Common bacterial blight of bean: a model of seed transmission and pathological convergence.

BACKGROUND: Xanthomonas citri pv. fuscans (Xcf) and Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. phaseoli (Xpp) are the causal agents of common bacterial blight of bean (CBB), an important disease worldwide that remains difficult to control. These pathogens belong to distinct species within the Xanthomonas genus and have undergone a dynamic evolutionary history including the horizontal transfer of genes encoding factors probably involved in adaptation to and pathogenicity on common bean. Seed transmission is a key point of the CBB disease cycle, favouring both vertical transmission of the pathogen and worldwide d…

Novel Sulfonamide Derivatives Containing a Piperidine Moiety as New Bactericide Leads for Managing Plant Bacterial Diseases.

Plant bacterial diseases are an intractable problem due to the fact that phytopathogens have acquired strong resistances for traditional pesticides, resulting in restricting the quality and yield of agricultural products around the world. To develop new agrochemical alternatives, we prepared a novel series of sulfanilamide derivatives containing piperidine fragments and assessed their antibacterial potency. The bioassay results revealed that most molecules displayed excellent in vitro antibacterial potency towards Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac). …

OsSWEET11b, a potential sixth leaf blight susceptibility gene involved in sugar transport-dependent male fertility.

SWEETs play important roles in intercellular sugar transport. Induction of SWEET sugar transporters by Transcription Activator-Like effectors (TALe) of Xanthomonas ssp. is key for virulence in rice, cassava and cotton. We identified OsSWEET11b with roles in male fertility and potential bacterial blight (BB) susceptibility in rice. While single ossweet11a or 11b mutants were fertile, double mutants were sterile. As clade III SWEETs can transport gibberellin (GA), a key hormone for spikelet fertility, sterility and BB susceptibility might be explained by GA transport deficiencies. However, in co…

Novel Sulfonamide Derivatives Containing the α-Aminophosphonate Backbone: A Biofilm Inhibitor for Preventing and Treating Citrus Bacterial Canker.

The formation of bacterial biofilms enhances pathogen resistance, reducing the efficacy of traditional antibacterial agents. Consequently, developing new and efficient biofilm inhibitors is critical. Herein, a series of sulfonamide derivatives containing α-aminophosphonate fragments were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for antimicrobial activities. In vitro bioassay revealed the superior efficacy of compound A20 (EC50 = 26.6 μg mL-1) over the commercial bactericide thiodiazole copper (EC50 = 82.5 μg mL-1) against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac). Further studies demonstrated that A2…

Jasmonic acid and salicylic acid activate a common defense system in rice.

Jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) play important roles in plant defense systems. JA and SA signaling pathways interact antagonistically in dicotyledonous plants, but, the status of crosstalk between JA and SA signaling is unknown in monocots. Our rice microarray analysis showed that more than half of the genes upregulated by the SA analog BTH are also upregulated by JA, suggesting that a major portion of the SA-upregulated genes are regulated by JA-dependent signaling in rice. A common defense system that is activated by both JA and SA is thus proposed which plays an important role in

Distribution of type III secretion gene clusters in Burkholderia pseudomallei, B. thailandensis and B. mallei.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the causative agent of melioidosis, carries a cluster of genes closely related in organisation to the type III secretion (TTS) system gene clusters of the plant pathogens Ralstonia solanacearum and Xanthomonas spp. The TTS gene cluster (TTS1) is present only in B. pseudomallei and not in avirulent B. thailandensis. Adjacent to the gene cluster encoding putative secreton structural proteins lie a number of open reading frames (ORFs) encoding putative proteins with little or no homology to known proteins, with the exception of one predicted protein with homology to Pse…
