Adolescent food insecurity impairs gut signal sensitivity and cue-induced appetitive behaviours in female rats.

Unpredictable and insufficient access to food, known as food insecurity, is associated with the development of obesity. However, causal mechanisms underlying this paradoxical relationship remain poorly understood. Using a rat model of food insecurity, this study investigated whether food insecurity causes dysregulated feeding behaviours, specifically impaired gut signal sensitivity and enhanced cue-driven appetitive responses. Adolescent female rats were assigned to receive either ad libitum chow access (Food secure), 90% caloric restriction (Food restricted) or unpredictable quantity and timi

Differential effects of adolescent fatty acid amide hydrolase and monoacylglycerol lipase inhibition on adolescent and adult behaviors in male rats.

RATIONALE: Endocannabinoid signaling during adolescence plays a critical role in brain development and shapes both healthy and maladaptive behaviors, influencing the risk for neuropsychiatric disorders in adulthood. OBJECTIVES: The present study examines the effects of disrupted catabolism of the endocannabinoids 2-arachidonylglycerol (2-AG) and N-arachidonoylethanolamine (AEA) during early adolescence on adolescent and adult behaviors in male rats. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats received daily injections with the monoacylglycerol lipase inhibitor JZL184 (JZL; 10 mg/kg, ip), the fatty aci

Mapping potential pathways from polygenic liability through brain structure to psychological problems across the transition to adolescence.

BACKGROUND: We used a polygenic score for externalizing behavior (extPGS) and structural MRI to examine potential pathways from genetic liability to conduct problems via the brain across the adolescent transition. METHODS: Three annual assessments of child conduct problems, attention-deficit/hyperactivity problems, and internalizing problems were conducted across across 9-13 years of age among 4,475 children of European ancestry in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive DevelopmentSM Study (ABCD Study®). RESULTS: The extPGS predicted conduct problems in each wave (R2 = 2.0%-2.9%). Bifactor models re

Adolescents' Hormonal Responses to Social Stress and Associations with Adolescent Social Anxiety and Maternal Comfort: A Preliminary Study.

Both social support and social stress can impact adolescent physiology including hormonal responses during the sensitive transition to adolescence. Social support from parents continues to play an important role in socioemotional development during adolescence. Sources of social support and stress may be particularly impactful for adolescents with social anxiety symptoms. The goal of the current study was to examine whether adolescent social anxiety symptoms and maternal comfort moderated adolescents' hormonal response to social stress and support. We evaluated 47 emotionally healthy 11- to 14

Barriers to family intervention to promote child and adolescent vision health: A qualitative study based on community practice in China.

PURPOSE: Child and adolescent myopia is a widespread public health problem worldwide, with high incidence, low age at onset, and severe symptoms. Family management plays a very important role in the prevention and management of myopia in children and adolescents; however, even with knowledge of the health risks of myopia, parents still continue to selectively ignore the importance of visual health, resulting in difficulties with family care related to childhood and adolescent myopia. The purpose of this study was to explore the barriers to family intervention for child and adolescent vision.

Adolescent exposure to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and ethanol heightens sensitivity to fear stimuli.

Cannabis use disorder (CUD) has doubled in prevalence over the past decade as a nation-wide trend toward legalization allows for increased drug accessibility. As a result, marijuana has become the most commonly used illicit drug in the United States particularly among the adolescent population. This is especially concerning since there is greater risk for the harmful side effects of drug use during this developmental period due to ongoing brain maturation. Increasing evidence indicates that CUD often occurs along with other debilitating conditions including both alcohol use disorder (AUD) and

Constellations of family risk for long-term adolescent antisocial behavior.

Adolescent antisocial behavior (ASB) can have long-term individual and societal consequences. Much of the research on the development of ASB considers risk and protective factors in isolation or as cumulative indices, likely overlooking the co-occurring and interacting nature of these factors. Guided by theories of ASB risk (i.e., coercive family process, disengagement), this study uses latent profile analysis to evaluate whether there are subgroups of families in the population that conform to specific constellations of risk factors prescribed by established theories of risk for ASB, and whet

Adolescence versus adulthood: Differences in basal mesolimbic and nigrostriatal dopamine transmission and response to drugs of abuse.

