Multi-country assessment of residual bio-efficacy of insecticides used for indoor residual spraying in malaria control on different surface types: results from program monitoring in 17 PMI/USAID-supported IRS countries.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is the application of insecticide to the interior walls of household structures that often serve as resting sites for mosquito vectors of malaria. Human exposure to malaria vectors is reduced when IRS involves proper application of pre-determined concentrations of the active ingredient specific to the insecticide formulation of choice. The impact of IRS can be affected by the dosage of insecticide, spray coverage, vector behavior, vector susceptibility to insecticides, and the residual efficacy of the insecticide applied. This report compiles data on …

Roles of SfHSP70-7 in Thermal Tolerance, Insecticide Adaptability, and Reproductive Performance Under Combined Environmental Stress of the Rice Pest Sogatella furcifera (Hemiptera: Delphacidae).

Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) regulates the stress tolerance and reproductive ability of insects. In this study, the SfHSP70-7 gene was clon … dant in the gut and ovaries. Its expression was strongly induced by high/low temperatures and three insecticides (triflumezopyrim, sulfoxaflor, and imidacloprid), with the maximum induction under heat and triflumezopyrim stress. RNA interference (RNAi) efficiently silenced SfHSP70-7 and significantly increased the susceptibility of S. furcifera to triflumezopy …

Sea Medick Volatile Oil: Antioxidant, Insecticidal, In Vitro Cytotoxic Activity on SAF-1 Cells and Anti-Lipoxygenase Assessment via In Vitro and In Silico Methods.

The Mediterranean plant Medicago marina L., native to North Africa, Spain, and Central Asia, is instrumental in the stabilization of coastal dunes and holds considerable economic significance. In addition to the plant's insecticidal potential against Tribolium castaneum, anti-lipoxygenase activity, and cytotoxic activity against SAF-1 cell lines, this study evaluated the antioxidant capacity of the essential oil, whose chemical composition was previously published in our paper. The observed antioxidant effect may be related to the reducing capacity and the strong electron donating properties o

Restricted insecticide application: a last mile control option for elimination of acute sleeping sickness and progressive control of African animal trypanosomiasis in South-Eastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Animal African trypanosomiasis (AAT) poses a significant impediment to livestock production and economic progress in sub-Saharan Africa. To reduce the burden of AAT in Uganda and contribute to the AAT progressive control pathway, there is a need to develop effective AAT and tsetse control measures. In this study, we assessed a combination of chemotherapy and Restricted Insecticide Application Protocol (RAP) as a last mile control option for the progressive control of AAT and acute sleeping sickness in south- eastern Uganda. METHODS: Cattle from fourteen AAT endemic villages in sou

Phytochemical profiling, metabolomics, and molecular docking studies of Atriplex halimus aerial parts revealing potential insecticidal activity against the malaria vector Anopheles pharoensis.

Atriplex halimus is traditionally used in folk medicine for the treatment of skin infections, inflammation, and parasitic disorders. The aerial parts of A. halimus were extracted with 70% methanol and fractionated into dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butanol (BuOH), and aqueous fractions. Comprehensive UPLC/MS profiling identified seventy-eight secondary metabolites, predominantly flavonoids and their derivatives, followed by triterpenoids and minor constituents. The antimicrobial activities of the extract and its fractions were assessed against Staphylococcus aureus and Escher

Overexpression of cytochrome P450 gene CYP402C18 contributes to the detoxification of dimpropyridaz, one novel pyridazine pyrazolecarboxamide insecticide, in the whitefly Bemisia tabaci Mediterranean cryptic species.

Bemisia tabaci is a major agricultural pest, and its widespread resistance to multiple insecticides poses a significant challenge for effective control. Dimpropyridaz, a new pyridazine-pyrazolecarboxamide insecticide, demonstrates high toxicity against sap-sucking pests, including those resistant to other class insecticides. However, the mechanisms underlying B. tabaci detoxification of dimpropyridaz remain unclear. In this study, transcriptome sequencing was performed on B. tabaci adults exposed to a lethal dose of dimpropyridaz for 48 h, identifying 973 differentially expressed genes (DEGs).…

Chemical composition and insecticidal activity of the essential oil of Pseudobrickellia brasiliensis (Spreng) R. M. King & H. Rob (Asteraceae) on Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae).

