Vitamin and mineral supplements to athletes: do they help?

Although the general implications of this review would be that vitamin and mineral supplements are ineffective as ergogenic aids when added to the diet of an athlete who is well-nourished, there may be certain instances in which supplementation is warranted. For example, wrestlers on low calorie diets and high levels of energy expenditure may not be receiving a balanced intake of nutrients. Young male athletes and female athletes of all ages should be aware of iron-rich foods and include them in the daily diet. The female athlete who experiences a heavy menstrual flow may consider commercial i

The Dynamic Coenzyme Network of B Vitamins in Nutritional Neuropathy and Neuropsychiatric Vulnerability: A Mechanistic Narrative Review.

Nutritional peripheral neuropathy is a clinically important condition associated with inadequate intake, malabsorption, bariatric surgery, aging, metabolic disease, and chronic medication exposure. B vitamins serve as essential coenzymes in mitochondrial energy metabolism, one-carbon metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, redox regulation, and myelin maintenance. This narrative review synthesizes mechanistic and clinical evidence linking B vitamin-dependent coenzyme systems to nutritional neuropathy and selected neuropsychiatric manifestations. Particular emphasis is placed on the tricarboxyl

[B vitamins in geriatrics - what to determine, what to replace?].

Deficiencies in B-vitamins have recently been recognized as risk factors for stroke and dementia. With increasing age there is an increased prevalence of metabolic and nutritional changes leading to increased vulnerability of vitamin deficiency. Especially in geriatric patients, these changes can have effects on the nervous system that are often not recognized. Often, however, vitamins in particular are taken uncritically and attributed with a variety of unspecific properties. With regard to the knowledge about the water-soluble B vitamins (B6, B12, folic acid and homocysteine as well as B1), t

Neurological disorders in vitamin B12 deficiency.

The review discusses thesteps of vitamin B12 metabolism and its role in maintaining of neurological functions. The term "vitamin B12 (cobalamin)" refers to several substances (cobalamins) of a very similar structure. Cobalamin enters the body with animal products. On the peripherу cobalamin circulates only in binding with proteins transcobalamin I and II (complex cobalamin-transcobalamin II is designated as "holotranscobalamin"). Holotranscobalamin is absorbed by different cells, whereas transcobalamin I-binded vitamin B12 - only by liver and kidneys. Two forms of cobalamin were identified as

B vitamins intake and cancer risk: a structured narrative review of evidence on riboflavin, pyridoxine, cobalamin and folate.

BACKGROUND: B vitamins play key roles in one-carbon metabolism, DNA synthesis and methylation, and redox regulation. Their potential association with cancer risk remains debated due to heterogeneous findings and methodological limitations across studies. OBJECTIVE: This structured narrative review aimed to summarize and clinically contextualize the available evidence on the relationship between the intake of vitamins B2 (riboflavin), B6 (pyridoxine), B12 (cobalamin) and folate (vitamin B9) and the risk of selected cancers. METHODS: A structured literature search was performed in PubMed up to

Do the benefits of folic acid fortification outweigh the risk of masking vitamin B12 deficiency?

Adding folate to cereals can prevent neural tube defects and other health problems, say James Mills and Anne Molloy, but Edward Reynolds is concerned that prolonged excessive folate risks harm unless vitamin B12 is also supplemented

[Intranasal cyanocobalamin; an effective and safe therapeutic alternative].

Vitamin B12 or cobalamin deficiency is a common nutritional disorder, in which the early recognition and treatment is critical since it is a reversible cause of bone marrow failure and demyelinating nervous system disease. Insufficient intake of vitamin along with anatomical or functional disorders of the stomach, pancreas and terminal ileum are the most frequent causes of the deficit. We present three cases of patients with cobalamin deficiency secondary to intestinal malabsorption after bariatric surgery, in relation to autoimmune process and inflammatory bowel disease mechanisms respectivel

Clinical and neurological findings of severe vitamin B12 deficiency in infancy and importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

AIM: Nutritional vitamin B12 deficiency among children in developing countries may lead to a severe clinical status. In this article, the clinical manifestations of vitamin B12 deficiency and the consequences of delay in its diagnosis have been evaluated. METHODS: A total of 41 patients who were hospitalised and treated with the diagnosis of severe vitamin B12 deficiency in the paediatric haematology department of the hospital were enrolled in the trial. The diagnosis of severe vitamin B12 deficiency was based on haematological values, a serum vitamin B12 level of <100 pg/mL and a normal leve
