The remaining risk factors analysed, including late delivery (> 36+3 weeks) were not associated with length-of-stay, ventilatory support, digestive autonomy, complications or mortality.
CONCLUSIONS: Neither the presence of ultrasonograph …

AIM: After repair of oesophageal atresia (OA), the need for endoscopic follow-up (EFU) remains unclear. To end this, we assessed the trends of oesophageal mucosal changes in successive follow-up biopsies.
METHODS: EFU records of 264 patients including histological grades of oesophagitis (from 0 to III), gastric (GM) or intestinal (IM) metaplasia and dysplasia (mild to severe) at 1, 3, 5 10, 15, and >15 years after repair of OA were reviewed.
RESULTS: Included were 209 patients with 616 biopsies. A total of 60 patients had undergone antireflux surgery and 24 had long-gap OA (LG). Median follo

BACKGROUND: Children with major anatomical congenital anomalies (CA) often need prolonged hospitalization with surgical interventions in the neonatal period and thereafter. Better intensive care treatment has reduced mortality rates, but at the cost of more morbidity.
AIM: To study motor-function and exercise capacity in five-year-old children born with CA, and to determine whether motor-function and exercise capacity differ according to primary diagnosis.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study.
SUBJECTS: One-hundred-and-two children with the following CA: congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) n=2

PURPOSE: To present special methodical and clinical findings of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPSS) in children and to discuss potential indications.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 1993 and 1996, 6 children aged 2-13 years were treated by TIPSS-insertion. In four cases, the underlying disease was extrahepatic biliary atresia (EHBA) and in two cases liver fibrosis secondary to treatment of neoplasms during early childhood. Indications for TIPSS insertion were variceal bleeding resistant to other treatment modalities in three patients, hypersplenism in one patient and both ble

Therapy for patients with biliary atresia (BA) has become controversial, with orthotopic liver transplantation (OLTx) suggested in place of portoenterostomy. This is based on the unpredictable success of portoenterostomy, and the increased difficulty of the OLTx procedure following prior extensive liver surgery. The survival rate reported here for infants transplanted after unsuccessful portoenterostomy does not support this approach. OLTx was undertaken in 37 patients when end-stage liver failure followed primary portoenterostomy. Recipient age ranged from 6 months to 14 years (median, 13 mon

Mitchell-Riley syndrome/Martinez-Frias syndrome (MRS/MFS) is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder with multisystem involvement and poor prognosis. Most reported cases have been associated with homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in the RFX6 gene, a transcriptional regulatory factor for pancreatic morphogenesis. Given the limited number of reported cases, the syndrome may be under-recognized. When the particular phenotype of MFS includes a mutation on the RFX6 gene and neonatal diabetes, it has been called Mitchell-Riley syndrome. Because of this, we propose that MFS/MRS is a symptom

Anorectal malformations are common worldwide. Several classifications were used to describe the different types, but in spite of this, there are rare variants. This report describes 2 unusual cases of congenital pouch colon and anorectal malformations.

OBJECTIVE: We report a single-centered, Phase I pilot trial, testing the enteral administration of an experimental amniotic fluid-like solution to 10 neonates who were otherwise "NPO" following surgery for congenital bowel abnormalities. The overall hypothesis was that the trophic effect of the solution on intestinal villi would facilitate advancement to full enteral feedings. The specific hypothesis tested in this pilot trial was that the solution would be tolerated.
STUDY DESIGN: Ten neonates who were NPO following surgery for congenital bowel abnormalities, were studied before any "trophic

In vue of the successes of modern surgery, correct roentgenology in acute abdominal conditions of the infant and child is of utmost importance. History is very incomplete in children so that the most crucial question is when and how should X-ray investigation start? The answer is difficult to provide because of the necessity of early surgery which, in addition can be hindered by an unnecessary roentgenography. Often this cannot be repeated because of worsening in the patient's condition. Knowledge of specific pathology and of congenital malformations is necessary. One must be careful in using

Paediatric surgery is a young specialty whose rapid growth in the United Kingdom has largely been as a result of the development of neonatal surgery in the past 20 years. A decreasing birth rate, and pre-natal diagnosis of some major congenital anormalies with the possibility of termination of pregnancy, are likely to prevent further increases to neonatal surgical units. Expansion of case material is likely to come from earlier attacks on congenital heart disease, and improvement in results is more likely to come from improved respiratory management than from the development of new surgical te

A follow-up study of 27 children operated for congenital duodenal obstruction (CDO) in the years 1953--71 is presented. Nine children belonged to the intrinsic and 18 children to the extrinsic group of CDO. A total of 7 retrocolic, isoperistaltic, side-to-side duodeno-jejunostomy, 7 Ladd's operation, 8 duodenolysis, 2 reduction of midgut volvulus, 2 duodenostomy a.m. Morton and one gastro-jejunostomy were performed at the age of 1 day--15 years. The clinical and radiological examinations were performed 3--21 years (mean 10 years 2 months) after these operations. In 3 cases there was a moderate

Recent advances in culturing of intestinal stem cells and pluripotent stem cells have led to the development of intestinal organoids. These are self-organizing 3D structures, which recapitulate the characteristics and physiological features of in vivo intestinal epithelium. Intestinal organoids have allowed the development of novel in vitro models to study various gastrointestinal diseases expanding our understanding of the pathophysiology of diseases and leading to the development of innovative therapies. This article aims to summarize the current usage of intestinal organoids as a model of g

BACKGROUND: Right ventricle (RV) decompression for pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum (PA/IVS) could be achieved surgically or percutaneously, yet transcatheter valvotomy is not widely accessible in remote regions and classic on-pump pulmonary valvotomy procedure carries risks of by pass in neonatal patients. We aim to summarize our 15-year’s surgical experience treating PA/IVS with on-pump valvulotomy, off-pump valvulotomy and hybrid techniques. METHODS: From January 2010 to March 2025, 104 PA/IVS children who underwent off-pump, on-pump pulmonary valvulotomy or hybrid therapy i
