INTRODUCTION: The goals of the study were to test the value of coagulation tests to predict bleeding events during fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) and to identify risk factors.
METHODS: A monocentric prospective study of 426 procedures performed by one physician was realized. A standardized questionnaire and coagulation tests including prothrombine time, activated cephaline time and platelets counts were performed before the procedure. Bleeding events, defined by a loss of more than 50 ml of blood, were recorded for all patients.

Combined glottography shows clinical potential but has only had limited use in monitoring laryngeal function before and after surgery. A new endoscopic method of injecting botulinum toxin into the thyroarytenoid muscles for treatment of adductor spasmodic dysphonia was evaluated. 23 cases of flexible retrograde nephroscopy system for undiagnosed hematuria or filling defect are reviewed. The introduction was carried out by combining hydraulic dilation, rigid ureterorenoscopy and a working sheath. The indications were merely diagnostic (filling defects and/or haematuria). We prospectively compared sputum induction with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in HIV positive patients presenting with acute respiratory episodes and also assessed the effects of using an experienced respiratory physiotherapist on the diagnostic yield from induced sputum. Based on a period of introduction with the vitrectomy technic the visual acuity results in 143 consecutive cases performed between 1976 and 1980 are related to the anamnestic information, the pre-, per- and post-operative findings. The combination of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was evaluated as a primary diagnostic procedure in 91 consecutive patients suspected of pancreatic or biliary tract disease. In 77 (85%) of the patients, the origin, nature, or extent of disease was established by endoscopy (13 patients), pancreatography (25 patients), or cholangiography (39 patients). This combined technique compares favorably with other means of diagnosing pancreatic or biliary tract disease.

A comparative study is reported of endoscopy and the barium meal in the investigation of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum, based on 281 endoscopies. There was total agreement between the two methods in 239 instances, including 101 normals, 80 peptic ulcers and nine cancers. In nine instances with unequivocal follow-up information there was definite disagreement, radiology being wrong in two (incorrect confident diagnoses of carcinoma) and endoscopy being wrong in seven (three carcinomas and four ulcers not diagnosed). In a comparising study of 191 liver-patients, who were laparoscopical and most of them histological examined, the results of registrated varicose veins of the esophagus by x-ray and fiber-esophagoscopical examination were compared. Bronchial brushing was performed concomitantly with transnasal flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy in 44 patients with localized peripheral pulmonary lesions and absence of visible bronchial abnormality down to subsegmental level. BACKGROUND: During adrenalectomy, surgeons have traditionally relied on their subjective visual skills to distinguish adrenal glands (AGs) from retroperitoneal fat and surrounding structures, while ultrasound and exogenous contrast agents have been employed for intraoperative AG visualization, all of which have their limitations. We present a novel label-free approach that uses near-infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF) detection, which demonstrates potential for enhanced intraoperative AG visualization and efficient tumor resection during adrenalectomies.
