Thermal comfort indices of female Murrah buffaloes reared in the Eastern Amazon.

The study aimed to develop new and more specific thermal comfort indices for buffaloes reared in the Amazon region. Twenty female Murrah buffaloes were studied for a year. The animals were fed in pasture with drinking water and mineral supplementation ad libitum. The following parameters were measured twice a week in the morning (7 AM) and afternoon (1 PM): air temperature (AT), relative air humidity (RH), dew point temperature (DPT), wet bulb temperature (WBT), black globe temperature (BGT), rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), and body surface temperature (BST). The temperature an

Projected Years Lost due to Disabilities (YLDs) for bacillary dysentery related to increased temperature in temperate and subtropical cities of China.

The impact of climate change on enteric infection has been a concern in recent years. This study aims to project disability burdens of bacillary dysentery (BD) associated with increasing temperature in different climatic zones in China. Years Lost due to Disabilities (YLDs) were used as the measure of burden of bacillary dysentery in this study. A temperate city in northern China and a subtropical city in southern China were selected as the study areas. The quantitative relationship between temperature and the number of cases in each city was base on the regression models developed in our prev

The contributions of community, family, and school variables to student victimization.

An ecological perspective was used to predict school violence from a number of variables describing the students and their families based on nationally representative sample of 10,400 students in grades 7-11 in 162 schools across Israel. Self-administered anonymous questionnaires that included a scale for reporting victimization by serious and moderate physical violence, threats, and verbal-social victimization were filled out during class. Hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) examined the relationships between students' reports of victimization and student level variables (gender, age) and the

Derivation and validation of clinical prediction models for Cryptosporidium-attributed acute diarrhea in African children.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision-support tools have the potential to guide empiric treatment and prioritize diagnostic testing at the individual-level, and screening strategies for vaccine and therapeutic trials at the population-level. Such tools for the parasitic pathogen Cryptosporidium, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), are lacking. We aimed to develop clinical prediction models to identify Cryptosporidium-attributed acute diarrhea in young children. METHODS: For model derivation, we used clinical and demographic data from

Predicting the Potential Suitable Distribution of Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus in China Using a BIOMOD2 Ensemble Model.

Tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) is an emerging tobamovirus that threatens tomato production and seedling trade. We used a BIOMOD2 ensemble to model present and future environmental suitability in China from 35 screened occurrence records, climatic predictors, and agricultural context data. Climate projections were based on BCC-CSM2-MR under SSP126, SSP245, SSP370, and SSP585 for the 2050s and 2090s. The ensemble achieved calibration TSS = 0.831 and AUC/ROC = 0.958. Spatial-block evaluation was lower and more variable, so the calibration metrics do not demonstrate equally strong geogra

Heating the land cools the eastern and equatorial Pacific.

The unresolved recent multidecadal cooling of the eastern Pacific and its uncertain future remain key puzzles in climate dynamics. We propose the land-sea heating contrast as a potential driver of this phenomenon. To test this, we amplify the land-sea contrast by quadrupling carbon dioxide (CO2) only over land in a global coupled climate model. We show that this causes a pronounced transient cooling of the eastern and equatorial Pacific. A transient 1%-per-year CO2 increase over land produces decadal cooling, suggesting relevance to the observed eastern Pacific cooling. Targeted simulations wi

Discrepancies in precipitation trends between observational and reanalysis datasets in the Amazon Basin.

The Amazon rainforest is a region of global importance as it accounts for 10% of terrestrial biodiversity and stores at least 10 years' worth of global anthropogenic carbon dioxide ([Formula: see text]) emissions. However, the rainforest is currently under tremendous pressure from deforestation and the impacts of climate change, leading to rainforest degradation and perturbations of the regional carbon and water cycles. Using data sets from various sources, we produce spatial and temporal analyses of precipitation for the Amazon Basin from 1980 to 2022. Results demonstrate substantial seasonal

Leveraging ecosystems responses to enhanced rock weathering in mitigation scenarios.

Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is deemed necessary to attain the Paris Agreement's climate objectives. While bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) has generated substantial attention, sustainability concerns have led to increased examination of alternative strategies, including enhanced rock weathering (EW). We analyse the role of EW under cost-effective mitigation pathways, by including the CDR potential of basalt applications from silicate weathering (geochemical CDR) and enhanced ecosystem growth and carbon storage in response to phosphorus released by basalt (biotic CDR). Using a

Biased perceptions explain collective action deadlocks and suggest new mechanisms to prompt cooperation.

When individuals face collective action problems, their expectations about others' willingness to contribute affect their motivation to cooperate. Individuals, however, often misperceive the cooperation levels in a population. In the context of climate action, people underestimate the pro-climate positions of others. Designing incentives to enable cooperation and a sustainable future must thereby consider how social perception biases affect collective action. We propose a theoretical model and investigate the effect of social perception bias in non-linear public goods games. We show that diffe

A dynamic, ensemble learning approach to forecast dengue fever epidemic years in Brazil using weather and population susceptibility cycles.

