Anomalous optic discs in a patient with a Dandy-Walker cyst.

A 19-month-old female infant with a Dandy-Walker cyst had anomalous optic discs, each of which appeared to divide to form an accessory optic nerve. The discs probably lie within the spectrum of anomalous discs including optic nerve aplasia and hypoplasia, megallopapillae, morning glory disc, optic disc dysplasia, and optic nerve colobomas. The association of anomalous optic discs with a Dandy-Walker cyst has not been previously recognized. The ocular and brain malformations in this patient likely occurred during the fourth to eighth week of gestation, when the retinal ganglion cell axons were

Transitional forms of Arnold-Chiari and Dandy-Walker malformations.

The morphological findings in 12 cases of Arnold-Chiari and 3 cases of Dandy-Walker malformations are described and compared to those in 2 cases of congenital hydrocephalus of unknown origin, 1 case of isolated meningo-myelocele and 2 cases of normal newborn brains. Lesions common to both types of malformation indicate a same time-related embryogenetic defect of the roofplate of the rhombencephalon, that does not allow the inferior vermis and the choroid plexus to turn inward into the fourth ventricle.

The hypercalcaemic syndrome in rats bearing the Walker carcinosarcoma 256.

The strain of Walker carcinosarcoma 256 described induces hypercalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia and hyperuraemia in tumour bearing rats. Changes in calcium and phosphorus excretion are observed as well as accompanying calcification of soft tissue organs and loss of bone calcium. These changes in calcium metabolism disappear after removal of the tumour, so that long-range action of the tumour can be stated. The results are discussed in comparison with three other animal models of tumour dependent hypercalcaemia.

Taking a Load Off: User Perceptions of Smart Offloading Walkers for Diabetic Foot Ulcers Using the Technology Acceptance Model.

People with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are commonly prescribed offloading walkers, but inadequate adherence to prescribed use can be a barrier to ulcer healing. This study examined user perspectives of offloading walkers to provide insight on ways to help promote adherence. Participants were randomized to wear: (1) irremovable, (2) removable, or (3) smart removable walkers (smart boot) that provided feedback on adherence and daily walking. Participants completed a 15-item questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Spearman correlations assessed associations between TAM rati…

Buses, cars, bicycles and walkers: the influence of the type of human transport on the flight responses of waterbirds.

One way to manage disturbance to waterbirds in natural areas where humans require access is to promote the occurrence of stimuli for which birds tolerate closer approaches, and so cause fewer responses. We conducted 730 experimental approaches to 39 species of waterbird, using five stimulus types (single walker, three walkers, bicycle, car and bus) selected to mimic different human management options available for a controlled access, Ramsar-listed wetland. Across species, where differences existed (56% of 25 cases), motor vehicles always evoked shorter flight-initiation distances (FID) than h…

Comparison of upper extremity glenohumeral joint forces in children with cerebral palsy using anterior and posterior walkers - biomed 2009.

Walkers are prescribed with the notion that one type of walker will be better for a child than another. One underlying justification for this practice is the theory that one walker may produce less stress on the upper extremities as the patient uses the walker. Nevertheless, upper extremity joint loading is not typically analyzed during walker assisted gait in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy. It has been difficult to evaluate the theory of walker prescription based on upper extremity stresses because loading on the upper extremities however has not been quantified until recently.…

Effects of lunges inserted in walking (eccentric walking) on lower limb muscle strength, physical and cognitive function of regular walkers.

INTRODUCTION: Walking is a popular exercise but does not increase lower limb muscle strength and balance. We hypothesized that muscle strength, physical and cognitive function would be improved by inserting lunges in conventional walking. METHODS: Eleven regular walkers (54-88 years) who had more than 5000 steps in exercise walking a day at least 5 days a week participated in this study. They walked as usual for the first 4 weeks and included lunges and descending stairs or slope walking (i.e., eccentric walking) for the next 8 weeks. The steps of eccentric walking were gradually increased fr…

Spine to pelvis "T-Construct" using magnetic controlled growing rods in non-walkers neuromuscular early-onset scoliosis: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUNDS: Magnetic controlled growing rods (MCGRs) have been proven to be effective in controlling early onset neuromuscular scoliosis but no study has evaluated the combination with a sacro-bi-iliac construct. The aim of our study is to report surgical management of early onset non-walkers neuromuscular scoliosis correction using MCGRs associated with a sacro-bi-iliac "T-construct" and its mid-term outcomes. Our hypothesis was that this set-up provided well correction of the pelvic obliquity and that this correction was maintained over time. METHODS: A retrospective single-center study wa…

Leucine modulates the effect of Walker factor, a proteolysis-inducing factor-like protein from Walker tumours, on gene expression and cellular activity in C2C12 myotubes.

