Rising global temperatures and increasingly frequent heatwaves pose a growing threat to human health. Understanding how humans tolerate environmental heat has therefore become a central challenge in environmental physiology. Building upon the scientific legacy of John R. Sutton, this narrative review examines the physiological determinants of human heat tolerance and their implications for health in a warming climate. We first consider approaches used to characterize thermal strain, highlighting evidence that body temperature measurements provide only a partial representation of whole-body hea

Sustainable food systems are increasingly challenged by climate change, resource constraints, market volatility, and growing food demand, making accurate forecasting of food production essential for food security and long-term sustainability. Despite the growing use of machine learning in agricultural forecasting, studies directly modeling the Food Production Index (FPI) within a sustainable food systems framework remain limited, particularly in emerging economies. This study addresses this gap by forecasting Türkiye's Food Production Index using agricultural, macroeconomic, and trade-related

The Mountains of Central Asia constitute one of the world's most vulnerable yet least protected biodiversity hotspots. While considerable research has addressed grasslands and forests, arable lands in this region-particularly within the Central Tian-Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan-remain poorly studied despite their high floristic richness and conservation potential. To address this gap, we conducted systematic vegetation surveys across Kyrgyz croplands to establish the first comprehensive baseline inventory of the segetal flora. Our study aimed to characterise cropland flora composition, examine

Crop domestication has induced a severe genetic bottleneck that reduces the adaptive diversity present in modern cultivars. Standard intra-population genomic prediction models reliant on linear reference genomes and SNPs fail to capture the full spectrum of phenotypic variance hidden in wild relatives. Realizing this potential requires broadening the predictive paradigm from selection within narrow breeding populations toward evolutionary-scale inference across the entire wild-to-cultivated continuum. This missing heritability is largely sequestered within complex structural variations such as

BACKGROUND: The recent declines in youth mental health highlight the need for research into the factors underlying distress and those that foster well-being. Open-ended text responses offer the potential to reveal novel insights, but remain an underused resource. Advances in natural language processing (NLP) offer powerful tools for efficiently analyzing text in large samples.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to extract meaningful themes from young adults' open-text responses about their future hopes and worries, and to test associations of these themes with internalizing symptoms.
METHOD: Data c

Coastal ecosystems, while vital for their ecosystem services, face growing threats from climate change and human activities. Traditional methods for monitoring these systems, such as morphological species identification and laboratory analysis, are time-consuming and resource-intensive, restricting their scalability. Recent advances in Deep Learning have demonstrated significant potential for automating organism identification and counting from images, streamlining ecological research efforts. Using a common marine gastropod, Peringia ulvae, as a model species, we evaluate the potential for st

Viola hybanthoides is a narrowly endemic species restricted to two isolated danxia landscapes (Pingshi and Mount Danxiashan) in Southeast China, serving as an ideal model for studying endemism in fragmented habitats. Using ddRAD-seq and shallow genome sequencing, we genotyped 156 individuals from 13 populations of the species to explore its genetic patterns and evolutionary processes. Results showed extremely low within-population genetic diversity (H E = 0.058 ± 0.028), probably driven by limited pollen and seed dispersal ranges, recurrent founder events, and persistent genetic drift exacerb

Melasma is a common pigmentary skin disorder characterised by symmetrical brownish patches on the face, which significantly impacts patients' quality of life. This article provides a comprehensive review of the latest research progress on melasma from the perspective of the exposome, a dynamic interactive model. The exposome encompasses all environmental exposures and their biological responses experienced by an individual throughout their lifespan. We systematically explore the synergistic pathogenic mechanisms of endogenous exposures (such as hormonal levels, oxidative stress, thyroid dysfun

Cold stress (CS) represents a major environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth, development, and productivity. To cope with low-temperature conditions, plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms for CS perception and response, mediated through complex cellular signaling networks and physiological processes. Central to these adaptive responses are phytohormones, which function either independently or through synergistic and antagonistic interactions to fine-tune CS tolerance. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the roles of major classical phytohormones and signaling me

Poultry nutrition simultaneously affects animal health, productive efficiency, product quality and the environmental burdens associated with feed production and manure management. Nutritional interventions may generate synergies among these outcomes, but they can also shift costs or environmental impacts across biological and supply-chain boundaries. This review critically evaluates low-protein diets, functional additives, feed enzymes, alternative protein sources, precision-feeding technologies and nutritional approaches to manure-emission mitigation. The evidence indicates that improved inte