Transmission of dengue fever depends on a complex interplay of human, climate and mosquito dynamics, which often change in time and space. It is well known that its disease dynamics are highly influenced by multiple factors including population susceptibility to infection as well as by microclimates: small-area climatic conditions which create environments favourable for the breeding and survival of mosquitoes. Here, we present a novel machine learning dengue forecasting approach, which, dynamically in time and space, identifies local patterns in weather and population susceptibility to make e

Beyond planetary-scale feedback self-regulation: Gaia as an autopoietic system.

The Gaia hypothesis states that the Earth is an instance of life. However, appraisals of it tend to focus on the claim that life is a feedback self-regulator that controls Earth's chemistry and climate dynamics, yet, self-regulation by feedbacks is not a definitive characteristic of living systems. Here, we consider the characterization of biological systems as autopoietic systems (causally organized to self-produce through metabolic efficient closure) and then ask whether the Gaia hypothesis is a tractable question from this standpoint. A proof-of-concept based on Chemical Organization Theory

Large contribution of natural aerosols to uncertainty in indirect forcing.

The effect of anthropogenic aerosols on cloud droplet concentrations and radiative properties is the source of one of the largest uncertainties in the radiative forcing of climate over the industrial period. This uncertainty affects our ability to estimate how sensitive the climate is to greenhouse gas emissions. Here we perform a sensitivity analysis on a global model to quantify the uncertainty in cloud radiative forcing over the industrial period caused by uncertainties in aerosol emissions and processes. Our results show that 45 per cent of the variance of aerosol forcing since about 1750

Denning Phenology Mediates Sea-Ice Loss Impacts on Early Reproductive Success in Polar Bears.

Climate change is disrupting myriad biological processes, including the ability of species to synchronize life-history events with optimal environmental conditions, with potential fitness impacts. Changes in migratory and breeding phenology and their consequences on fitness have been well studied in birds and some mammals. By contrast, changes in the phenology of overwinter sheltering and their influence on fitness have rarely been investigated. Pregnant female polar bears (Ursus maritimus) spend the winter fasting in a maternity den where they give birth and nurse their cubs until emergence i

How Did a Size-Divergent Water Strider Species Group Exhibiting an East Asia-Eastern North America Disjunction Originate and Diversify?

The classic East Asia-Eastern North America (EA-ENA) disjunction, well-documented in temperate plants, is typically attributed to the fragmentation of once-continuous high-latitude ranges by climatic cooling and regional extinction. Whether this model extends to insects, particularly aquatic groups, remains largely untested with genomic data. Here, we integrate whole-genome sequencing, ddRAD-seq and morphology with phylogenetic, phylogeographic, genotype-environment association (GEA) and niche modelling analyses to reconstruct the origin and diversification of the Aquarius conformis species gr

The Effects of Climate Change and Greening of Vegetation on Spatiotemporal Variation of Evapotranspiration in the Haihe River Basin, China.

Highly accurate evapotranspiration (ET) estimation and understanding the impacts of climatic and land use change on ET are essential for water resources management in the Haihe River Basin (HRB). This study estimated spatial and temporal changes of ET and its drivers over the period 2000-2020, using the Priestley-Taylor Jet Propulsion Laboratory (PT-JPL) model. Validation performed with the observations of 11 eddy covariance sites showed that the PT-JPL model can simulate ET with high accuracy (R 2 = 0.64, RMSE = 1.32 mm/day, NSE = 0.57). During the 21-year study period, the mean annual ET in

Development of a national antibiotic multimetric index for identifying watersheds vulnerable to antibiotic pollution.

Improved surveillance of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance (AR) throughout the environment is an important aspect of the prevention and control of threats posed to human and ecological health. In response to field investigations often limited by resources and time, this study aims to develop a systematic approach to assess watershed vulnerability to antibiotic pollution and AR by integrating modeling and field studies. The national antibiotic pollution vulnerability index was developed to identify watersheds most impacted by antibiotic sources. The index incorporates multiple metrics repre

Rift Valley Fever and West Nile virus vectors in Morocco: Current situation and future anticipated scenarios.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF) and West Nile virus (WNV) are two important emerging Arboviruses transmitted by Aedes and Culex mosquitoes, typically Ae. caspius, Ae. detritus and Cx. pipiens in temperate regions. In Morocco, several outbreaks of WNV (1996, 2003 and 2010), affecting horses mostly, have been reported in north-western regions resulting in the death of 55 horses and one person cumulatively. Serological evidence of WNV local circulation, performed one year after the latest outbreak, revealed WNV neutralizing bodies in 59 out of 499 tested participants (El Rhaffouli et al., 2012). Climate and poverty in Africa South of the Sahara.

To estimate the effects of weather conditions on welfare globally, cross-country comparisons need to rely on international poverty lines and comparable data sources at the micro-level. To this end, nationally representative household surveys can offer a useful instrument, also at the sub-national level. This study seeks to expand the existing knowledge on the determinants of poverty in Africa south of the Sahara (SSA), examining how long-term climatic conditions and year-specific weather shocks affect expenditure per capita. We take advantage of a novel and unique dataset combining consumption
