropia. It also examined the correlation between myopic anisometropia and binocular vision parameters. One hundred school-aged (ages 6-13 years) children (43 boys and 57 girls) were divided into two groups: the myopic anisometropia group (interocular spherical equivalent difference ≥ 1.50 and < 4.00 D) and the myopic isometropia group as control group (interocular spherical equivalent difference < 1.00 D). Binocular vision parameters

[Fixation disparity in peripheral and central binocular vision under conditions of prismatic heterophoria (author's transl)].

A critical review of the literature shows that there are controversal interpretations of thephenomenon fixation disparity. The former findings of Ogle and coworkers are ascertained byinvertigator to close the central gap in the fusional patter. Formerly the gap was essentialdue to polarisation techiques. 1. Without central gap fixation disparity decreases, but remainssignificantly different from zero. 2. Diminution or closing of the gap leads to more preciseresults, since the position of the eyes is better controlled. 3. Straining the binocular vision with high prism power cortical tolerances

Innovative Binocular Vision Testing for Phoria and Vergence Ranges Using Automatic Dual Rotational Risley Prisms.

This study evaluated binocular visual function using automatic dual rotational Risley prisms (ADRRPs) to measure phoria and vergence ranges. Thirty-nine (mean age: 21.82 ± 1.10 years; age range: 20-24 years) healthy adults with normal binocular vision participated. Each underwent baseline refraction exams followed by phoria and vergence tests conducted using both a phoropter with Maddox rods and the ADRRPs. The results revealed a strong positive correlation between the two instruments for distance phoria (r = 0.959, p < 0.001) and near-phoria measurements (r = 0.968, p < 0.001). For vergence t

Binocular vision interference from unequal inputs in an adult patient with monocular dense acquired cataract.

INTRODUCTION: The effect of the unequal visual inputs in uniocular cataracts is addressed through the hypothesis that a marked inequality of the visual inputs will have an interference effect that will degrade the binocular vision relative to that of the better eye. We tested this hypothesis of reverse interference effect by both clinical and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging assessments in an acute unilateral cataract patient. The patient was 63 year old woman who rapidly developed a dense sub-capsular cataract following steroid radio-chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. METHODS: Cl

Impaired vision for binocular tasks after unilateral optic nerve regeneration in the frog Litoria moorei.

Behavioural responses to objects in the binocular field were examined in frogs with one regenerate and one intact optic nerve. Data were compared to those for normal controls and for frogs with vision via one intact optic nerve. During prey acquisition, frogs with regenerated optic nerves underestimated the distance to the prey on their first strike; as a consequence, the regenerate series made several attempts to achieve a successful prey capture. By contrast, normal frogs and those using only one eye struck accurately at the prey and usually captured it on the first attempt. However, frogs u

Sensory Eye Dominance Remains Stable Across Binocular Combination and Rivalry in Normal and Anisometropic Amblyopic Vision.

PURPOSE: When dichoptically presented with sinewave gratings of equal but opposite orientations, observers' binocular perception transitions from combination to rivalry as interocular orientation difference increases. This study aimed to investigate whether sensory eye dominance (SED) is modulated by interocular orientation differences in amblyopic and healthy adults. METHODS: Eight adults with amblyopia (26.25 ± 3.96 years, 5 women) and 10 adults with normal vision (25.00 ± 1.56 years, 5 women) participated. Dichoptic sinewave gratings were presented with six interocular orientation differen
