Detecting volatile organic compounds to locate human remains in a simulated collapsed building.

The occurrence of mass disasters has increased worldwide due to changing environments from global warming and a heightened threat of terrorism acts. When these disasters strike, it is imperative to rapidly locate and recover human victims, both the living and deceased. While search and rescue dogs are used to locate the living, cadaver detection dogs are typically tasked with locating the dead. This can prove challenging because commingling of victims is likely to occur during disasters in populated areas which will impact the decomposition process and the resulting odour produced. To date, th

Quantification of volatile organic compounds by secondary electrospray ionization-high resolution mass spectrometry.

Secondary electrospray ionization coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (SESI-HRMS) is a direct mass spectrometry technique, which can identify trace volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in real time without sample pretreatment and chromatographic separation. SESI-HRMS has been successfully applied in multiple applications, including breath analysis, animals and plants VOCs emissions, analysis of headspace of cell cultures and indoor and outdoor air. The range of areas where the technique can potentially have a substantial impact is very broad. However, one critical aspect that requires …

Broadband dielectric spectroscopic detection of volatile organic compounds with ZnO nanorod gas sensors.

Metal-oxide (MO) semiconductor gas sensors based on chemical resistivity necessarily involve making electrical contacts to the sensing materials. These contacts are imperfect and introduce errors into the measurements. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of using contactless broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS)-based metrology in gas monitoring that avoids distortions in the reported resistivity values due to probe use, and parasitic errors (i.e. tool-measurand interactions). Specifically, we show how radio frequency propagation characteristics can be applied to study discrete pro

Effects of Anthropogenic and Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds on Los Angeles Air Quality.

Assessing the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in production of ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is especially important in light of ongoing policy goals. Here, we estimated the ozone formation potential (OFP) and SOA formation potential (SOAP) of anthropogenic and biogenic VOC emissions to evaluate (1) anthropogenic VOCs and associated sectors that dominate OFP and SOAP and (2) the potential impacts of enhanced biogenic VOCs from urban greening programs on air quality in Los Angeles county. In the present-day scenario, ethylene had the largest OFP followed by m & p-xylene, t…

Novel cryptomelane nanosheets for the superior catalytic combustion of oxygenated volatile organic compounds.

This work offers a novel pathway to prepare cryptomelane manganese oxides nanosheets as an superior catalyst for the catalytic combustion of oxygenated volatile organic compounds. The tunnel cryptomelane manganese oxides nanosheets were prepared from layered birnessite via simultaneously tuning pH and molar ratio (ROK) of the redox-precipitation between oxalic acid and KMnO4. Thus, few-layered cryptomelane nanosheets possessing the most predominantly exposed (211) facet are generated at low pH (5.2-5.6), which intensifies the surface area of thin crystal cryptomelane nanosheets up to 177 m2g-1…

Biogenic volatile organic compounds from the urban forest of the Metropolitan Region, Chile.

Tropospheric ozone is a secondary pollutant whose primary sources are volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides. The national standard is exceeded on a third of summer days in some areas of the Chilean Metropolitan Region (MR). This study reports normalized springtime experimental emissions factors (EF) for biogenic volatile organic compounds from tree species corresponding to approximately 31% of urban trees in the MR. A Photochemical Ozone Creation Index (POCI) was calculated using Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential of quantified terpenes. Ten species, natives and exotics, were anal…

Plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ozone (O3) polluted atmospheres: the ecological effects.

Tropospheric ozone (O3) is an important secondary air pollutant formed as a result of photochemical reactions between primary pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). O3 concentrations in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) are predicted to continue increasing as a result of anthropogenic activity, which will impact strongly on wild and cultivated plants. O3 affects photosynthesis and induces the development of visible foliar injuries, which are the result of genetically controlled programmed cell death. It also activates many plant defense responses, in…

Selective sensing of volatile organic compounds using novel conducting polymer-metal nanoparticle hybrids.

Conducting polymer-metal nanoparticle hybrids, fabricated by assembling metal nanoparticles on top of functionalized conducting polymer film surfaces using conjugated linker molecules, enable the selective sensing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In these conducting polymer-metal nanoparticle hybrids, selectivity is achieved by assembling different metals on the same conducting polymer film. This eliminates the need to develop either different polymers chemistries or device configurations for each specific analyte. In the hybrids, chemisorption of the analyte vapor induces charge redistri…

Halogenated volatile organic compounds from the use of chlorine-bleach-containing household products.

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and many organic chemicals contained in household cleaning products may react to generate halogenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Halogenated VOC emissions from eight different chlorine bleach containing household products (pure and diluted) were investigated by headspace experiments. Chloroform and carbon tetrachloride were the leading compounds along with several halogenated compounds in the headspace of chlorine bleach products. One of the most surprising results was the presence of carbon tetrachloride (a probable human carcinogen and a powerful greenhous…

Spatial variation of volatile organic compounds in a "Hot Spot" for air pollution.

