Anti-bacterial Efficacy of Zirconium Oxide Nanoparticles on Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis: An In Vitro Study.

Introduction Complex interactions between cariogenic bacteria and host factors modulate dental caries. Streptococcus mutans, a gram-positive facultative anaerobe plays a prominent role in the initiation of caries. The ability of S. mutans to adhere to salivary enamel pellicle results in an acidic local habitat for the organism. This leads to demineralization of the tooth and penetration of bacteria into the pulp leading to endodontic infections. Enterococcus faecalis, an opportunistic pathogenis a gram-positive, facultative anaerobe implicated in secondary endodontic infections. This study aim

Decorating the Node of a Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Framework to Tune Adsorption Behavior and Surface Permeation.

Surface barriers are commonly observed in nanoporous materials. Although researchers have explored methods to repair defects or create flawless crystals to mitigate surface barriers, these approaches may not always be practical or readily achievable in targeted metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In our study, we propose an alternative approach focusing on the introduction of diverse ligands onto a MOF-808 node to finely adjust its adsorption and mass transport characteristics. Significantly, our findings indicate that while adsorption curves can be inferred based on the MOF's chemical compositio

Amino Acid Complexes of Zirconium in a Carbon Composite for the Efficient Removal of Fluoride Ions from Water.

Amino acid complexes of zirconia represent an entirely new class of materials that were synthesized and studied for the first time for the decontamination of fluoride ion containing aqueous solutions. Glutamic and aspartic acid complexes of zirconia assembled with thin carbon (stacked graphene oxide) platelets deriving from graphite oxide (GO) were synthesized by a two-step method to prepare adsorbents. The characterization of the complexes was carried out using infrared spectroscopy to determine the functional groups and the types of interaction between the composites and fluoride ions. To re

Synthesis of hierarchical porous zirconium dioxide and its application in the detection of sulfonamides in animal-derived food.

In order to effectively remove grease for the detection of sulfonamides, a non-toxic and low-cost hierarchical porous zirconia material was synthesized using the dual template method. The lipid impurities in an animal-derived food matrix can be absorbed by hierarchical zirconia. A ZrO2 prepolymer was synthesized by mixing amphiphilic triblock copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(propylene glycol)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (P123) with tannin extract as the double template and Zr(SO4)2 as the metal source. After aging, drying and calcination at high temperature, the prepolymer transforms

Structural and Dynamic Analysis of Sulphur Dioxide Adsorption in a Series of Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks.

We report reversible high capacity adsorption of SO2 in robust Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF) materials. Zr-bptc (H4 bptc=biphenyl-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid) shows a high SO2 uptake of 6.2 mmol g-1 at 0.1 bar and 298 K, reflecting excellent capture capability and removal of SO2 at low concentration (2500 ppm). Dynamic breakthrough experiments confirm that the introduction of amine, atomically-dispersed CuII or heteroatomic sulphur sites into the pores enhance the capture of SO2 at low concentrations. The captured SO2 can be converted quantitatively to a pharmaceutical intermediate

The effect of diffusion hardened oxidized zirconium wear debris on cell viability and inflammation--an in vitro study.

Wear debris generation in total joint replacement remains a concern because of its association with aseptic loosening, osteolysis, and ultimately implant failure. In a quest to develop new implant materials with reduced wear and improved biocompatibility a new composition of oxidized Zr2.5Nb alloy; diffusion hardened oxidized zirconium (DHOxZr) has been developed. In this study, we have determined the in vitro biocompatibility of the wear debris of this new composition and compared it to wear debris particles of Ti6Al4V, Cobalt, and CoCr. The cytotoxicity of these particles on fibroblast-like

Electric field-enhanced trace hafnium detection in zirconium using 532 nm and 1064 nm LIBS: A comparative study.

In this study, the detection of hafnium in a zirconium matrix using laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) enhanced by an externally applied electric field under both 532 nm and 1064 nm laser excitations is reported for the first time to our knowledge. The impact of laser pulse energy, delay time, excitation wavelength and the strength of externally applied DC electric field were systematically explored to improve the limit of detection (LOD) and signal reliability. Under optimized conditions (100 mJ & 1 μs), the 532 nm excitation outperformed the 1064 nm through improved laser-plasma cou

Bio-Inspired Investigation on Dual-Pore Synergistic Effect in Zirconium Supramolecular Framework for Ethane/Ethylene Separation.

