Evidence of gray matter reduction and dysfunction in chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with cognitive deficits and morphometric brain abnormalities in childhood and a markedly elevated risk of schizophrenia in adolescence/early adulthood. Determining the relationship between neurocognition and neuroimaging findings would yield crucial information about childhood neurodevelopment and provide a basis for the study of the trajectory that occurs on the pathway to psychosis. We compared morphometric brain findings between non-psychotic children with 22q11DS (n = 22) and healthy controls (n = 16), and examined the associatio

Endovascular therapy of distal anterior cerebral artery aneurysms-an effective treatment option.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of APAs is associated with relatively high morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to illustrate the technical achievements of endovascular procedures in the distal anterior cerebral artery area, technical difficulties and how they can be overcome, and the outcome of endovascular treatment of APAs. METHODS: Between 1997 and 2006, of 49 patients with APAs at our institution, 29 were treated endovascularly (4.1% of all endovascularly treated aneurysms; F:M = 3.8; mean age, 52.8 +/- 11.5 years), and 12 were treated surgically. Twenty-one (72.4%) of the e

Response monitoring, repetitive behaviour and anterior cingulate abnormalities in autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are characterized by inflexible and repetitive behaviour. Response monitoring involves evaluating the consequences of behaviour and making adjustments to optimize outcomes. Deficiencies in this function, and abnormalities in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) on which it relies, have been reported as contributing factors to autistic disorders. We investigated whether ACC structure and function during response monitoring were associated with repetitive behaviour in ASD. We compared ACC activation to correct and erroneous antisaccades using rapid presentation eve

Neurobiology and treatment of compulsive hoarding.

Compulsive hoarding is a common and often disabling neuropsychiatric disorder. This article reviews the phenomenology, etiology, neurobiology, and treatment of compulsive hoarding. Compulsive hoarding is part of a discrete clinical syndrome that includes difficulty discarding, urges to save, clutter, excessive acquisition, indecisiveness, perfectionism, procrastination, disorganization, and avoidance. Epidemiological and taxometric studies indicate that compulsive hoarding is a separate but related obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder that is frequently comorbid with obsessive-compulsive dis

Anterior cingulate activity in bulimia nervosa: a fMRI case study.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is a leading noncommunicable disease worldwide; however, its association with occupational factors, particularly long working hours, has not been elucidated. This study examined the longitudinal association between long working hours and dental caries in a large Korean working-age cohort. METHODS: Using data from the Kangbuk Samsung Health Study (2013-2024), we analyzed 1 136 767 person-visits of workers aged 20-64 years. Long working hours were defined as >52 hours per week. Dental caries was identified from clinical oral examinations performed by licensed dentists.

Comparison of regional cerebral blood flow in patients with anorexia nervosa before and after weight gain.

We investigated changes in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) before and after weight gain in patients with restrictive anorexia nervosa (AN-R) in comparison with findings in normal subjects. We assessed resting rCBF using single photon emission computed tomography with technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime in 12 AN-R patients and 11 controls. Each patient was examined at two time points, at the beginning of treatment and after weight gain (average examination interval=88+/-26 days). Control subjects were examined only once. Before treatment, the AN-R group had lower rCBF in the bila

Alterations of membrane properties and effects of D-serine on NMDA-induced current in rat anterior cingulate cortex neurons after monoarthritis.

Accumulated evidence implicates the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in pain processing. The activation of the NMDA receptor requires the occupation of both the glutamate site and the glycine site. d-Serine released by astrocytes is presumed to be an endogenous ligand for the glycine site of the NMDA receptor. Using whole-cell patch clamp recording, membrane characteristics and effects of exogenous d-serine on NMDA-evoked currents were examined in neurons in ACC slices from normal and complete Freund's adjuvant-induced monoarthritic rats. Neurons from rats with monoarthritis exhibited more depo

Differences in brain responses to visceral pain between patients with irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis.

Patients with mild chronic inflammation of the rectum or ileum have reduced perceptual responses to rectosigmoid distension compared to patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The current study sought to identify differences in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) during rectal distension, which might correspond to these perceptual differences. In 8 male ulcerative colitis (UC) patients with quiescent disease, 7 male IBS patients and 7 healthy male controls, rCBF was assessed using 15O-water positron emission tomography at baseline and during actual and anticipated but undelivered rectal

Temporal lobe abnormalities in semantic processing by criminal psychopaths as revealed by functional magnetic resonance imaging.

We tested the hypothesis that psychopathy is associated with abnormalities in semantic processing of linguistic information. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to elucidate and characterize the neural architecture underlying lexico-semantic processes in criminal psychopathic individuals and in a group of matched control participants. Participants performed a lexical decision task in which blocks of linguistic stimuli alternated with a resting baseline condition. In each lexical decision block, the stimuli were either concrete words and pseudowords or abstract words and pseud

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of bipolar disorder versus intermittent explosive disorder in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of bipolar disorder in juveniles is controversial. This study was designed to compare proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS) in patients with bipolar disorder or intermittent explosive disorder, two groups with symptomatic overlap but categorical distinction. Children with intermittent explosive disorder designate patients whose illness clinically resembles pediatric bipolar disorder but does not satisfy DSM-IV criteria for mania. Based on the authors' previous report of higher levels of (1)H MRS cingulate myo-inositol/creatine in youngsters with bipolar dis

An FMRI Stroop task study of ventromedial prefrontal cortical function in pathological gamblers.

