Investigation of the protective effects of horse mushroom (Agaricus arvensis Schaeff.) against carbon tetrachloride-induced oxidative stress in rats.

Wild and cultured mushrooms have been extensively used for food and medicinal purposes all around the world. However, there is limited information on chemical composition, health enhancing effects and contributions on diet of some mushrooms (e.g., Agaricus arvensis) widely distributed in many countries including United Kingdom, Australia, Turkey etc. Therefore, the present study was aimed to analyse the bioactive composition and ameliorative effects of A. arvensis via evaluating in vitro and in vivo antioxidant properties in CCl4 induced rat model. The extract exhibited higher antioxidant capa

The omega-3 fatty acid nutritional landscape: health benefits and sources.

Dietary fatty acids (FA) are increasingly recognized as major biologic regulators and have properties that relate to health outcomes and disease. The longer chain, more bioactive (n-6) (or omega-6) FA and (n-3) (or omega-3) FA share similar elongation and desaturation enzymes in their conversion from the essential (n-6) FA, linoleic acid, and (n-3) FA, α-linolenic acid (ALA). Conversion from these essential FA is very inefficient. However, now for the (n-3) FA series, soy oil can be enriched with (n-3) stearidonic acid (SDA) to allow for much more efficient conversion to longer chain EPA. EPA

[Cyclooxygenase and prostanoids--biological implications].

Arachidonic acid is the main precursor of eikosanoids, which regulate the function of various organs and systems. It is released from cellular membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2 or indirectly by phospholipases C and D. Prostaglandins, prostacyclin (PGI2), and thromboxane A2 (TAX2) are synthesized from arachidonic acid on a metabolic pathway dependent on prostaglandin H2 synthase activity, also known as cyclooxygenase (COX). Of the 12 prostaglandins, the most potent are PGD2, PGE2, and PGF2. The others are synthesized in a primary step of arachidonic acid transformation (PGG2, PGH2), by

[Effect of phospholipase A2 on H+-ATPase in the plasma membrane of H+-ATPase in maize root cells].

The plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase which plays a central role in plant cell physiology is lipid-dependent enzyme. Lipid composition of plasma membrane can be modified by the action of endogenous phospholipases. Recently it has been supposed that the plasma membrane phospholipase A2 participates in phytohormonal signal transduction on the H(+)-ATPase protein. We have investigated the effect of phospholipase A2 on the H+ ATPase activity in plasma membrane preparations isolated from 7-days corn seedling roots. The exogenous phospholipase A2 from snake venom and lipid hydrolysis products of the phosp

Protective role of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α agonists in skin barrier and inflammation.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) is one of the three isoforms of PPARs, which are ligand-activated nuclear transcription factors. PPARα is highly expressed in liver and its agonists are widely used to treat hyperlipidemia. Epidermal keratinocytes express all three isoforms (α, β/δ, and γ) of PPARs and PPARα is particularly important for regulating the epidermal barrier and inflammation. Agonistic ligation of PPARα protects the epidermal barrier function and inhibits the inflammatory response in dermatitis. In this review, we summarize recent topics on the role of PPARα in s

Hsp70 May Be a Molecular Regulator of Schistosome Host Invasion.

Schistosomiasis is a debilitating disease that affects over 240 million people worldwide and is considered the most important neglected tropical disease following malaria. Free-swimming freshwater cercariae, one of the six morphologically distinct schistosome life stages, infect humans by directly penetrating through the skin. Cercariae identify and seek the host by sensing chemicals released from human skin. When they reach the host, they burrow into the skin with the help of proteases and other contents released from their acetabular glands and transform into schistosomula, the subsequent la

Alterations in striatal oxidative stress level produced by pharmacological manipulation of dopamine as shown by a novel synthetic marker molecule.

Oxidative stress (OS) is thought to participate in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, but the contribution of dopamine metabolism and auto-oxidation to OS in Parkinson's and other diseases is not clear. Oxidative stress in rat striatum was measured by microdialysis using a novel synthetic compound composed of tyrosine and linoleic acid (LT), and determination of the oxidation products LT-OOH and LT-epoxy by HPLC-MS. Since LT is non-diffusible through the microdialysis membrane, the oxidized products formed in microdialyzate reflect oxidation state in the extracellular comp

Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Cotoneaster lacteus: Experimental Characterization and Mechanistic Insights from Biological Assays, DFT and Molecular Docking Studies.

In this study, silver nanoparticles were green synthesized using Cotoneaster lacteus and characterized for the first time in a comprehensive way. The phytochemical composition of the extract was analyzed by GC-MS/MS and LC-ESI-MS/MS, and the main constituents were identified as linoleic acid (63.56%) and trans-ferulic acid (55.94 ng/mL). The C. lacteus extract-based AgNPs were characterized using UV-Vis, FT-IR, XRD, SEM-EDX, STEM, and zeta potential analyses. XRD results showed a face-centered cubic crystal structure with an average crystallite size of 25.42 nm, while STEM images indicated pre

Mesenteric denervation ameliorates post‑infarction heart failure alongside alterations in the gut-nerve-microbiota axis.

Sympathetic overactivity and gut microbiota dysbiosis drive chronic heart failure (CHF) progression. This study explored the associations of mesenteric denervation (MDN) with cardioprotection and potential involvement of the nerve-microbiota-heart axis in MI-induced CHF mice. C57BL/6 mice were randomized into control, CHF, and CHF_MDN groups. CHF was induced by LAD ligation, and MDN was performed via phenol ablation of the superior mesenteric artery. MDN was associated with suppressed mesenteric sympathetic activity, improved left ventricular ejection fraction, and reduced myocardial fibrosis

Changes in the nutritive quality, fatty acid and terpenoid profile of milk and "Plaisentif" cheese from nine Italian Alpine dairy farms during two grazing seasons.