The hierarchical organization of discrete units into higher-order architectures is essential for emergent functions. Here, we present a zirconium-based supramolecular framework (SMF), SMF-F4-BDC, and demonstrate that its crystalline assembly is critical for C2H6/C2H4 separation. Guided by an "amino acid to protein" paradigm, discrete metal-organic cages (MOCs) are assembled into an ordered SMF, giving rise to a dual-pore synergistic effect (DPSE) between intrinsic and extrinsic pores. While the pristine framework exhibits a high C2H6 uptake of 57.1 cm3·g-1 at 1 bar and 298 K, structural denatu

Zirconium-Doped Ceria Oxide Nanozymes Alleviate Allergic Rhinitis by Attenuating Oxidative Stress and Stabilizing Mast Cells.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress is fundamental to the pathogenesis and progression of allergic rhinitis (AR) during mast cell (MC) degranulation. However, effective therapeutic strategies that target both oxidative stress and the degranulation process remain limited. We developed ultrasmall mPEG (2000)-PE-modified zirconium-doped cerium oxide nanoparticles (PEG-CZ NPs) with broad-spectrum reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) scavenging and intrinsic phosphatase-like activity and investigated their prophylactic efficacy in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced mouse model of AR. METHODS: PEG-CZ NPs we

Enhanced Stable and Efficient of Dual-Ligand Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Synergistic Photodynamic Inactivation.

Porphyrins, known for generating toxic singlet oxygen (1O2) to combat bacteria, face challenges such as hydrophilicity and limited lifespan and 1O2 yield. Conversely, triterpenoid compounds like ammonium glycyrrhizinate (AG) offer antioxidative and antibacterial properties but lack efficacy and stability. Combining them in Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) yields dual-ligand zirconium (Zr)-basedMOFs (M-TG), capitalizing on porphyrins' membrane-disrupting ability and AG's inhibition of bacterial membrane synthesis for a synergistic antibacterial effect. M-TG resolves activity loss, enhances react

High-Intensity Ultrasound-Assisted Low-Temperature Formulation of Lanthanum Zirconium Oxide Nanodispersion for Thin-Film Transistors.

The process complexity, limited stability, and distinct synthesis and dispersion steps restrict the usage of multicomponent metal oxide nanodispersions in solution-processed electronics. Herein, sonochemistry is employed for the in situ synthesis and formulation of a colloidal nanodispersion of high-permittivity (κ) multicomponent lanthanum zirconium oxide (LZO: La2Zr2O7). The continuous propagation of intense ultrasound waves in the aqueous medium allows the generation of oxidant species which, on reaction, form nanofragments of crystalline LZO at ∼80 °C. Simultaneously, the presence of acidi

Optimizing Zirconium-89 labeling for chimeric antigen receptor T cell PET imaging by comparing desferrioxamine and oxine.

This study aimed to optimize Zirconium-89 (89Zr) labeling strategies for in vivo tracking of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell migration using positron emission tomography (PET). The performances of the [89Zr]Zr-p-isothiocyanatobenzyl-desferrioxamine (DFO) and [89Zr]Zr-oxine methods were compared to identify the most suitable chelator and activity concentration for cell labeling. CD19 CAR-Jurkat T cells were labeled with each [89Zr]Zr complex at different activity concentrations following optimization of the chelator amount and incubation time, and were then evaluated for cell viability,

Zirconium-89-Oxine Cell Tracking by PET Reveals Preferential Monocyte Recruitment to Cancer and Inflammation over Macrophages.

Background/Objectives: Cell-based therapies have become increasingly important in the treatment of cancers and inflammatory diseases; however, therapies utilizing monocyte-macrophage lineage cells remain relatively underexplored. Non-invasive cell tracking allows a better understanding of the fate of such cells, which is essential for leveraging their therapeutic potential. Here, we employed a Zirconium-89 (89Zr)-oxine cell labeling method to compare the trafficking of monocytes and macrophages in vivo. Methods: Mouse bone marrow-derived monocytes and macrophages were each labeled with 89Zr-ox

Unlocking a Dual-Channel Pathway in CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol over Single-Site Zirconium on Amorphous Silica.

Converting CO2 into methanol on a large scale is of great significance in the sustainable methanol economy. Zirconia species are considered to be an essential support in Cu-based catalysts due to their excellent properties for CO2 adsorption and activation. However, the evolution of Zr species during the reaction and the effect of their structure on the reaction pathways remain unclear. Herein, single-site Zr species in an amorphous SiO2 matrix are created by enhancing the Zr-Si interaction in Cu/ZrO2 -SiO2 catalysts. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals that the coordination en

Zirconium-oxo Nodes of MOFs with Tunable Electronic Properties Provide Effective ⋅OH Species for Enhanced Methane Hydroxylation.

Direct conversion of methane to high value-added oxygenates under mild conditions has attracted extensive interest. However, the over-oxidation of target products is usually unavoidable due to the easily excessive activation of C-H bond on the sites of supported metal species. Here, we identified the most efficient Zr-oxo nodes of UiO-66 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) catalysts for the selective oxidation of methane with H2 O2 . These nodes were modified by three types of benzene 1, 4-dicarboxylates (NH2 -BDC, H2 BDC, and NO2 -BDC). Detailed characterizations and DFT calculations revealed tha