OBJECTIVE: Function of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex has been implicated in impulse control. The authors used the Stroop paradigm to test attention and response inhibition during the presentation of congruent and incongruent stimuli in male pathological gamblers and a group of comparison subjects. METHOD: Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to examine ventromedial prefrontal cortex function during Stroop performance. RESULTS: In response to infrequent incongruent stimuli, pathological gamblers demonstrated decreased activity in the left ventromedial prefrontal c

Emotional and personality changes following cingulotomy.

The effects of bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) lesions on emotional and personality functioning were studied. Patients undergoing cingulotomy for chronic intractable pain were assessed on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), the Profile of Mood States (POMS), cognitive tests, and pain ratings, pre- and postsurgically. Patients with intractable pain, not treated with cingulotomy, served as controls. Cingulotomy patients experienced reductions in POMS-Tension, POMS-Anger, and MMPI Scale 7 (Psychasthenia) compared with baseline and the controls. POMS-Tension was signi

Ictal speech arrest and parasagittal lesions.

Lesions in the parasagittal region may cause seizures with speech arrest. To correlate lesion localization within the parasagittal region with ictal speech function we studied 11 patients with parasagittal lesions. The exact lesion localization was assessed with magnetic resonance imaging. In all patients with speech arrest the lesion involved the left superior frontal gyrus (n = 6), in 3 patients the lesion was confined to this gyrus. Speech arrest did not occur in patients with right-sided lesions (n = 4) or left-sided lesions outside the superior frontal gyrus (n = 1). Our data suggest that

Paving the way for precision treatment of psychiatric symptoms with functional connectivity neurofeedback.

Treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) remains relatively homogeneous, despite patients having heterogeneous subsets of symptoms with differing underlying neural aberrations. Demonstrating potential for a more individualised treatment approach, we recently showed that normalisation of a neural network and a corresponding reduction in related symptoms can be achieved using real-time fMRI functional connectivity neurofeedback (FCNef). Specifically, we showed that brooding rumination but not anxiety symptoms decreased as functional connectivity between the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (D

The Brain Endocannabinoid System is Differentially Regulated in Male and Female Patients with First-Episode Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: A sex difference in the clinical presentation of schizophrenia is well known. Males have on average an earlier symptom onset, worse functional capacity, and more negative symptoms. Studies on the neurobiological correlates of psychosis show that brain endocannabinoid system (ECS) is dysregulated in male patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP). We now evaluated whether the brain ECS is also altered in female patients with FEP. STUDY DESIGN: In this cross-sectional case-control study, brain CB1R availability was measured in 39 participants, including groups of mal

Neural correlates of postoperative pain in patients with rotator cuff tear following arthroscopic surgery: a resting-state fMRI study.

This study aims to explore the neural correlates of postoperative pain and its relationship with preoperative psychological issues in patients with rotator cuff tear (RCT). Functional MRI data were collected from 78 RCT patients and 48 healthy controls (HC). Voxel-wise comparisons assessed regional homogeneity (ReHo) differences between groups. Pearson correlation and mediation analyses investigated the links between clinical data and brain changes. Additionally, machine learning using support vector machines (SVM) classified RCT patients based on postoperative pain intensity. RCT patients sho

Resting-state functional connectivity of the fronto-limbic and default mode network as neural correlates of antidepressant response in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet antidepressant response remains highly variable, with many patients failing to achieve remission. Resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) studies have linked MDD to large-scale brain network dysregulation, but methodological inconsistencies and limited focus on treatment response have hindered clinical translation. METHODS: We conducted a resting-state fMRI study as part of an 8-week antidepressant trial on 86 patients with MDD and 93 healthy controls (HCs). Utilizing a seed-to-voxel approach base

Middle frontal gyrus volume mediates the relationship between interleukin-1β and antidepressant response in major depressive disorder.

Inflammation is a leading biological risk factor contributing to unfavorable outcomes of major depressive disorder (MDD). Both inflammation and depression are associated with similar alterations in brain structure, indicating that brain structural alterations could serve as a mediating factor in the adverse influence of inflammation on clinical outcomes in MDD. Nonetheless, longitudinal research has yet to confirm this hypothesis. Therefore, this study aimed at elucidating the relationships between peripheral inflammatory cytokines, gray matter volume (GMV) alterations, and antidepressant resp

Functional disruption in prefrontal-striatal network in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts and repetitive, compulsive behaviors. While a cortico-striatal-limbic network has been implicated in the pathophysiology of OCD, the neural correlates of this network in OCD are not well understood. In this study, we examined resting state functional connectivity among regions within the cortico-striatal-limbic OCD neural network, including the rostral anterior cingulate cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, ventromedial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, thalamus and c

Resting-state fMRI analysis in apathetic Alzheimer's disease.

PURPOSE: Diagnosis of comorbid psychiatric conditions are a significant determinant for the prognosis of neurodegenerative diseases. Apathy, which is a behavioral executive dysfunction, frequently accompanies Alzheimer's disease (AD) and leads to higher daily functional loss. We assume that frontal lobe hypofunction in apathetic AD patients are more apparent than the AD patients without apathy. This study aims to address the neuroanatomical correlates of apathy in the early stage of AD using task-free functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Patients (n=20) were recruited from th
