Regulation of melanocyte stem cells in the pigmentation of skin and its appendages: Biological patterning and therapeutic potentials.

Skin evolves essential appendages and indispensable types of cells that synergistically insulate the body from environmental insults. Residing in the specific regions in the skin such as epidermis, dermis and hair follicle, melanocytes perform an array of vital functions including defending the ultraviolet radiation and diversifying animal appearance. As one of the adult stem cells, melanocyte stem cells in the hair follicle bulge niche can proliferate, differentiate and keep quiescence to control and coordinate tissue homeostasis, repair and regeneration. In synchrony with hair follicle stem

The complete mitochondrial genome of Boeseman's rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani Allen & Cross, 1980).

In this study, the mitochondrial genome of Melanotaenia boesemani (Allen & Cross, 1980 ) (Atheriniformes: Melanotaeniidae) was sequenced for the first time. The assembled mitogenome consisting of 16 493 bp, includes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, 2 ribosomal RNAs genes and 1 putative control region. The overall base composition of M. boesemani is 27.88% for A, 29.92% for C, 15.74% for G, 26.47% for T and shows 96% identities to Lake Kutubu rainbowfish, Melanotaenia lacustris. These data would provide useful molecular information for phylogenetic relationships within the family Mela

C-Nap1 mutation affects centriole cohesion and is associated with a Seckel-like syndrome in cattle.

Caprine-like Generalized Hypoplasia Syndrome (SHGC) is an autosomal-recessive disorder in Montbéliarde cattle. Affected animals present a wide range of clinical features that include the following: delayed development with low birth weight, hind limb muscular hypoplasia, caprine-like thin head and partial coat depigmentation. Here we show that SHGC is caused by a truncating mutation in the CEP250 gene that encodes the centrosomal protein C-Nap1. This mutation results in centrosome splitting, which neither affects centriole ultrastructure and duplication in dividing cells nor centriole function

Depigmentation caused by application of the active brightening material, rhododendrol, is related to tyrosinase activity at a certain threshold.

BACKGROUND: Tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme required for melanin production, has been targeted to develop active brightening/lightening materials for skin products. Unexpected depigmentation of the skin characterized with the diverse symptoms was reported in some subjects who used a tyrosinase-competitive inhibiting quasi-drug, rhododendrol. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mechanism underlying the depigmentation caused by rhododendrol-containing cosmetics, this study was performed. METHODS: The mechanism above was examined using more than dozen of melanocytes derived from donors of differ

Lasers and light-based therapies in ethnic skin: treatment options and recommendations for Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI.

Ethnic skin or 'skin of colour', which is characterized by increased epidermal melanin, labile melanocytes and reactive fibroblast responses, poses special challenges for the use of laser and light-based therapies. These therapies are associated with a greater risk of dyspigmentation and scarring in ethnic skin and therefore require careful selection of device and treatment parameters to minimize complications. Whereas early-generation lasers for hair removal and resurfacing were generally contraindicated for individuals with Fitzpatrick skin phototypes (SPT) IV-VI, advances in the past decade

Hemimegalencephaly in a patient with a neurocutaneous syndrome.

A 5-year-old girl with a history of hypomelanosis of Ito and intractable epilepsy was evaluated for possible resective surgery. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an enlarged right hemisphere, whereas electrographic seizures were arising from the right hemisphere or had a generalized onset. The patient was believed to be a good candidate for hemispherectomy, but the family was hesitant and started a modified Atkins diet. Her seizure control has improved, but she continues to have weekly seizures. Hypomelanosis of Ito is a well-known cause of hemimegalencephaly and is often associated with intra

Coexistence of two neurocutaneous syndromes: tuberous sclerosis and hypomelanosis of Ito.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and hypomelanosis of Ito (HI) are two uncommon neurocutaneous syndromes and their coexistence is extremely rare. An epileptic child presented with progressively increasing multiple hypopigmented macules arranged in a linear and whorled pattern along the lines of Blaschko over the trunk and limbs, characteristic of HI. He also had facial angiofibromas, ash-leaf and confetti macules and shagreen patches. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed cortical tubers and subependymal nodules; which are diagnostic of TSC. The TSC defining loci have been mapped to C

Hypopigmented mycosis fungoides in childhood and adolescence.

We present a case of purely hypopigmented mycosis fungoides of 8-years duration in an 18-year-old woman who responded readily to psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) treatment. The literature pertaining to hypopigmented mycosis fungoides is reviewed.
