Posttraining androgens' enhancement of cognitive performance is temporally distinct from androgens' increases in affective behavior.

Steroid hormone-induced variations in spatial learning and memory tasks have been reported. In this study, androgens' effects in various cognitive and affective tasks were investigated in order to determine whether any observed differences in cognitive performance could be due to affective changes produced by the hormones. Ovariectomized rats (N = 72) received 0.0, 3.0, or 7.5 mg/kg subcutaneously, of testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT), or 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha,17 beta-diol (3 alpha-Diol) suspended in 10% ethanol/sesame oil v/v. A large-scale multi-centre study characterising atrophy heterogeneity in Alzheimer's disease.

Previous studies identified atrophy-based Alzheimer's disease(AD) subtypes linked to distinct clinical symptoms, but their consistency across subtyping approaches remains unclear. This large-scale study evaluates subtype concordance using two data-driven approaches. In this work, we analyzed data from n=10,011 patients across 10 AD cohorts spanning Europe, the US, and Australia, extracting regional volumes using Freesurfer. To characterize atrophy heterogeneity in the AD continuum, we developed a two-step approach, Snowphlake (Staging NeurOdegeneration With PHenotype informed progression timeL

Closed-Loop Frontal Midlineθ Neurofeedback: A Novel Approach for Training Focused-Attention Meditation.

Cortical oscillations serve as an index of both sensory and cognitive processes and represent one of the most promising candidates for training and targeting the top-down mechanisms underlying executive functions. Research findings suggest that theta (θ) oscillations (3-7 Hz) recorded over frontal-midline electrodes are broadly associated with a number of higher-order cognitive processes and may serve as the mechanistic backbone for cognitive control. Frontal-midline theta (FMθ) oscillations have also been shown to inversely correlate with activity in the default mode network (DMN), a network

Detection of cognitive impairment using a machine-learning algorithm.

PURPOSE: The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) is one of the most frequently used bedside screening measures of cognition. However, the Korean Dementia Screening Questionnaire (KDSQ) is an easier and more reliable screening method. Instead, other clinical variables and raw data were used for this study without the consideration of a cutoff value. The objective of this study was to develop a machine-learning algorithm for the detection of cognitive impairment (CI) based on the KDSQ and the MMSE. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The original dataset from the Clinical Research Center for Dementia of Sou

[Update on current care guidelines: schizophrenia].

Early recognition and treatment of persons at risk of psychosis is emphasized in the updated Current Care Schizophrenia guideline. Antipsychotic medication is effective in the treatment. To avoid side-effects, the lowest possible effective dosage is recommended. Psychosocial interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoeducation and social skills training, as well as cognitive rehabilitation should be integrated with other treatments according to patient's individual needs. Supported employment is a feasible option to some patients. Care of people with schizophrenia is primarily

Motion-Based Technology for People With Dementia Training at Home: Three-Phase Pilot Study Assessing Feasibility and Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Persons with dementia tend to be vulnerable to mobility challenges and hence face a greater risk of fall and subsequent fractures, morbidity, and mortality. Motion-based technologies (MBTs), also called sensor-based technologies or virtual reality, have the potential for assisting physical exercise and training as a part of a disease management and rehabilitation program, but little is known about its' use for people with dementia. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of MBT physical training at home for people with dementia.

Multi-technology Parent Training in Exposure and Response Prevention for Youth with Obsessive-Compulsive disorder.

Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder significantly impacts the lives of children and families, with cognitive-behavioural therapy including exposure and response prevention (ERP) being the current recommended treatment. However, several barriers prevent children and families from receiving timely access to evidence-based care. Parent training in ERP, integrated into multi-technology programs, offers an innovative approach to maintain therapeutic support by training parents to implement ERP at home, overcoming delays to accessing care. These programs have demonstrated preliminarily effective

Cognitive performance and variability in dromedary camels: insights from a comparative psychometric approach.

Contemporary research in animal cognition has expanded our understanding of non-human intelligence, yet behavioural and cognitive traits in dromedary camels remain largely unexplored. This study pioneers the empirical assessment of cognitive performance and variability in dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) using a comparative psychometric framework adapted from human and animal cognition protocols. A total of 130 Canarian dromedaries were evaluated across thirteen cognitive traits, with individual performance indices calculated through a mental age-based model. Results revealed substantial inte

[Cognitive-behavioral treatment for impulse control disorders].

OBJECTIVES: This paper reviews the cognitive-behavioral treatment of kleptomania, compulsive buying, and pathological gambling. METHOD: A review of the published literature was conducted. RESULTS: Treatment research in all of these areas is limited. The cognitive-behavioral techniques used in the treatment of kleptomania encompass covert sensitization, imaginal desensitization, systematic desensitization, aversion therapy, relaxation training, and alternative sources of satisfaction. Regarding compulsive buying, no empirical support for treatment exists but common techniques examined were co

Playing Super Mario increases oculomotor inhibition and frontal eye field grey matter in older adults.

Aging is associated with cognitive decline and decreased capacity to inhibit distracting information. Video game training holds promise to increase inhibitory mechanisms in older adults. In the current study, we tested the impact of 3D-platform video game training on performance in an antisaccade task and on related changes in grey matter within the frontal eye fields (FEFs) of older adults. An experimental group (VID group) engaged in 3D-platform video game training over a period of 6 months, while an active control group was trained on piano lessons (MUS group), and a no-contact control grou

The effects of valproic acid on appetitive and aversive instrumental learning in adult rats.

Antiepileptic medications are the frontline treatment for seizure conditions. However, these medications are not without cognitive side effects. Previously, our laboratory reported learning deficits in phenytoin and carbamazepine-treated rats. In the experiment reported here, the effects of valproic acid (VPA) have been studied using the same instrumental training tasks. VPA-treated rats displayed a severe deficit in acquiring a tone-signaled avoidance response. This deficit was attenuated in animals that had prior training in an appetitive context. Thus, this deficit is specific to learning i

Ultra-Early Screening of Cognitive Decline Due to Alzheimer's Pathology.

Alzheimer's pathology can be assessed and defined via Aβ and tau biomarkers. The preclinical period of Alzheimer's disease is long and lasts several decades. Although effective therapies to block pathological processes of Alzheimer's disease are still lacking, downward trends in the incidence and prevalence of dementia have occurred in developed countries. Accumulating findings support that education, cognitive training, physical exercise/activities, and a healthy lifestyle can protect cognitive function and promote healthy aging. Many studies focus on detecting mild cognitive impairment (MCI)…
