Recent contributions on selected aspects of the pathology of tubal and paratubal neoplasms are reviewed after a brief historical perspective. The most important, considering both frequency and clinical importance, are those pertaining to tubal carcinoma. We report our findings on 51 patients with a familial breast and/or ovarian cancer risk who underwent prophylactic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (pBSO). Patients undergoing a pBSO between January 1, 1997, and December 31, 2003, at the University Hospitals Leuven were reviewed retrospectively. Out of 51 patients, 37 (72.5%) underwent genetic testing, while the 14 others (27.5%) underwent pBSO on the sole basis of a positive family history only. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this retrospective multicenter study was to assess the pattern of failures and survival of patients with primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube.
METHODS: The hospital records of 88 patients with primary carcinoma of the fallopian tube were reviewed. Surgery was the initial therapy for all patients. Tumor stage was I in 21 (23.9%), II in 21 (23.9%), III in 43 (48.8%), and IV in 3 (3.4%) patients. Postoperative treatment was given without well-defined protocols. The median follow-up of survivors was 55 months (range, 7-182).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanisms involved in the stimulatory effect of fallopian tube epithelial cell coculture on sperm movement characteristics.
DESIGN: Human spermatozoa were cultured with human fallopian tube epithelial cell monolayers. A microporous membrane was used to prevent sperm-to-epithelial cell contact. Sperm movement characteristics were measured at 4 and 24 hours.

INTRODUCTION: Primary carcinoma of the Fallopian tube (FTC) is a rare but extremely aggressive neoplasm. It must be expected to cause up to 40% of tumor-related deaths even in Stage I, and up to 57% in Stage II. Due to its rarity, there exist only a few and divergent reports on the value of adjuvant therapy. Therefore the present study aims at evaluating the influence of postoperative adjuvant therapy on FTC by studying the effects of irradiation and chemotherapy on the overall survival of patients in Stages I and II.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to determine whether tumor necrosis factor-alpha is produced in response to infection with Chlamydia trachomatis in the fallopian tube.
STUDY DESIGN: Fallopian tubes were harvested at the time of abdominal hysterectomy and processed by standard tissue culture techniques. Tubal segments were inoculated with Chlamydia trachomatis serotype E/UW-5/CX. At 48 hours of incubation supernatant fluid was assayed for tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Tubal segments were stained for chlamydial inclusions and tumor necrosis factor-alpha by use of immunohistochemical techniques.
