Cerebral cortical neural networks associated with eyelid movement play a critical role in facial animation, contribute to the regulation of blink frequency, and help prevent ocular injury. Eyelid closure depends, in part, on motoneurons that innervate the orbicularis oculi (OO) muscles. In this study, OO motoneuron cortical afferents were identified in rhesus monkeys with rabies virus, a retrograde transneuronal tracer. Virus was injected into the right OO muscle and immunohistochemically localized after 4-6 day transport intervals. Labeled motoneurons were limited to dorsal portions of the ip

One traditional and long-held view of medial temporal lobe (MTL) function is that it contains a system of structures that are exclusively involved in memory, and that the extent of memory loss following MTL damage is simply related to the amount of MTL damage sustained. Indeed, human patients with extensive MTL damage are typically profoundly amnesic whereas patients with less extensive brain lesions centred upon the hippocampus typically exhibit only moderately severe anterograde amnesia. Accordingly, the latter observations have elevated the hippocampus to a particularly prominent position w

Comparative analysis of neuron activity in the monkey putamen during multistep behavior showed that putamen neurons are active during all the animal's behavioral actions. The difference between the number of active neurons at a given step of the behavior as compared with the preceding step was found to be significantly smaller than the number of neurons reorganizing their activity at this step. Reorganization of neuron activity in the putamen is regarded as a reflection of the efferent code controlling the behavior, while the extent of reorganization is regarded as a measure of the change in t

We investigated the anatomical correlates of chronic unilateral neglect in right brain damaged patients with no visual field defects. Independently from basal ganglia or thalamus involvement, neglect patients had a subcortical area of maximal lesion overlap (maxov) in the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF). Neglect patients without lesion of subcortical nuclei had an additional maxov area in the rostralmost limit of the supramarginal gyrus (SmG). Patients without neglect showed a maxov area in the corticospinal tract with no involvement of the SLF or SmG. These findings call attention to t

The claustrum and the endopiriform nucleus contribute to the spread of epileptiform activity from the amygdala to other brain areas. Data of the distribution of pathways underlying the information flow between these regions are, however, incomplete and controversial. To investigate the projections from the amygdala to the claustrum and the endopiriform nucleus, we injected the anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into various divisions of the amygdaloid complex, including the lateral, basal, accessory basal, central, anterior cortical and posterior cortical nuclei, the periamy

The representation of the oral structures in the lateralmost part of the postcentral somatosensory cortex in conscious macaque monkeys was studied by recording the activities of single neurons. A total of 104 penetrations were made in the oral regions of six hemispheres in four animals and 2,292 neurons were isolated. The characteristics of the receptive fields (RF) of 1,598 neurons were identified. Of them, 513 neurons (area 3b, 196; area 1, 104; area 2, 213) along 44 penetrations responded to mechanical stimulation of the tongue (tongue neurons). The relative incidence of tongue neurons that

The development of the central nervous system can be divided into a number of phases, each of which is characterized by particular developmental disorders. In recent years, much progress has been made in elucidating the mechanisms by which the forebrain develops and in our understanding of major developmental disorders such as holoprosencephaly and neuronal migration disorders. In this general introduction to this symposium the major stages in the development of the forebrain, its regionalization and the genes involved, and some of the developmental disorders derailing cortical development wit

A patient is described who presented with myoclonus of the first dorsal interosseus muscle of the right foot. This myoclonus occurred 18 months after trauma of the cutaneous branch of the deep peroneal nerve on the dorsal aspect of the foot. Tactile stimulation in the dermatome of this nerve, or an anaesthetic block of the deep peroneal nerve stopped the myoclonus. The different innervation between the efferent motor activity responsible for the movements and the sensory afference suppressing it points firmly towards involvement of central connections. However, abolition of the movement by ana

We critically review the literature on subcortical aphasia, suggest that a number of traditional concepts regarding mechanisms of aphasia are inconsistent with now abundant data, and propose several new hypotheses. The absence of aphasia in 17 reported cases of dominant hemisphere striatocapsular infarction and the finding of nearly every conceivable pattern of language impairment in 33 different reported cases of striatocapsular infarction provide strong evidence against a major direct role of the basal ganglia in language and against disconnection or diaschisis as mechanisms of nonthalamic s

In the normal adult human brain, there are quantitative relationships between a surface area measure of the grey matter and the volume of hemispheric grey matter, the volume of the hemispheric subcortical matter and the cross-sectional area of the corpus callosum as revealed by analysis of high resolution MRI data. These relationships reflect structural order in, and biological features of, normal human cerebral hemispheres. Cerebral dysgenesis (CD) is associated with disruption of the normal organization of the hemispheres to a greater or lesser extent and is often manifest as refractory epil

