Eating pathology among Black and White smokers.

Among White smokers, many females use smoking as a weight control strategy. Little is known about the relationship between eating pathology and smoking among Black females, and whether smokers who enroll in treatment differ in eating pathology from smokers who decline treatment. We examined eating pathology among Black and White smokers who enrolled in a smoking cessation treatment and those who declined treatment. Participants were 100 Black and 100 White female smokers (ages 18-65) who completed three measures of eating pathology. After controlling for BMI, Whites reported greater levels of …

[Nasal polyps is not a homogenous pathology].

UNLABELLED: Nasal polyposis is still a disease of unknown etiology. Looking at its clinical course it seems to be not homogenous pathology. Inflammation of the mucosa, mainly eosinophilic is probably the most important factor, which leads to the development of nasal polyps. THE AIM OF STUDY: To analyze and compare the history data and eosinophilic inflammation parameters in patients with nasal polyps. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 67 patients with nasal polyposis were included into the study. They were divided into three groups: PP-primary nasal polyps (n = 33-49.2%); A-polyps and bronchial asthma w…

[Vertigo and pathology of the cerebellospinal system].

Central vertigo is most often expressed by a feeling of dizziness, non or badly systematized, but it can also appear, more seldom, like an isolated acute vertigo or associated to other neurological signs. A precise clinical exam can lead to evidence essential clinical informations (significant ataxia, neurological signs, gaze nystagmus, pursuit anomaly,...). Almost all acute lesions of central vestibular pathways, as for the peripheral ones, lead to a harmonious vestibular syndrome. The vascular lesion of the vertebro-basilar territory and multiple sclerosis are two main causes to it. The pseu

Musculoskeletal ultrasound including definitions for ultrasonographic pathology.

Ultrasound (US) has great potential as an outcome in rheumatoid arthritis trials for detecting bone erosions, synovitis, tendon disease, and enthesopathy. It has a number of distinct advantages over magnetic resonance imaging, including good patient tolerability and ability to scan multiple joints in a short period of time. However, there are scarce data regarding its validity, reproducibility, and responsiveness to change, making interpretation and comparison of studies difficult. In particular, there are limited data describing standardized scanning methodology and standardized definitions o

Pathology of bartonella endocarditis in six dogs.

In a 5-year retrospective study of dogs presenting to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis, there were 31 histologic diagnoses of valvular endocarditis. By polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of embedded valvular tissue, Bartonella organisms were exclusively associated with 6 out of 31 cases (19%). Confirmed Bartonella cases involved the aortic valve alone (five out of six) or in combination with the mitral valve (one of six). Microscopic features of Bartonella endocarditis were compared with valves from non-Bartonella endocarditis and with

Unusual pathology of colon: inclusion dermoid cyst.

Dermoid cysts are typically known to occur in the midline, near the lines of embryonic fusion, from trapped ectodermal tissue. They are very rare in the gastrointestinal tract, and only a few cases of dermoid cyst in the caecum and ileum have been reported in the literature. In our case, a dermoid cyst was found in the transverse colon, which has not been reported previously.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons. In some ALS patients, dementia or aph … have also been scattered case reports of ALS with Alzheimer's disease (AD). To determine whether AD pathology may play a role in the dementia or aphasia syndromes in ALS, we reviewed 30 cases of sporadic ALS diagnosed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Human enteric neuropathies: morphology and molecular pathology.

The aim of this study is to review current understanding of the molecular and morphological pathology of the enteric neuropathies affecting motor function of the human gastrointestinal tract and to evaluate the described pathological entities in the literature to assess whether a new nosology may be proposed. The authors used PUBMED and MEDLINE searches to explore the literature pertinent to the molecular events and pathology of gastrointestinal motility disorders including achalasia, gastroparesis, intestinal pseudo-obstruction, colonic inertia and megacolon in order to characterize the disor…

Brainstem pathology in DYT1 primary torsion dystonia.

DYT1 dystonia is a severe form of young-onset dystonia caused by a mutation in the gene that encodes for the protein torsinA, which is thought to play a role in protein transport and degradation. We describe, for the first time to our knowledge, perinuclear inclusion bodies in the midbrain reticular formation and periaqueductal gray in four clinically documented and genetically confirmed DYT1 patients but not in controls. The inclusions were located within cholinergic and other neurons in the pedunculopontine nucleus, cuneiform nucleus, and griseum centrale mesencephali and stained positively

Spontaneous cervical haematoma resulting from intrathoracic pathology.

Spontaneous cervical haematomas are rare occurrences for which a wide variety of aetiologies have been reported. Although the pathogenesis of this condition can be quite diverse, all known cases have emanated from a cervical source. The authors report the first case of a spontaneous cervical haematoma arising from an intrathoracic source. A case review and Medline search from 1962-2003 was carried out. No prior experience with intrathoracic sources for cervical haematomas has previously been reported. Transcervical haematoma evacuation confirmed the intrathoracic origin and a median sternotomy

Sonography of the knee: intra-articular pathology.

MRI is the gold-standard imaging technique for evaluation of the intra-articular structures of the knee, and the use of sonography remains controversial. Sonography nevertheless is a useful alternative in several conditions: Inflammatory joint diseases, where it is appropriate for early diagnosis and follow-up of joint effusion and synovitis; peri-articular masses, where it is the best modality for guidance of needle puncture or biopsy; suspected meniscus or ligament lesion, where it may provide a positive diagnosis but is not sufficient to exclude intra-articular lesions; and loose bodies, wh

Understanding the pathology of vascular cognitive impairment.

The prevalence, morphology and pathogenesis of vascular dementia (VaD), recently termed vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), and of mixed de … id angiopathy, appear not essential for cognitive decline in full-blown AD, while both mild AD-type pathology and small vessel disease may interact synergistically in "unmasking" or promoting dementia. AD pathology is significantly less severe in the presence of cerebrovascular lesions. Further studies are needed to validate diagnostic criteria for VCI and …

Review: pathology of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is a novel human prion disease that results from exposure to the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) agent, probably by the oral route. The pathological features of vCJD are unique, with extensive involvement of lymphoid tissues in addition to the central nervous system. This article reviews the histopathology and biochemistry of vCJD, emphasising diagnostic features and indicating several areas of active research. The widespread distribution of infectivity in lymphoid tissues in vCJD has lead to concerns over the possibility of iatrogenic disease tr…
