Laryngopharyngeal reflux image quantization and analysis of its severity.

Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a prevalent disease affecting a high proportion of patients seeking laryngology consultation. Diagnosis is made subjectively based on history, symptoms, and endoscopic assessment. The results depend on the examiner's interpretation of endoscopic images. There are still no consistent objective diagnostic methods. The aim of this study is to use image processing techniques to quantize the laryngeal variation caused by LPR, to judge and analyze its severity. This study proposed methods of screening sharp images automatically from laryngeal endoscopic images and u

Comparative quantification of primary mitral regurgitation by computer modeling and simulated echocardiography.

Clinical investigations have demonstrated that mitral regurgitation (MR) quantification using echocardiography (echo) may significantly underestimate or overestimate the regurgitant volume, especially for two-dimensional (2D) echo. Computer modeling and simulated echo were conducted to evaluate the fundamental assumptions in the echo quantification of primary MR that is due to posterior mitral leaflet prolapse. The theoretical flaw of the proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) method originates from the assumption that the MR flow rate is the product of the isovelocity surface area and alias

A Review of the Applications of Dual-Energy CT in Acute Neuroimaging.

Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) is a promising tool with increasing availability and multiple emerging and established clinical applications in neuroradiology. With its ability to allow characterization of materials based on their differential attenuation when imaged at two different energy levels, dual-energy CT can help identify the composition of brain, neck, and spinal components. Virtual monoenergetic imaging allows a range of simulated single energy-level reconstructions to be created with postprocessing. Low-energy reconstructions can aid identification of edema, ischemia, and subt

Superior skin cancer classification by the combination of human and artificial intelligence.

BACKGROUND: In recent studies, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) outperformed dermatologists in distinguishing dermoscopic images of melanoma and nevi. In these studies, dermatologists and artificial intelligence were considered as opponents. However, the combination of classifiers frequently yields superior results, both in machine learning and among humans. In this study, we investigated the potential benefit of combining human and artificial intelligence for skin cancer classification. METHODS: Using 11,444 dermoscopic images, which were divided into five diagnostic categories, novel de

Computed Tomography Angiographic Assessment of Acute Chest Pain.

Acute chest pain is a leading cause of Emergency Department visits. Computed tomography angiography plays a vital diagnostic role in such cases, but there are several common challenges associated with the imaging of acute chest pain, which, if unrecognized, can lead to an inconclusive or incorrect diagnosis. These imaging challenges fall broadly into 3 categories: (1) image acquisition, (2) image interpretation (including physiological and pathologic mimics), and (3) result communication. The aims of this review are to describe and illustrate the most common challenges in the imaging of acute

Classification of the level of mandibular atrophy - A computer-assisted study based on 500 CT scans.

OBJECTIVE: For the optimal treatment of patients with highly atrophic mandibles, it is required to assess and quantify the extent of atrophy. The classification schemes that are well established today are known to be limited with respect to objectivity and reproducibility. Thus, the aim of the study was to generate a computer-aided method of classification, investigate its applicability in comparison with the established methods, and apply it to a large set of data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mandibular geometries were segmented from 500 Multislice (MSCT) datasets of atrophic and non-atrophic man

Measurement error in CT assessment of appendix diameter.

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal diameter continues to be cited as an important criterion for diagnosis of appendicitis by computed tomography (CT). OBJECTIVE: To assess sources of error and variability in appendiceal diameter measurements by CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this institutional review board-approved review of imaging and medical records, we reviewed CTs performed in children <18 years of age between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2010. Appendiceal diameter was measured in the axial and coronal planes by two reviewers (R1, R2). One year later, 10% of cases were remeasured. For patients who had multi

A swarm optimized neural network system for classification of microcalcification in mammograms.

Early detection of microcalcification clusters in breast tissue will significantly increase the survival rate of the patients. Radiologists use mammography for breast cancer diagnosis at early stage. It is a very challenging and difficult task for radiologists to correctly classify the abnormal regions in the breast tissue, because mammograms are noisy images. To improve the accuracy rate of detection of breast cancer, a novel intelligent computer aided classifier is used, which detects the presence of microcalcification clusters. In this paper, an innovative approach for detection of microcal

BrainPrompt+: Multi-Level Brain Prompt Learning for Knowledge-Guided Neurological Disorder Identification.

