Echolalic speech in childhood autism. Consideration of possible underlying loci of brain damage.

The speech of echolalic autistic children is (1) specifically lacking in appropriate use of expressive-intonational features, but (2) the echolalic child's clear articulation of words and phrases indicates that discrimination of phonemic features is intact. The impairment in aphasic disorders is just the reverse. Failure to attend to auditory stimuli and the characteristic language disorder are among the most consistent findings in autistic children; they could be related. Discrimination of differential stress emphasis is the way the normal young child extracts major morphemic word stems and s

Mendelian randomization analysis of labor anesthesia and adverse neonatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Despite the lack of data from randomized controlled trials, studies have indicated that labor anesthesia may be associated with neonatal asphyxia, neonatal respiratory distress and adverse neonatal neurological outcomes. Therefore, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis to explore the potential causal relationships between labor anesthesia methods and adverse neonatal outcomes. METHOD: We collected genome-wide association study (GWAS) data, including on spinal (n = 3,780), epidural (n = 3,970), and other labor anesthesia methods (n = 4,094), as well as neonatal

Determinants of low fifth minute Apgar scores among newborns at North Shoa Zone Public Hospitals in Ethiopia.

Low APGAR scores are the cause of 13.6% of new born morbidity and mortality. Even though much has been done, still the levels of birth asphyxia and neonatal mortality in Ethiopia are significantly high. This study aimed to assess determinants of low fifth-minute APGAR scores among singleton new born babies. An institution-based unmatched case-control study was conducted among 426 neonates. Cases and controls were selected by systematic random sampling. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed. Association was assessed by adjusted odd ratio with 95% confidence. Th

Correlation between umbilical cord blood pH with perinatal asphyxia and early neonatal outcome.

Perinatal asphyxia is a common cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality especially in low resource developing countries like Nepal. Early intervention and appropriate management is very crucial for preventing mortality and long-term sequalae. This study aims to understand the severity of perinatal asphyxia and its correlation with umbilical cord blood pH. This hospital-based prospective study aimed to assess the correlation between cord blood pH and the severity of perinatal asphyxia, specifically its association with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and early neonatal outcomes. A total

Incidence of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Global Developmental Delay in Infants With Brachial Plexus Birth Injury: An Early Association With Birth Asphyxia.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and global developmental delay (GDD) are 2 common central nervous system (CNS) diagnoses in children. We hypothesized that the incidence of ASD and GDD is higher among patients with brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI), and that the subgroup of patients with BPBI and CNS diagnoses would have increased rates of maternal risk factors and birth-related complications. METHODS: A single institution prospective cohort of 849 patients with BPBI was used. Demographics, perinatal history, maternal factors and treatment, and patient outcomes were recorded. Char

Determinants of Birth Asphyxia Among Neonates in Selected Hospitals of Ethiopia: A Multi-site Unmatched Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Birth asphyxia is a significant cause of most perinatal mortality and morbidity worldwide. In Ethiopia, maternal medical conditions, such as pregnancy-induced hypertension and diabetes, have significantly contributed to the increase in neonatal morbidity and adverse birth outcomes. The study aimed to identify the determinants of birth asphyxia among neonates delivered in Southwest Shoa Zone public hospitals, Ethiopia. METHODS: A retrospective unmatched case-control study design was used among neonates delivered at a selected hospital in Southwest Shoa Zone, Ethiopia, between 20 Aug

Incidence and predictors of acute kidney injury among asphyxiated neonates in comprehensive specialized hospitals, northwest Ethiopia, 2023.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is characterized by a sudden decline in the kidneys' abilities to remove waste products and maintain water and electrolyte homeostasis. This study aims to determine the incidence and predictors of acute kidney injury among neonates with perinatal asphyxia admitted at the neonatal intensive care unit of West Amhara Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, 2023. Multicentred institution-based retrospective follow-up study was conducted from October 1, 2021, to September 30, 2023, among 421 perinatal asphyxia neonates. A simple random sampling technique wa

Mitochondrial dynamics and sex-specific responses in the developing rat hippocampus: Effect of perinatal asphyxia and mesenchymal stem cell Secretome treatment.

AIMS: Perinatal asphyxia is one of the major causes of neonatal death at birth. Survivors can progress but often suffer from long-term sequelae. We aim to determine the effects of perinatal asphyxia on mitochondrial dynamics and whether mesenchymal stem cell secretome (MSC-S) treatment can alleviate the deleterious effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Animals were subjected to 21 min of asphyxia at the time of delivery. MSC-S or vehicle was intranasally administered 2 h post-delivery. Mitochondrial mass (D-loop, qPCR), mitochondrial dynamics proteins (Drp1, Fis1 and OPA1, Western blot), mitochondr

Rates of metabolic acidosis at birth and Apgar score values at 1, 5, and 10 min in term infants: a Swedish cohort study.

Background Metabolic acidosis, measured in arterial umbilical cord blood at birth, is the most accepted definition of birth asphyxia. The aim of the study was to investigate the rates of metabolic acidosis across the entire range of Apgar score values (0-10) at 1, 5, and 10 min in term infants. Methods In a population-based Swedish cohort of births between 2008 and 2013, we included 85,076 term (≥37 weeks) non-malformed infants with information from umbilical arterial blood gas analyses and complete information on Apgar scores (0-10) at 1, 5, and 10 min. Results Rates of metabolic acidosis gen

A practice improvement package at scale to improve management of birth asphyxia in Rwanda: a before-after mixed methods evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) is a competency-based educational method for an evidence-based protocol to manage birth asphyxia in low resource settings. HBB has been shown to improve health worker skills and neonatal outcomes, but studies have documented problems with skills retention and little evidence of effectiveness at large scale in routine practice. This study examined the effect of complementing provider training with clinical mentorship and quality improvement as outlined in the second edition HBB materials. This "system-oriented" approach was implemented in all public heal