During manure storage, methane (CH4) is produced by anaerobic decomposition of organic matter by methanogens. Frequent removal and further processing of manure from the barn can reduce CH4 emissions. However, little is known about how much CH4 is lost during the adaptation of methanogens to the changing environment from the gut to storage. The objective was to determine the breakdown of organic matter and emission of CH4 from dairy cattle and pig slurry in the first 3 days after excretion. CH4 and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fresh slurry (<1 h old) were measured in climate respiration

Photoperiodic sensitivity is an essential factor that may affect agricultural practices under current climate scenarios. This study used pea (Pisum sativum) to examine effects of varying photoperiods on growth and photosynthetic parameters and then reveal the mechanistic basis of this process by linking them with tissue-specific distribution of auxin and regulation of related genes. This was achieved by transcriptome sequencing, genome-wide gene family identification, and expression pattern analysis. Best results in terms of growth and yield were obtained with a 20 h/4 h light/dark photoperiod

Accurate water quality forecasting-specifically tracking phytoplankton dynamics like chlorophyll a-is crucial for safeguarding aquatic ecosystems and global water security. Deep temporal architectures offer powerful non-linear modeling capabilities, promising to overcome the parameterization bottlenecks of traditional process-based models. However, current applications treat these models as black boxes, leaving it obscure how specific architectural modules interact with the intrinsic ecological time scales governing aquatic environments. Here, we reveal a fundamental architectural-ecological d

Bacterial communities are vital to northern peatlands' carbon and nutrient cycling, one of the Earth's largest terrestrial carbon stores. However, their diversity and ecological roles at broad geographic scales remain partially understood, limiting our ability to predict their response to global change. Here, we combine a trans-Holarctic survey across 171 Sphagnum-dominated peatlands (SDPs) with a continental-scale reciprocal transplantation experiment to quantify how bacterial diversity shapes carbon and nutrient cycling across bioclimatic gradients. We show that bacterial diversity and compo

Organosulfur compounds, crucial constituents of atmospheric aerosols, have adverse impacts on both air quality and climate change through their physicochemical properties. Their sources are diverse, including both primary emissions and secondary formation processes. Here, we establish a new approach for quantifying the total amount of organosulfur compounds by combining optimized high-temperature acidic hydrolysis (140 °C, 8 h, pH 2) and HNO3/H2O2 digestion (210 °C, 4 h) to convert organosulfur compounds into sulfate, followed by ion chromatography (IC) analysis. The method achieved high recov

Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) is a light-absorbing organic aerosol that contributes to positive radiative forcing. BrC evolves substantially with atmospheric photochemistry, which remains poorly understood in the rapidly warming Arctic, leading to uncertainties in assessing BrC radiative forcing. In this study, we characterize the photochemical evolution of BrC subgroups by measuring optical absorption and fluorescence of methanol-soluble BrC (MeS-BrC) and water-soluble BrC (WS-BrC) in Arctic Svalbard from May 2022 to April 2023. Parallel factor analysis identified one fluorescent humic-like

Plants encounter multiple abiotic stresses. Among them, heat and drought stress play a substantial role in reducing the agricultural productivity of commercial plants. Hence, wild and underutilized plants can be a potential alternative as they are naturally tolerant to extreme climatic conditions and are a rich source of nutrition. Manual stress and disease detection is a laborious and expensive process, and hence automation in this field is required to reduce agricultural losses. This study evaluates the prediction and detection of abiotic stress in Acacia senegal bipinnate leaves, exploring

The increasing frequency of extreme temperature events under climate change poses a growing threat to the stability of tropical sea cucumber aquaculture. To characterize the molecular responses of the tropical sea cucumber Stichopus monotuberculatus to acute temperature stress, juveniles were exposed for 96 h to 15 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C, 30 °C, and 35 °C, followed by transcriptomic profiling of the intestine. By transcriptomic analysis, 2258, 634, 1618, and 2980 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified at 15, 20, 30, and 35 °C compared to control, respectively. More DEGs were generally

Plants are continuously exposed to a wide range of abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, temperature extremes, nutrient deficiency, and heavy metal toxicity, which severely constrain growth and productivity. To cope with these challenges, plants have evolved sophisticated regulatory networks involving phytohormones and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). This review provides a comprehensive overview of the biogenesis and functional roles of major ncRNA classes' microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs) and their dynamic interplay with phytohormonal signali

OBJECTIVE: Food waste is a major problem that contributes to climate change, while inequities in access to healthy food persist among socially vulnerable populations. Surplus food redistribution initiatives operate at the intersection of waste reduction and efforts to support food access. Our objective was to explore and better understand the perspectives and experiences of organizational stakeholders within the food redistribution system in the Canton of Vaud, Switzerland.
DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured qualitative interviews, as well as field obse
