BACKGROUND: The anatomy of the zygomatic bone, maxilla, periorbital, and mental regions is important because important vessels and nerves pass through these regions. The zygomaticofacial nerve can be injured during facial surgeries, especially during zygomatic implant surgeries. Infraorbital and mental nerves are among the nerves blocked during local anesthesia in dentistry.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the topographic and morphometric characteristics of the zygomaticofacial, infraorbital, and mental foramina, and to determine their anatomical variations and clinical significance in order to provid

Securing the endotracheal tube is vital for airway patency, especially in oral surgeries; naso-endotracheal intubation is ideal, but improper fixation risks nasal injury or accidental extubation. This technical note unveils the trans-septal mattress suture technique as a novel approach to secure naso-endotracheal tubes, amplifying stability, reducing trauma, and elevating aesthetic outcomes in head and neck surgeries. This study was performed at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubhaneshwar, Khordha, Odisha, India, from December 2022 t

The Le Fort I osteotomy is used to reposition the maxilla to correct numerous maxillofacial and occlusal deformities. The aim of this study was to delineate perioperative complication rates associated with Le Fort I osteotomy and determine whether the number of maxillary segments or bone grafting yielded increased complication rates. Patients undergoing Le Fort I osteotomy from 2012 to 2019 were identified from the multi-institution "National Surgical Quality Improvement Program" database using Current Procedure Terminology codes. The predictor variables of interest included maxillary segmenta

This survey of expert opinion regarding the management of mandibular third molar (M3M) impaction and its clinical sequelae was circulated to all members of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (BAOMS). It was completed by 289 clinicians who reported treating 60003 patients annually. Respondents included 199 (69%) specialists and 58 (20%) primary care clinicians. Most (99%) of the clinicians treated at least one M3M with complete surgical removal (CSR) annually. Only 69% performed one or more coronectomies (COR). Advocates of coronectomy reported lower rates of inferior al

INTRODUCTION: The lingula is used for identifying the site for injection of local anesthetics and for excision of nerve in facial neuralgia. The relationship between lingula and lingual nerves may aid in risk associated with an impacted third molar. Due to its connection to nerve and vascular structures, the study of the lingula provides important information related to oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures, such as the sagittal split ramus osteotomy and the intraoral vertico-sagittal ramus osteotomy carried out to correct dento facial deformities. Intra-operative complications such as he

Panoramic radiographs (PRs) are widely used in assessing the relationship between the mandibular third molar (MM3) and the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN). The relationship of MM3 and IAN is a critical consideration in oral and maxillofacial surgery due to the risk of nerve injury that can lead to anesthesia in the lower lip or chin. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of different transfer learning models in classifying these relations into four classes after detecting and segmenting the MM3 and the IAN using a new method with the UNet model. 714 PRs from more than 500 patients, repres

The mechanism and physiology of orbital cavity remodeling after orbital fractures is not well described. This poses a challenge in the delayed operative treatment of orbital floor fractures due to variations from expected anatomy and may risk injury to critical structures during exploration as well as misguided reconstruction, causing persistent ocular dystopia. We report a case where significant orbital remodeling caused unexpected challenges to orbital floor reconstruction, highlighting the need for further research in this field. A 23-year-old previously healthy man was treated conservative

BACKGROUND: The principal transfacial routes described to approach condylar process fractures are preauricular, retromandibular, high submandibular, and their various modifications. The selection of a specific surgical approach mainly depends on the level of condylar fracture, displacement/dislocation of the proximal segment and time elapsed from the date of trauma. Not too many studies proclaim a unanimous consensus on "gold standard" approaches for particular levels of fracture.
AIM: This study was conducted with the aim to lay down guidelines for determining the ideal surgical approach for

Resection of oral and maxillofacial tumors is often accompanied by the inferior alveolar nerve neurectomy, resulting in abnormal sensation in lower lip. It is generally believed that spontaneous sensory recovery in this nerve injury is difficult. However, during our follow-up, patients with inferior alveolar nerve sacrifice showed different degrees of lower lip sensory recovery. In this study, a prospective cohort study was conducted to demonstrate this phenomenon and analyze the factors influencing sensory recovery. A mental nerve transection model of Thy1-YFP mice and tissue clearing techniq

Since 2018, we have been using a 3D printer to fabricate a proprietary device for fixing nasotracheal tubes. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the impact of this nasotracheal intubation (NTI) fixation device. It has been used in 335 patients undergoing general anesthesia for oral and maxillofacial surgeries. No necrosis or permanent tissue damage was observed, and none of the patients developed complications requiring treatment. No unintentional tube-related incidents such as extubation, dislocation of the tube, or disconnection between the tube and the artificial respirat

PURPOSE: We propose a new method to analyze the feasibility of calculating proptosis on the basis of simple Pythagorean theorem.
METHOD: This is a non-inferiority trial, and the registration number is ChiCTR1900026490. The absolute value of proptosis of two eyes of patients without eye injury or diseases visiting our clinic from December 2017 to June 2019 was measured by computed tomography, Hertel exophthalmometer, and by simple Pythagorean theorem. With the application of MedCalc software version 19.0.4, the differences between these methods in two eyes were showed by Bland and Altman plot.

PURPOSE: Nasal bone fracture is a common maxillofacial injury, which is usually managed under local anesthesia because it is fast and effective but painful. We designed this study to see if pre-emptive analgesia with acetaminophen can reduce the pain associated with nasal bone reduction under local anesthesia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a triple-blind, randomized clinical trial. Our sample was patients with nose fracture (eligible for closed reduction) who presented to our nasal fracture clinic and they were divided into 2 arms. Medication was randomly delivered via packages, and the surg

BACKGROUND: There have been many reports about venous flaps, which are often used for the reconstruction of soft tissue defects after finger injury because such flaps are simple to elevate. Recently, high viability rates and nearly normal histological findings were reported for venous flaps, although the mechanism of flap survival remains unclear. This study investigated the esthetic outcomes after the reconstruction of volar finger defects with free medialis pedis venous flaps, which are venous flaps that elevated between the submalleolar and medial plantar regions.
