Salivary gland function is severely disrupted by radiation therapy used to treat patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer and by Sjögren's syndrome. The resulting condition, which results in xerostomia or dry mouth, is due to irreversible loss of the secretory acinar cells within the major salivary glands. There are presently no treatments for the resolution of xerostomia. We report a case of lipoleiomyoma which arose in retroperitoneum and presented with progressively distended abdomen in a 56-yr-old woman. The tumor was well encapsulated and consisted of two components, benign smooth muscle cells and mature adipose tissue without any atypia. It is likely to be mistaken as extrarenal angiomyolipoma, well-differentiated liposarcoma and leiomyoma with fatty change. We review the histologic characteristics of previously reported myolipoma and describe essential points of differential diagnosis.

An abdominal mass detected in a 36-year-old man was thought from radiologic studies to be a renal neoplasm, but at surgery the kidney was found to be uninvolved. The 9.5-cm retroperitoneal tumor was resected totally and found to be encapsulated, and it appeared to be benign by light microscopy. The pattern of the spindle cells throughout the tumor suggested a cellular schwannoma, but immunocytochemical and ultrastructural studies did not support schwannian differentiation and instead revealed epithelial and smooth muscle features compatible with a myoepithelioma.

The most common neoplasms of the anterior mediastinum are thymomas, lymphomas, and germ cell tumors. Surgical exploration was the routine approach to the diagnosis and management of these tumors. This is no longer true. The appropriate initial treatment of these neoplasms varies from surgical resection to radiation therapy to systemic chemotherapy. Except for the small well-encapsulated anterior mediastinal mass, it is imperative that a definitive tissue diagnosis be obtained before initiating treatment. An overview of these tumors and the specific approaches to their treatment are detailed.

GNeosomes, lysosomotropic lipid vesicles decorated with guanidinoneomycin, can encapsulate and facilitate the cellular internalization and lysosomal delivery of cargo ranging from small molecules to high molecular weight proteins, in a process that is exclusively dependent on cell surface glycosaminoglycans. Their cellular uptake mechanism and co-localization with lysosomes, as well as the delivery, release, and activity of internalized cargo, are quantified. GNeosomes are proposed as a universal platform for lysosomal delivery with potential as a basic research tool and a therapeutic vehicle.