Accurate identification of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is challenging due to subtle early-stage symptoms and heterogeneous brain dynamics. Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) enables the construction of functional brain networks, where Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have shown promise for disease classification. However, existing GNN-based methods face three key limitations: correlation-based graph construction introduces noise and negative edges; domain knowledge about brain regions is ignored; and demo

RLAD: A Reliable Hippo-Guided Multi-Task Model for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis.

Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is crucial for its prevention, and hippocampal atrophy is a significant lesion for early diagnosis. The current DL-based AD diagnosis methods only focus on either AD classification or hippocampus segmentation independently, neglecting the correlation between the two tasks and lacking pathological interpretability. To address this issue, we propose a Reliable Hippo-guided Learning model for Alzheimer's Disease diagnosis (RLAD), which employs multi-task learning for AD classification as a main task supplemented by hippocampus segmentation. In vivo classification of neuropathological disease stages in Parkinson's disease by diffusion tensor imaging.

BACKGROUND: A neuropathological staging system for Parkinson's disease (PD) proposes that PD may disseminate in a sequential regional pattern in the brain during six disease stages. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can identify PD-associated patterns of brain alterations at the group level. OBJECTIVE: (1) To develop a framework for a hypothesis-guided DTI-based approach targeted to automatically analyze in vivo the fiber tracts that are typically involved at each neuropathological stage of PD, and (2) to apply this framework to a large sample of MRI datasets of patients with PD in comparison wi

Interpretable Multimodal Learning for Cardiovascular Hemodynamics Assessment.

Pulmonary Arterial Wedge Pressure (PAWP) is an essential cardiovascular hemodynamics marker to detect heart failure. In clinical practice, Right Heart Catheterization is considered a gold standard for assessing cardiac hemodynamics while non-invasive methods are often needed to screen high-risk patients from a large population. In this paper, we propose a multimodal learning pipeline to predict PAWP marker. We utilize complementary information from Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMR) scans (short-axis and four-chamber) and Electronic Health Records (EHRs). We extract spatio-temporal featu

A hybrid deep learning framework for accurate breast cancer classification using MRI images.

Early and accurate detection of breast cancer is crucial to enhance patient results, especially in high-risk populations where magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is intensively used. This study shows a deep learning-based framework for the automatic classification of benign and malignant breast lesions using MRI images. To guarantee accurate patient-level annotations, a large-scale dataset comprising around 25,000 breast MRI images was constructed using an extensive preprocessing and labeling procedure. A hybrid feature-fusion model that integrates MobileNetV2 and VGG16 in a parallel structure w

Automated detection of cerebral microbleeds on ex-vivo MRI scans of community-based older adults.

Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are small hemosiderin deposits visible on T2*-weighted MRI that have been associated with cerebrovascular pathology, cognitive decline, and increased stroke risk. While CMBs have been studied extensively in living populations, their relationship to neuropathology assessed at autopsy remains incompletely understood. Large-scale MRI-pathology studies are needed to clarify these associations, but manual annotation of CMBs on ex-vivo MRI is time-consuming and labor-intensive, creating a critical bottleneck. Automated detection of CMBs on ex-vivo MRI in community-based o

Enhanced diabetic retinopathy detection via multimodal fusion of fundus imaging features and clinical demographic information using verifiable convolutional neural network.

Traditional systems of ocular disease diagnosis and many deep learning-based systems are limited in their practice to analyzing fundus images from a single eye, often using raw, unprocessed data. This fails to include the critical correlation between bilateral eyes, has several issues such as low image contrast, noise, and class imbalance, and generally concentrates on the detection of no more than a single disease. In order to bridge the gap, Enhanced Diabetic Retinopathy Detection through Multimodal Integration of Fundus Imaging Features and Clinical Demographic Information utilizing Verifia

Multimodal Fusion of Endoscopic and Histopathological Images for Lesion Detection Using Hybrid Deep Learning.

INTRODUCTION: The classification of endoscopic lesions and the early diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders rely heavily on precise lesion identification. However, subtle lesion appearances and considerable interobserver variability among clinicians often hinder accurate diagnosis. These challenges emphasize the need for robust, automated diagnostic systems that can integrate diverse image features to improve diagnostic accuracy and reliability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address these limitations, a novel deep learning framework, the Spatio-Histological Fusion Network (SHF-Net), was dev
