Nasopharyngeal encephalocele: report of transcranial and transpalatal repair with a 25-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: : Encephaloceles are an extension or protrusion of any intracranial matter through a cranial bone defect. The sphenoethmoidal encephalocele is often fatal. For those who survive long enough, expeditious repair is critical. We report a case that was repaired successfully via a combined transcranial and transpalatal approach, and because of successful repair, the patient underwent multiple secondary reconstructions resulting in a 25-year follow-up. CLINICAL REPORT: : A 3960-g, term male infant from a normal gestation was delivered via cesarean delivery for breech position. Initial e

Risk factors for cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy is a major cause of crippling in children, but it's etiology is poorly understood. This case control study was done to assess some of the identified risk factors for cerebral palsy, 125 cerebral palsy cases selected from hospital clinic and 125 age and sex matched neighbourhood controls, all aged less than 5 years and residing in Delhi (India) were studied. Information regarding antenatal, natal and postnatal period was collected by mother's interview, and wherever available, from hospital records with the study subjects. Most common type of cerebral palsy was spastic (88%). Qua

Natural history of trisomy 18 and trisomy 13: I. Growth, physical assessment, medical histories, survival, and recurrence risk.

The natural history of trisomy 18 and trisomy 13 was investigated using data derived from parent questionnaires and medical records from 98 families with an index case of trisomy 18 and 32 families with an index case of trisomy 13. Data are presented on pregnancy, delivery, survival, medical complications, immunizations, growth, cause of death, cytogenetics, and recurrence risk. Half of the trisomy 18 babies were delivered by C-section. Fetal distress was a factor in half, and the only reason in a third of C-section deliveries. One minute Apgar scores were significantly lower in C-section and

BACKGROUND: Prelabor rupture of membrane defined as the rupture of fetal membranes before the beginning of uterine contractions, is a common complication of pregnancy and the leading cause of preterm birth. In Ethiopia, the prevalence of prelabor rupture of membrane varied significantly between settings due to variations in risk factors. Besides, there was no study conducted using primary data, particularly in the Jimma zone, Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to identify determinants of prelabor rupture of membrane among pregnant women attending governmental hospitals in the Jimma zone, Or

Congenital subaxial cervical subluxation presenting as a bilateral Erb's palsy: surgical management, rehabilitation, and outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Subaxial spine injuries during infancy are uncommon. CASE REPORT: We present the case of an infant referred to our brachial plexus clinic with proximal weakness of both arms noted immediately following a complicated breech delivery. Nerve conduction studies were consistent with bilateral proximal upper plexus injury; however, radiological evaluation revealed a C4-C5 subluxation and MRI features of bilateral C5 root avulsions. He was immobilized in a cervical-body orthosis and underwent open reduction and posterior C4-C5-C6 fixation at 10 weeks age using luque rods, sublaminar wi

An overview of the health economic implications of elective caesarean section.

The caesarean section rate has continued to increase in most industrialised countries, which raises a number of economic concerns. This review provides an overview of the health economic implications of elective caesarean section. It provides a succinct summary of the health consequences associated with elective caesarean section for both the infant and the mother over the perinatal period and beyond. It highlights factors that complicate our understanding of the health consequences of elective caesarean section, including inconsistencies in definitions and coding of the procedure, failure to