The spatial variations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were characterized in the Village of Waterfront South neighborhood (WFS), a "hot spot" for air toxics in Camden, NJ. This was accomplished by conducting "spatial saturation sampling" for 11 VOCs using 3500 OVM passive samplers at 22 sites in WFS and 16 sites in Copewood/Davis Streets (CDS) neighborhood, an urban reference area located ∼1000 m east of the WFS. Sampling durations were 24 and 48 h. For all 3 sampling campaigns (2 in summer and 1 in winter), the spatial variations and median concentrations of toluene, ethylbenzene, and xy…

Volatile organic compounds from feces and their potential for diagnosis of gastrointestinal disease.

Little is known about the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in feces and their potential health consequences. Patients and healthcare professionals have observed that feces often smell abnormal during gastrointestinal disease. The aim of this work was to define the volatiles emitted from the feces of healthy donors and patients with gastrointestinal disease. Our hypotheses were that i) VOCs would be shared in health; ii) VOCs would be constant in individuals; and iii) specific changes in VOCs would occur in disease. Volatile emissions in health were defined in a cohort and a longitudinal study…

Children's exposure to volatile organic compounds as determined by longitudinal measurements in blood.

Blood concentrations of 11 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured up to four times over 2 years in a probability sample of more than 150 children from two poor, minority neighborhoods in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Blood levels of benzene, carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethene, and m-/p-xylene were comparable with those measured in selected adults from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), whereas concentrations of ethylbenzene, tetrachloroethylene, toluene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and o-xylene were two or more times lower in the children. Blood levels of…

Workplace monitoring for volatile organic compounds using thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The interest in the identification of volatile organic compounds in the workplace has been a major focus of many National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) field studies. A primary technique for sampling and analysis of these compounds is summarized by NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods (NMAM) 2549. This is a screening method that uses a multi-bed sorbent to trap a wide variety of compounds and compound classes. Thermal desorption techniques are used as a first attempt to characterize potential contaminants in a workplace and to determine what future sampling and analyses mu…

Distribution of volatile halogenated organic compounds between rat blood serum and adipose tissue.

A 31-day rat-dosing sequence was used to study some aspects of the physiological distribution, metabolism, storage and rate of elimination of chloroform, trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride and bromodichloromethane from rat adipose tissue and blood serum. Data points were collected nine times during the dosing period and twice after dosing had ceased. Purge/trap/desorb methodology was employed using a liquid sample concentrator, a gas-liquid chromatograph and a Hall electrolytic conductivity detector in series. Compound identities were confirmed using a GC/MS analytical system. For these v

Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOCs) - rare cause of occupational asthma in two veterinarians.

Animal farming is associated with exposure to organic dust containing allergens, endotoxins, and alive microbial organisms. Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (MVOCs) produced mainly by fungi and bacteria pollute the air and accumulate particularly in confined animal buildings, posing serious health hazards to workers, including veterinarians. The exposure can lead to rhinitis, chronic bronchitis, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In a range of cross-sectional studies, wheeze and asthma were associated with exposure to swine, dairy cattle, horse, and sheep, but also t…

Advanced PEBA-based membranes for enhanced removal of volatile organic compounds from wastewater.

The removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from aqueous streams is of considerable environmental and public-health importance. In the present work, nanocomposite membranes were fabricated by incorporating CaF₂ nanocrystals into a poly(ether-b-amide) (PEBA) matrix and evaluated for the hydrophobic pervaporation (PV) of (1-methylethyl)benzene (1-MEB) from dilute aqueous solutions. Relative to Pure PEBA membrane, the introduction of CaF₂ nanocrystals produced pronounced changes in the physicochemical properties of the membranes. The water contact angle (CA) increased to a maximum of 108.77°…

Microbial volatile organic compounds in plant defense: mechanisms, signaling networks, and agricultural applications.

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) are low-molecular-weight metabolites released by bacteria and fungi in the rhizosphere and phyllosphere. mVOCs have emerged as important mediators of plant-microbes' communication and systemic defense priming. This review covers current knowledge of the biochemical diversity of the mVOCs, encompassing major classes of mVOCs, and their mechanisms of action in plant defense. We delineate the molecular signaling cascades activated by key mVOCs such as 2,3-butanediol, acetoin, dimethyl disulfide, and geosmin, highlighting their convergence on jasmonic a…

Impact of microplastics on plant biogenic volatile organic compounds emission: A preliminary study.

Plants produce biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) that are essential for interacting with the environment. As emerging pollutants, microplastics (MPs) may influence BVOCs emissions, yet their effects remain poorly underexplored. This study employed headspace solid phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography - mass spectrum to investigate the impact of MPs on the BVOC emission profiles of lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Our results demonstrated that polystyrene (PS) MPs exposure, even at environmental concentrations (0.5-2 mg/L), significantly altered BVOC profiles, with a marked i…

Porous La-Fe-O Perovskite as Catalyst for Combustion of Volatile Organic Compounds.

Porous nanocrystalline lanthanum perovskite La-Fe-O (LaFeO3) powders were synthesized by the sol-gel self-combustion method, using polyvinyl alcohol as the colloidal medium. The perovskite structure of the material, without secondary phases, was obtained at a calcination temperature of 900 °C for 40 min. The obtained powder was tested for catalytic activity at moderate temperatures (50-550 °C) for ethanol, methanol, acetone, benzene, and Pb-free gasoline vapors. Catalytic combustion begins at quite low temperatures (60-200 °C), compared to normal combustion, and this can be attributed to the n