In Brazil, Leishmania infantum is transmitted mainly through the bite of the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis, the main visceral leishmaniasis (VL) vector. Although the most common vector control strategy is the application of synthetic insecticides, growing resistance to these products has sparked interest in developing new alternatives. In this context, plants emerge as a viable possibility due to the diversity of secondary metabolites with insecticidal potential. This work aimed to chemically characterize the essential oil of Pseudobrickellia brasiliensis and evaluate its toxicity on L. longi…

Long-lasting insecticidal net ownership and malaria infection by socio-economic status: a cross-sectional household study in an area along Lake Victoria, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: This study focused on the importance of long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) in malaria control in a study area where socio-economic disparities are widening. The objective was to assess the effectiveness of LLIN ownership when nets were available for no more than two people, controlling for differences in socio-economic status (SES). It was hypothesized that LLIN effectiveness would differ by SES and that LLIN effectiveness should be analysed with adjustment for differences in SES. METHODS: A household level survey was conducted in an area in the Lake Victoria region in

Cost-effectiveness of intermittent preventive therapy and insecticide-treated bed nets for malaria prevention among pregnant women in Jos North, Plateau State, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health concern, particularly among pregnant women in endemic regions. Intermittent preventive therapy using sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (IPTp-SP) and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) is widely recommended for malaria prevention in pregnancy. However, the cost-effectiveness of these interventions, particularly in low-resource settings, needs further evaluation to inform policy and resource allocation. This study aimed to assess the cost-effectiveness of IPTp-SP and ITNs as malaria prevention strategies among pregnant women attending antenatal care (ANC) s

Bayesian hierarchical spatial ecological model assessing the nexus of vegetation index, insecticide-treated bed-nets and livestock cattle density on lymphatic filariasis transmission.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) remains endemic in Nigeria, exhibiting pronounced spatial heterogeneity. This study employed Bayesian spatio-temporal modelling with a beta-binomial likelihood and a modified Besag-York-Mollie (BYM) random effect on national data from 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2021. It assessed ecological and intervention drivers of LF transmission. Results identified persistent high-risk clusters (RR > 2.25) in northern (Zamfara, Kano, Plateau) and southeastern states (Ebonyi, Enugu), which correlated with high prevalence (10.95-21.84%). Notably, insecticide-treated net (ITN) coverage sh

Risk factors for malaria infection prevalence and household vector density between mass distribution campaigns of long-lasting insecticidal nets in North-western Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the most widely deployed vector control intervention in sub-Saharan Africa to prevent malaria. Recent reports indicate selection of pyrethroid insecticide resistance is widespread in mosquito vectors. This paper explores risk factors associated with malaria infection prevalence and vector density between mass distribution campaigns, changes in net coverage, and loss of protection in an area of high pyrethroid resistance in Northwest Tanzania. METHODS: A cross sectional malaria survey of 3456 children was undertaken in 2014 in Muleba distr

Quercetin Attenuates the Oxidative Injury-Mediated Upregulation of Apoptotic Gene Expression and Catecholaminergic Neurotransmitters of the Fetal Rats' Brain Following Prenatal Exposure to Fenitrothion Insecticide.

The association between gestational exposure to organophosphate and neurodevelopmental deficits is an area of particular interest, since the developing brain is sensitively susceptible to this neurotoxic pesticide. Instead, the neuroprotective role of quercetin has been suggested, but its exact protective mechanism against the developmental neurotoxicity of organophosphate did not previously notify. In this study, we have evaluated the anti-apoptotic role of quercetin against the developmental neurotoxicity of fenitrothion. Forty timed pregnant rats (from the 5th to the 19th day) were divided

Impacts of residual insecticide spraying on the abundance and habitat occupancy of Triatoma sordida and co-occurrence with Triatoma infestans: A three-year follow-up in northeastern Argentina.

Triatoma infestans, the main vector in the Gran Chaco region, may competitively displace other sympatric species such as Triatoma sordida. We conducted a three-year longitudinal study of site- and house-level infestation and abundance of triatomine bugs before and after an area-wide insecticide spraying campaign followed by sustained vector surveillance in a well-defined rural section of the Argentine Chaco encompassing 368-411 houses. Here, we tested whether insecticide applications targeting and virtually suppressing T. infestans reduced the abundance of T. sordida and modified its habitat o

Using β-cyclodextrin/attapulgite-immobilized ionic liquid as sorbent in dispersive solid-phase microextraction to detect the benzoylurea insecticide contents of honey and tea beverages.

A green, simple, inexpensive dispersive solid-phase microextraction method coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography was developed for rapid screening and selective recognition of benzoylurea insecticides (BUs) in honey and tea beverages. A novel adsorbent, ionic liquid (IL)-modified β-cyclodextrin/attapulgite (β-CD/ATP), was prepared by immobilizing IL on the surface of β-CD/ATP. A series of demanding extraction conditions were investigated through the experimental design. Under optimum conditions, the limits of detection for the analytes varied from 0.12 to 0.21 μg L(-1). The enric…