Cancer-cachexia causes severe weight loss, particularly from the wasting of skeletal muscle, which occurs due to increased protein catabolism and/or decreased protein synthesis. The muscle protein degradation observed in cancer patients is mediated by a specific cytokine, proteolysis-inducing factor (PIF), which is produced by the tumour. This protein increases the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway activity, and the synthesis of muscle protein in these patients can be affected by several factors, including nutrient-related signalling. Some nutrients, such as leucine, can decrease the ubiquitin-prot

Clinical characteristics and genetic analysis of different Dandy-Walker malformation.

BACKGROUND: Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a rare congenital malformation of the central nervous system (CNS). It is characterized by variable hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, with or without an enlarged cisterna magna. Given that large-sample genetic analysis of DWM has not been conducted to date, this study aims to provide more comprehensive genetic counseling for prenatal diagnosis by summarizing the clinical features and genetic findings of DWM. METHODS: Between January 2010 and May 2025, among 22,048 pregnant women, there were 487 cases

Dandy-Walker malformation associated with subarachnoid hemorrhage. A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Dandy-Walker malformation is a rare congenital brain defect characterized by vermian agenesia with cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and posterior fossa enlargement. The etiology is still poorly understood but is presupposed to be multifactorial, infrequently caused by intracranial hemorrhage. We describe a case of male newborn known to have Dandy-Walker malformation associated with subarachnoid bleeding after the delivery, which is a quiet rare presentation only discussed in a few literatures before. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a rare case of a full-term male baby de

Dandy-Walker Syndrome: Delayed Acute Presentation With Unusual Symptoms.

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare congenital brain malformation defined by the presence of an expanded posterior fossa, full or partial absence of the cerebellar vermis, and a cystic expansion of the fourth ventricle. We report an 18-month-old girl with DWS presenting with atypical clinical manifestations and unusual symptoms. She initially presented with persistent vomiting and abdominal pain for four days, not responding to antiemetic medication. In addition, she was found to have abnormal postural arching of the back, extension of the lower limbs, and neck extension. MRI and CT head sug

Man-machine interaction-based motion control of a robotic walker.

BACKGROUND: The aging population brings the problem of healthcare and dyskinesia. The lack of mobility extremely affects stroke patient's activities of daily living (ADL) and decreases their quality of life. To assist these mobility-limited people, a robotic walker is designed to facilitate gait rehabilitation training. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to present the implementation of a novel motion control method to assist disabled people based on their motion intention. METHODS: The kinematic framework of the robotic walker is outlined. We propose an intention recognition algorithm base

Dandy-Walker malformation in methylmalonic acidemia: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Methylmalonic acidemia is an organic acid metabolism disorder that usually has nonspecific clinical manifestations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-month-old female infant was admitted to the hospital for developmental retardation. Her prenatal and birth history was unremarkable. After admission, she developed dyspnea and severe anemia and was subsequently transferred to the intensive care unit. Magnetic resonance imaging of her brain showed a Dandy-Walker malformation, and metabolic screening indicated methylmalonic acidemia. Thus, she was diagnosed with methylmalonic acidemia and Dandy-W

Ocular manifestations in a patient with Dandy-Walker malformation: A case report.

We present a unique case of a ten-month-old boy with a protruding left globe and vitreous haemorrhaging, and later being diagnosed as a case of a dandy-walker syndrome (DWS) with buphthalmos and vitreous haemorrhage. Treatment is depending on the symptoms reported, thus close monitoring and a multidisciplinary approach are essential. We would like to recommend that even if there are no cardinal symptoms of DWS, paediatric patients with ocular signs should have Dandy walker Malformation (DWM) considered as a differential diagnosis.
