Quantitative development of choroid plexuses in chick embryo cerebral ventricles.

Quantitative development of choroid plexuses in cerebral ventricles of chick embryos was investigated by means of the planary projection of … f the villi, whereas that of the plexus in the fourth cerebral ventricle was caused by thinning and yawning of the villi. The area of choroid plexuses in the lateral cerebral ventricles was six or seven times larger than the sum of the areas of the remaining choroid plexuses.

Concurrence of crossed cerebellar diaschisis and parakinesia brachialis oscitans in a patient with hemorrhagic stroke.

Crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) is defined as a reduction in blood flow in the cerebellar hemisphere contralateral to the supratentorial focal lesion. The phenomenon termed parakinesia brachialis oscitans (PBO) in which stroke patients experience involuntary stretching of the hemiplegic arm during yawning is rarely reported. The concurrence of CCD and PBO has never been described. A 52-year-old man had putaminal hemorrhage and demonstrated no significant recovery in his left hemiplegia after intensive rehabilitation, but his gait improved gradually. Two months after the stroke, the single …

[Bilateral anterior operculum syndrome].

Characteristically, patients with anterior operculum syndrome (AOS), also known as Marie-Foix-Chavany syndrome cannot perform voluntary movements of the face, jaw, tongue, and pharynx. As a result, they are unable to speak, swallow, grimace, smile, or carry out any other voluntary facial masticatory or linguopharyngeal movement. At the same time, involuntary movements of the aforementioned muscles are fully preserved. Laughing, yawning, and coughing, as well as mimicking movements accompanying emotions, eye closure during sleep, or the blink reflex are unaffected. The pathoanatomic substrate o…

Dopamine and prolactin in migraine: Mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.

Migraine is a complex neurovascular disorder characterized by activation and sensitization of the trigeminovascular system. Hyperprolactinem … dopamine in migraine pathophysiology is complex. On one hand, prodromal symptoms such as nausea and yawning are considered dopamine-mediated. On the other hand, experimental studies show that dopamine directly inhibits nociceptive trigeminovascular activity in addition to lowering prolactin. Effects of a number of short peptides isolated from the brain of the hibernating ground squirrel on the EEG and behavior in rats.

Intracerebroventricular administration of the peptides kyotorphin (Tyr-Arg), neokyotorphin (Thr-Ser-Lys-Tyr-Arg), and Asp-Tyr at doses of 4 and 8 micrograms altered the behavior of rats in a manner similar to that seen after similar administration of brain fractions from hibernating ground squirrels (Citellus undulatus), which contained these peptides; there were increases in orientational reactions, increases in the frequency of stereotypical scratching movements, grooming, yawning, hiccuping, and sneezing. Animals became drowsy after 15-20 min. Peptides and brain fractions also had similar e…

Clinical Outcomes of Deep Transverse Friction Massage and Active Exercises on Pain, Quality of Life, and Maximum Mouth Opening in Patients With Temporomandibular Disorders: A Case Series.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder refers to a cluster of conditions characterized by pain in the TMJ or its surrounding tissues, functional limitations of the mandible, or clicking in the TMJ during motion. The TMJ is a bilateral synovial joint on both sides of the craniomandibular complex, involved in chewing, swallowing, speech, and other automatic movements such as yawning, grinding, or clenching. A total of 10 patients with TMJ dysfunction were included in this case series, and all were diagnosed and referred by a dentist. Physical examination was carried out by the therapist to check…

Dautrey's Procedure Revisited in Management of Recurrent Mandibular Dislocation.

Mandibular dislocation occurs when the condylar head glides out of the glenoid fossa with the condyle positioned in such a way that its posterior articulating surface lying ahead of the articular eminence. Recurrent mandibular dislocation is relatively uncommon. Patient is extremely distressed and goes through a lot of discomfort. Varied etiologies have been cited in the literature, such as keeping the mouth wide open for long periods of time during dental procedures, yawning, laughing, traumatic injuries to the mandible, psychiatric disturbances, and certain drugs. Acute dislocations are best…

Changes in the behavioral parameters following the lipopolysaccharide administration in goats.

The present study was aimed at the establishment of an experimental model for the numerical assessment of sick animal behavior. Four goats w … pared to the control period. On the other hand, the cumulative numbers of urination, defecation and yawning showed a tendency to increase but not significantly. These results suggest that stereotyped behavioral responses, which are typically seen in acute phase of sickness, can be transiently induced in goats by treating them with LPS.

The association of genetic polymorphisms in the κ-opioid receptor 1 gene with body weight, alcohol use, and withdrawal symptoms in patients with methadone maintenance.

Methadone is a synthetic opioid that binds to the κ-opioid receptor with a low affinity. This study tested the hypotheses that the genetic p … haplotype rs10958350-rs7016778-rs12675595 was associated with gooseflesh skin (global P < 0.0001), yawning (global P = 0.0001), and restlessness (global P < 0.0001) withdrawal symptoms. The findings suggest that genetic polymorphisms in OPRK1 were associated with the body weight, alcohol use, and opioid withdrawal symptoms in MMT patients.

Computerized acoustic detection of obstructive apnea.

Cardiac, respiratory and neurologic abnormalities have been identified as causes of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Recurrent central apnea (no respiratory effort or nasal/oral airflow) and obstructive apnea (respiratory effort without concurrent nasal/oral airflow) in infants are considered risk factors for SIDS. However, using currently available monitoring techniques, normal activities such as yawns, stretches and swallows cannot be distinquished from short obstructive episodes lasting less than 20 s. A system was developed to more accurately detect obstructive apnea in infants using a