It is apparent that evolving concepts of the regulatory basis for functions in the pelvis must take into account the role exerted by nitric oxide. A recently characterized messenger molecule, nitric oxide has been associated with numerous physiologic processes. Intense investigations of this molecule have extended its importance to several genitourinary functions. Penile erection, micturition, peristalsis of the male excurrent duct system, contractile properties of the prostate, and lumbosacral spinal cord neurotransmission are all functions that may transpire under some degree of control by n

INTRODUCTION: A male patient with an atriofascicular pathway underwent catheter ablation of the atriofascicular pathway during atrial fibrillation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The patient had preexcited atrial fibrillation both clinically and repeatedly during electrophysiologic study. A preexcited tachycardia with a 1:1 AV relationship and regular RR intervals was also induced. Catheter ablation of the atriofascicular pathway could only be performed during persistent atrial fibrillation, based on mapping of the pathway's insertion into the right bundle branch. Following successful ablation and card

The first detailed comparisons of the organization and development of craniate head structure occurred during the period 1870-1940. Most workers concluded that craniate heads were segmented, but there was no consensus regarding the nature or number of units forming head segmentation. Although a number of views are reflected in the literature, Goodrich's model has dominated subsequent discussions. Goodrich's model assumes that the head of the earliest gnathostomes consisted of 8 segments, and that each head segment, except for the premandibular segment, consisted of epimeric and hypomeric muscl

"Rubral" tremor is a rare movement disorder that occurs typically with midbrain damage. It is defined by its presence at rest, with sustained posture, and with movement. Whether it is a single-tremor disorder or a combination of two distinct tremors is debated. This report chronicles a severe neuroleptic induced "rubral" tremor in a patient who had had a stable posttraumatic ataxia. The dramatic response to benztropine and bromocriptine is illustrated in the videotape.

We describe a patient with a dissociated vertical nystagmus and an internuclear ophthalmoplegia. The vertical nystagmus consisted of a left downward nystagmus with a synchronous right intorting nystagmus when the patient looked down and to the left. This rare type of nystagmus has been described both in isolation and in association with an internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Previous authors postulated a lesion in the midbrain in the region of the medial longitudinal fasciculus. In our patient, a discrete midbrain infarction was demonstrated on magnetic resonance imaging in the hypothesized location

Correlation between respiratory movement and neural discharges of antidromically identified 20 crossed spinocerebellar tract (SCT) neurones in the T8-11 segments was examined in the anaesthetized, paralysed cat. Activity of 11 neurones of them was related to phrenic nerve activity; 7 neurones increased and 4 decreased their activity during the active phase of the phrenic nerve. Their rhythmic activity remained even after artificial ventilation was turned off, indicating the central genesis of their rhythmic activity. By comparing discharge patterns with the ventilator on and off, it is suggest

In a systematic attempt to trace all projections from the brainstem and diencephalon to the pontine nuclei of the cat, implantations and injections of horseradish peroxidase-wheat germ agglutinin (HRP-WGA) or Fluoro-Gold were placed in the pontine nuclei of 21 cats. In most of the cases there was no evidence of spread of tracer outside the pontine nuclei. Retrogradely labeled cells in the brainstem and diencephalon were carefully mapped and counted. The number labeled cells in the brainstem and diencephalon ranged from 24 in cases with very small implantations to 3,490 in cases with large inje

Neurons expressing luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), found in the septal-preoptic nuclei and hypothalamus, control the release of gonadotropic hormones from the anterior pituitary gland and facilitate reproductive behaviour. LHRH-expressing neurons are also found in the nervus terminalis, a cranial nerve that is a part of the accessory olfactory system and which projects directly from the nose to the septal-preoptic nuclei in the brain. During development, LHRH-immunoreactivity is detected in the peripheral parts of the nervus terminalis before it is found in the brain. Using a com

The localization of the Purkinje cells in the uvula and nodulus projecting to the vestibular nuclei and the prepositus hypoglossal nucleus (PH) was studied by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase in cats. Findings indicate a zonal organization in the uvula and nodulus projecting to the vestibular nuclei as follows; the Purkinje cells located in the medial half of the uvula except for the area along the posterolateral fissure project to the middle part of the inferior vestibular nucleus (IV) (middle IV zone); those in the lateral half of the uvula other than the latero

The neural mismatch theory of space motion sickness asserts that the central and peripheral autonomic sequelae of discordant sensory input arise from central integrative processes falling to reconcile patterns of incoming sensory information with existing memory. Stated differently, perceived novelty reaches a stress level as integrative mechanisms fail to return a sense of control to the individual in the new environment. Based on evidence summarized here, the severity of the neural mismatch may be dependent upon the relative amount of attention selectively afforded to each sensory input comp