Epidemiological studies have shown that people who begin experimenting drugs of abuse during adolescence are more likely to develop substance use disorders, and the earliest is the beginning of their use, the greatest is the likelihood to become dependent. Understanding the neurobiological changes increasing adolescent vulnerability to drug use is becoming imperative. Although all neurotransmitter systems undergo relevant developmental changes, dopamine system is of particular interest, given its role in a variety of functions related to reward, motivation, and decision making. Thus, in the pr

Reward and immune responses in adolescent females following experimental traumatic brain injury.

The pathology of traumatic brain injury (TBI) adversely affects many brain regions, often resulting in the development of comorbid psychiatric disorders including substance use disorders (SUD). Although traditionally thought to be an epidemic that predominantly affects males, recent clinical studies report females have higher rates of concussions and longer recovery times than males. Yet, how neurotrauma, particularly deep within the brain, between the sexes is differentially manifested remains largely unknown. The risk of TBI peaks during adolescence when neuronal networks that regulate rewar

Concomitant behavioral and prefrontal cortex neuronal responses following acute and chronic methylphenidate exposure in adolescent and adult rats.

There is growing concern that the psychostimulant Methylphenidate (MPD) is being abused for cognitive enhancement and recreation by healthy adults and adolescents seeking to improve their work or academic performance. This study concomitantly recorded the behavioral and prefrontal cortex (PFC) neuronal activity in freely behaving animals exposed to acute and chronic MPD doses (0.6, 2.5, and 10.0 mg/kg MPD) in order to compare MPD effects on adult and adolescent rats. The PFC is one of the primary brain areas affected by MPD and the drug of choice for treating ADHD. Moreover, the PFC is one of

Need for and Steps Toward a Clinical Guideline for the Telemental Healthcare of Children and Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This article identifies and describes key considerations toward the development of a clinical guideline intended to optimize telemental healthcare (TMH) of children and adolescents. METHODS: The literature was searched with key terms and title words. Of 2824 articles that met primary or secondary key word search criteria, 326 met both criteria, and 118 thematically related directly to child and adolescent TMH. Only 44 studies met levels of evidence I-III and expert recommendation criteria used in clinical guidelines; review of their references found 8 additional studies (52 total).

Early adversity contributes to chronic stress induced depression-like behavior in adolescent male rhesus monkeys.

Chronic stress is an important cause for depression. However, not everyone who is exposed to chronic stress will develop depression. Our previous studies demonstrated that early adversity can cause lasting changes in adolescent rhesus monkeys, but depressive symptoms have not been observed. Compared to adults, it is still unknown that whether adolescent rhesus monkeys experiencing early adversity are more likely to develop depressive symptoms. In this study, we investigated the long term relationship between early adversity, chronic stress and adolescent depression for the first time. Eight ma

Alexithymia in parents and adolescent anorexic daughters: comparing the responses to TSIA and TAS-20 scales.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature has been focusing on individual alexithymia in anorexia nervosa, while there are only scarce and conflicting studies on alexithymia in the families of anorexic patients, despite the important role played by family dynamics in the development of the anorexic disorder, especially in adolescent patients. The aim of this study is to assess alexithymia in anorexic adolescent patients and in their parents using a multimethod measurement to gain more direct, in-depth knowledge of the problem. METHODS: Forty-six subjects, anorexic adolescent patients and their

Cross-national evidence for the clustering and psychosocial correlates of adolescent risk behaviours in 27 countries.

BACKGROUND: According to Jessor's Problem Behaviour Theory (PBT) and Moffitt's theory of adolescence-limited antisocial behaviour, adolescent risk behaviours cluster and can be predicted by various psychosocial factors including parent, peer and school attachment. This study tested the potential influence of the sociocultural, or macro-level, environment on the clustering and correlates of adolescent risk behaviour across 27 European and North American countries. METHODS: Analyses were based on data from the 2009-10 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. Participants compromis

A longitudinal study of maternal prenatal, postnatal and concurrent depressive symptoms and adolescent well-being.

BACKGROUND: Maternal depression is known to be a risk for abnormal child development. Girls and boys have been found to respond differently to maternal depression. Although prenatal and postnatal depression has been widely studied, longitudinal studies of adolescent outcome are still rare. METHODS: The original sample of 349 mothers in this longitudinal study was collected in 1989-1990 in Tampere, Finland. At the latest stage, of the 327 contacted in 2006, 191 mothers and 192 adolescents aged 16 to 17 years participated in the study. Maternal depressive symptoms were screened using the Edinbu