Traditional food products have been gaining importance over the last few years. The interest in such products is linked to the consumers' awareness of the importance of local cultures and low-processed food and of the environmental impact of food production systems. These products have been identified by the European Community as a way of preserving tradition and different cultures and as a way of enhancing local economies. Indeed, specific regulations have been set up for these reasons. Plaisentif is a traditional cheese that is produced in two valleys, named the Chisone and Susa valleys (Nor

Quantitative lipidomics profiling of skin surface lipids and skin barrier function evaluation in patients with acne vulgaris.

Sebum composition may be more important than amount for acne lesions, and current research on skin surface lipids (SSLs) focuses on determining their relative content. The objective of this study was to analyze the changes in the absolute content of SSLs in acne patients and their relationship with skin barrier function. To evaluate skin barrier function, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin moisture, sebum content, skin elasticity, and whiteness were measured, while SSL changes were investigated using LC-MS/MS. The results indicated that adult acne patients have reduced skin barrier functio

Deletion of the WD40 domain of ATG16L1 exacerbates acute pancreatitis, abolishes LAP-like non-canonical autophagy and slows trypsin degradation.

The WD40 domain (WDD) of ATG16L1 plays a pivotal role in non-canonical autophagy. This study examined the role of recently identified LAP-like non-canonical autophagy (LNCA) in acute pancreatitis. LNCA involves rapid single-membrane LC3 conjugation to endocytic vacuoles in pancreatic acinar cells. The rationale for this study was the previously observed presence of trypsin in the organelles undergoing LNCA; aberrant trypsin formation is an important factor in pancreatitis development. Here we report that the deletion of WDD (attained in ATG16L1[E230] mice) eliminated LNCA, aggravated caerulein

Glycerophospholipids in Red Blood Cells Are Associated with Aerobic Performance in Young Swimmers.

This study aimed to characterize the composition of lipids in the red blood cells (RBCs) of adolescent swimmers and correlate this lipidome with the aerobic performance of the athletes. Five experimental assessments were performed by 37 adolescent swimmers. During the first session, the athletes went to the laboratory facility for venous blood sampling. The critical velocity protocol was conducted over the 4 subsequent days to measure aerobic performance (CV), comprising maximal efforts over distances of 100, 200, 400, and 800 m in a swimming pool. RBCs were obtained and extracted for analysis

Seaweed Sargassum wightii mediated preparation of TiO2 nanoparticles, larvicidal activity against malaria and filariasis vectors, and its effect on non-target organisms.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Malaria and Lymphatic filariasis are considered significant public health concerns in several countries. As a researcher, controlling those mosquitos using safe and eco-friendly insecticides is essential. Thus, we aimed to explore the potential use of seaweed Sargassum wightii for the biosynthesis of TiO2 NPs and evaluate its efficiency in controlling disease-transmitting mosquito larvae (using Anopheles subpictus and Culex quinquefasciatus larvae as model systems (in vivo)) as well as its potential effect on non-target organisms (using Poecilia reticulata fish as an experimental model). Metabolomes of Lewis lung carcinoma metastases and normal lung tissue from mice fed different diets.

Metastasis is a devastating aspect of cancer. This study tested the hypothesis that metabolome of metastases differs from that of host organs by using the spontaneous metastasis model of Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC). In a 2 × 2 design, male C57BL/6 mice with or without a subcutaneous LLC inoculation were fed the standard AIN93G diet or a high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks. Lung metastases from injected mice and the lungs from non-injected mice were harvested at the end of study for untargeted metabolomics of primary metabolism by using gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Nicotinic acid suppresses sebaceous lipogenesis of human sebocytes via activating hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCA2 ).

Nicotinic acid (NA) activates hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCA2 ), and it is widely used in treating dyslipidaemias. Since its side effects include skin dryness, whereas its deficiency can be accompanied by dyssebacia, characterized by sebaceous gland enlargement, we asked if HCA2 is expressed on human sebocytes, and if NA influences sebocyte functions. By using human immortalized SZ95 sebocytes, we found that non-cytotoxic (≤100 μmol/L; MTT-assay) concentrations of NA had no effect on the homeostatic sebaceous lipogenesis (SLG; Nile Red), but normalized excessive, acne-mimicking SLG ind

Dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids enhance hormone ablation therapy in androgen-dependent prostate cancer.

Hormone ablation therapy typically causes regression of prostate cancer and represents an important means of treating this disease, particularly after metastasis. However, hormone therapy inevitably loses its effectiveness as tumors become androgen-independent, and this conversion often leads to death because of subsequent poor responses to other forms of treatment. Because environmental factors, such as diet, have been strongly linked to prostate cancer, we examined the affects of dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs; at 1.5 wt%) on growth of androgen-dependent (CWR22) and androgen-inde

Intestinal adaptation occurs independently of parenteral long-chain triacylglycerol and with no change in intestinal eicosanoids after mid-small bowel resection in rats.

The role of enteral or parenteral long-chain triacylglycerol (LCT) in the complex process of intestinal adaptation is poorly defined and may involve alterations in eicosanoid synthesis. Our objective was to determine whether provision of parenteral LCT stimulates eicosanoid synthesis and resection-induced intestinal adaptation. We assessed small bowel structural adaptation, the fatty acid profiles of liver, plasma and jejunal mucosa, and the profile of 11 eicosanoids derived from (n-6) PUFA of the jejunal mucosa in rats maintained with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) with 0 or 32% of nonprote
