Disorders of Calcium and Magnesium.

This review will discuss the importance and homeostasis of calcium and magnesium in the human body, as well as the implications and treatment of disordered calcium and magnesium. With calcium and magnesium often considered to be the "forgotten cations" in medicine, it is our hope that this review will lead providers to evaluate for and effectively manage these electrolyte disorders in the emergency department.

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypocalcemia: a rare cause of infantile seizures.

Magnesium is one of the most abundant electrolytes in the human body but is often forgotten when it comes to the evaluation of an infant presenting with hypocalcemia. Its deficiency can present as neurological, cardiac and skeletal symptoms. Familial hypomagnesemia with secondary hypocalcemia is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by a transient receptor potential melastatin 6 gene pathogenic variant (TRMP6). The underlying defect lies in the intestinal absorption of magnesium. A delay in diagnosis and lack of timely initiation of treatment can lead to long term irreversible neur

[Magnesium: a kardio-renal viewpoint].

Disturbances in magnesium homeostasis are frequent clinical conditions, particularly the prevalence of hypomagnesaemia is high. However, it remains an open question which laboratory method is optimal to assess the magnesium level in the body. Most frequently physicians measure total magnesium in serum. Many associative data from observational studies point towards an association between low magnesium levels and increased cardiovascular risk as well as increased mortality. Vice versa, normal-to-high magnesium levels in patients with advanced renal failure translate to a better outcome. The pres

Effectiveness of oral magnesium in a patient with ventricular tachycardia due to hypomagnesemia.

A 12-year-old girl with occasional symptoms of chest discomfort was diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia on cardiac evaluation. No evidence of organic heart disease was apparent, but a laboratory evaluation revealed hypomagnesemia. Ventricular tachycardia disappeared after treatment with 200 mg/day of oral magnesium hydroxide, and no further chest discomfort was reported. In addition to routine cardiac evaluation for arrhythmia, serum magnesium levels should be checked in patients with suspected idiopathic benign ventricular tachycardia. Treatment with oral magnesium is a physiologic therapy

[Aging and magnesium].

The aim of this article is to clarify the relationships between aging or age-related diseases and magnesium (Mg). The mutation of mitochondrial DNA can occur in both aging and Mg deficiency, resulting in peroxidation, intracellular Ca(2+) accumulation and apoptosis. The capability against peroxidation decreases in aging and Mg deficiency. DNA polymerase I, RNA polimerase and DNA helicase require Mg for their activities. Under Mg deficiency the replication, transcription and translation of DNA become erroneous. The dysfunctions of vascular endothelial cell occur in aging and Mg deficiency. In c

[Metal content in children from Katowice and Rabka. I. Magnesium in blood and hair].

The authors determined the magnesium content in the blood and hair by atomic mass absorption. The studied material included preschool children from a kindergarten situated in the center of Katowice (n = 60) and their older teenage brothers and sisters (n = 10). The control group was made up to 24 preschool children from Rabka (a health resort in the mountains). It was found that the majority (over 60%) of preschool children in Katowice had a magnesium deficit. The magnesium content in teenagers was significantly higher than in their preschool siblings. Children from Rabka had much more favorab

Magnesium and glucose homeostasis.

Magnesium is an important ion in all living cells being a cofactor of many enzymes, especially those utilising high energy phosphate bounds. The relationship between insulin and magnesium has been recently studied. In particular it has been shown that magnesium plays the role of a second messenger for insulin action; on the other hand, insulin itself has been demonstrated to be an important regulatory factor of intracellular magnesium accumulation. Conditions associated with insulin resistance, such as hypertension or aging, are also associated with low intracellular magnesium contents. In dia

Changes in concentrations of certain plasma and erythrocyte minerals associated with hypomagnesaemia in young calves.

Hypomagnesaemia was induced in young calves 1-2 weeks old by feeding them with a diet composed of skimmed milk and barley straw to which urea, potassium chloride and soya-bean oil were added. Blood samples were collected from each calf once a week from the jugular vein until there was a significantly lower (P less than 0.01) plasma magnesium (PMg) concentration in the experimental compared to the control calves receiving MgO instead of KCl. In addition to PMg, the blood samples were analysed for plasma sodium, potassium, calcium, inorganic phosphate and erythrocyte concentrations of magnesium,

Magnesium in pregnant women and the newborn.

In this article the importance of Mg for pregnant women and fetal outcome is reviewed. The physiological changes of Mg-containing body fluids and of tissues are discussed. Mg supplementation during pregnancy seems to be necessary and the efficacy on maternal health and on the newborn are reported. Serum Mg levels decrease during pregnancy and there is a 25% increase of renal Mg excretion. Mg supplementation has a positive effect, with reduced incidence of hospital admission and preterm labour, while the gestational age of the fetus is longer. Convulsions may occur in newborns with hypomagnesae

Blood mononuclear cell magnesium in normal pregnancy and preeclampsia.

Magnesium (Mg) is effective in the treatment of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). In order to determine if patients with PIH are Mg deficient, we assessed mononuclear cell magnesium content (mMg) and serum Mg concentrations (sMg) in 23 normal pregnant women and in 12 women with PIH admitted in active labor. The sMg concentration in women with PIH was 1.74 +/- 0.1 mg/dl (mean +/- SD) and was not significantly different from normal pregnant women at 1.69 +/- 0.2 mg/dl. Both groups had sMg concentrations lower than in normal, non-pregnant controls (sMg = 1.96 +/- 0.1 mg/dl, p less than 0.001)

Dietary magnesium intake influences exercise capacity and hematologic parameters in rats.

The effects of feeding varying concentrations of dietary Mg (50, 100, 200, or 400 ppm) for 22 days on exercise capacity and hematologic parameters were investigated in male rats. Five-week-old male Osborne-Mendel rats fed diets containing 50 or 100 ppm Mg developed transitory priapism and hyperemia, signs of Mg deficiency. Based on a treadmill test, these rats showed a markedly lower exercise endurance capacity (four hours) than rats fed the higher levels of dietary Mg (six hours). They also showed a mild macrocytic anemia. Consumption of a mineral water containing 85 ppm Mg prevented these si
