Coloproctectomy is a visceral surgical intervention where the complete colon and rectum are removed up to the level of the pelvic floor or pectinate line and the anal canal. As a rule the anal canal and pelvic floor musculature including the anal sphincter muscle remain intact. The ileoanal J-pouch construction has become established as treatment of choice for reconstruction of the small intestine. This article presents the approach for open coloproctectomy with ileoanal J-pouch reconstruction by means of an operation video which is available on-line.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a rare inherited disease that affects many organs and tissues, which explains the diversity of its clinical manifestations. This disease is often diagnosed at an early age when cutaneous angiofibromas, epilepsy and mental retardation are associated. The hepatic involvement in this phakomatosis is an uncommon location. In this context, we report the case of a tuberous sclerosis revealed in adulthood by abdominal pain and distension related to renal and hepatic angiomyolipomas associated with typical skin lesions.

Encapsulated papillary carcinoma (EPC) and solid papillary carcinoma (SPC) are distinctive variants of intraductal papillary carcinomas, each accounting for <1% of breast carcinomas. Primary multiple pleomorphic adenomas in a unilateral parotid gland in previously untreated patients is a rare finding, and little is known about the etiology and pathogenesis. Myelolipoma is an uncommon lesion composed of mature fat and hematopoietic cells. Extra-adrenal myelolipoma is rare. We report an unusual case of concurrent myelolipoma in a steroid cell tumor in a 21-year-old woman with virilization. She had a 6-year secondary amenorrhea history. We report an exceptional case of umbilical basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in a 21-year-old man, whose correct diagnosis was suggested by dermoscopy during initial complete body mole mapping. Although BCC is a common skin tumor, only 7 cases of BCC arising within the umbilicus have been reported previously. To the best of our knowledge, our patient is unique because of his age, being the youngest case of umbilical BCC described in the literature. A 45 year old man presented with a swelling on the right side of his face of 12 months duration. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans revealed he did in fact have two discrete tumours of his right parotid gland. Following a superficial parotidectomy and dissection of the deep lobe, histopathology revealed both tumours to be pleomorphic adenomas. We discuss the clinicopathological findings and implications in contemporary surgical management of parotid neoplasms.
