Voice-Related Quality of Life in Post-Laryngectomy Rehabilitation: Tracheoesophageal Fistula's Wellness.

(1) Introduction: Laryngeal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer affecting the upper aerodigestive tract. Despite ensuring good oncological outcome in many locoregionally advanced cases, total laryngectomy is associated with relevant physical and psychological sequelae. Treatment through tracheo-esophageal speech, if promising, can lead to very variable outcomes. Not all laryngectomee patients with vocal prosthesis benefit from the same level of rehabilitation mainly due to the development of prosthetic or fistula related problems. The relating sequelae in some cases are even more

Influence of acoustic rhinometry, rhinoresistometry and endoscopic sinus surgery on voice quality.

Twenty-one patients with documented chronic paranasal sinusitis, being in need of endoscopic endonasal sinus surgery were subjected to voice analysis. Tape recordings of sustained vowels were performed both pre- and postoperatively. All voice samples were examined with a system of sound spectrographic analysis. Patients with nasal obstruction, detected by active anterior rhinomanometry were excluded from further studies. Analysis of pre- and postoperative spectograms was focused on changes in center frequency as well as on a bandwidth of the initial four formants. The variations in specific di

Voice quality after treatment for T1a glottic carcinoma--radiotherapy versus laser cordectomy.

The purpose of this study was to assess the anatomic and functional outcomes and compare the voice quality in patients affected by T1a glottic carcinoma treated with curative intent with radiotherapy or laser cordectomy. Fifty-seven cases were analysed: 27 after curative radiotherapy and 30 after laser cordectomy. All patients were studied with videolaryngostroboscopy, voice analysis by narrow spectrogram, and vocal parameters (Jitter, Shimmer, noise/harmonic ratio, and diplophonia). Videolaryngostroboscopy showed severe glottic inadequacy in 25% of cases treated with radiation and insufficien

Glottal closure, transglottal airflow, and voice quality in healthy middle-aged women.

Seventeen healthy women, 45 to 61 years old, were examined using videofiberstroboscopy during phonation at three loudness levels. Two phoniatricians evaluated glottal closure using category and ratio scales. Transglottal airflow was studied by inverse filtering of the oral airflow signal recorded in a flow mask (Glottal Enterprises System) during the spoken phrase /ba:pa:pa:pa:p/ at three loudness levels. Subglottal pressure was estimated from the intraoral pressure during p occlusion. Running speech and the repeated /pa:/ syllables were perceptually evaluated by three speech pathologists rega

Longitudinal voice quality changes following Isshiki thyroplasty type I: the Yale experience.

Longitudinal voice quality changes following Isshiki thyroplasty type I were investigated in a group of 13 patients exhibiting unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Thyroplasty type I medializes the paralyzed fold by using a Silastic implant for external lateral compression of the abducted fold. No perioperative complications were experienced. We observed significantly higher voice fundamental frequency, significantly louder voice intensity, and significantly longer maximum phonation time, both immediately following phonosurgery and up to 3 months postoperatively. Surgical refinements of thyroplast

Quality of Voice in Patients With Partial Deafness Before and After Cochlear Implantation.

Partial deafness is a condition characterised by normal hearing thresholds in low frequencies and increased hearing thresholds (nearly deafness) for high frequencies. Typical hearing aids are rather of a very limited use in this condition as they do not improve understanding of speech. Patients with partial deafness can be presently treated with cochlear implants, which had not been used before due to the risk of damage of hearing remains by electrode introduced into cochlea. The purpose of our study was an objective and subjective assessment of voice quality in partial deafness patients befor

The effect of velopharyngeal insufficiency on voice quality in Estonian Children with Cleft Palate.

Most children born with cleft palate (CP) or cleft lip and palate (CL/P) have velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), some degree of hypernasal resonance, articulation disorders and laryngeal dysphonia. Combination of different CL/P specific problems may mask laryngeal dysphonia and therefore, it may remain undiagnosed and untreated by clinicians. The research aimed to study the effect of VPI on voice quality in Estonian CL/P children. We included 18 CL/P and 79 healthy children. Combination of objective (Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP)) and subjective (Pediatric Voice Handicap Index (pVHI)

The Voice-Related Quality Of Life: A Study on the Reliability and Validity of the Tamil Version.

OBJECTIVE: Voice serves as an identity and is one of the primary requisites of an individual, especially for singers who are extensive professional voice users with greater vulnerability to voice disorders. The aim of this study is to translate and validate the Tamil version of Voice-Related Quality of Life (T-VRQOL), a self-rating questionnaire that estimates the influence of voice disorders on quality of life. The study also intends to compare the T-VRQOL scores in singers (with and without voice complaint) and non-singers, and to correlate T-VRQOL and the Tamil Singing Voice Handicap Index-

Application of the acoustic voice quality index for objective measurement of dysphonia severity.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past several decades, many acoustic parameters have been studied as sensitive to and to measure dysphonia. However, current acoustic measures might not be sensitive measures of perceived voice quality. A meta-analysis which evaluated the relationship between perceived overall voice quality and several acoustic-phonetic correlates, identified measures that do not rely on the extraction of the fundamental period, such the measures derived from the cepstrum, and that can be used in sustained vowel as well as continuous speech samples. A specific and recently developed metho
