Activation timecourse of ventral visual stream object-recognition areas: high density electrical mapping of perceptual closure processes.

Object recognition is achieved even in circumstances when only partial information is available to the observer. Perceptual closure processes are essential in enabling such recognitions to occur. We presented successively less fragmented images while recording high-density event-related potentials (ERPs), which permitted us to monitor brain activity during the perceptual closure processes leading up to object recognition. We reveal a bilateral ERP component (N(cl)) that tracks these processes (onsets approximately 230 msec, maximal at approximately 290 msec). Scalp-current density mapping of t

Contrast visual testing in neurovisual diagnosis.

Contrast visual testing (CVT) is a psychophysical visual test of undetermined diagnostic capability in many neurovisual disorders. CVT of 32 controls and 39 patients was compared with the pattern visual evoked response (PVER) from each group. CVT was more sensitive than PVER in detecting visual dysfunction in pseudotumor cerebri and subclinical optic neuritis and showed potential in distinguishing papilledema from pseudopapilledema. PVER was more sensitive than CVT in detecting subclinical visual dysfunction in MS and optic nerve compression. Neither was abnormal in asymptomatic Leber's optic

What Is Actually Affected by the Scrambling of Objects When Localizing the Lateral Occipital Complex?

The lateral occipital complex (LOC), the cortical region critical for shape perception, is localized with fMRI by its greater BOLD activity when viewing intact objects compared with their scrambled versions (resembling texture). Despite hundreds of studies investigating LOC, what the LOC localizer accomplishes-beyond distinguishing shape from texture-has never been resolved. By independently scattering the intact parts of objects, the axis structure defining the relations between parts was no longer defined. This led to a diminished BOLD response, despite the increase in the number of independ

Identification and intensity of disgust: Distinguishing visual, linguistic and facial expressions processing in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVES & METHODS: Most of the studies since now show an impairment for facial displays of disgust recognition in Parkinson disease. A general impairment in disgust processing in patients with Parkinson disease might adversely affect their social interactions, given the relevance of this emotion for human relations. However, despite the importance of faces, disgust is also expressed through other format of visual stimuli such as sentences and visual images. The aim of our study was to explore disgust processing in a sample of patients affected by Parkinson disease, by means of various tests

The spider does not always win the fight for attention: Disengagement from threat is modulated by goal set.

Stimulus-driven preferential attention to threat can be modulated by goal-driven attention. However, it remains unclear how this goal-driven modulation affects specific attentional components implied in threat interference. We hypothesise that goal-driven modulation most strongly impacts delayed disengagement from threat. A spatial cueing task was used that disentangles delayed disengagement from attentional capture by tightly manipulating the locus of attention at the time of target onset. Different top-down goals were induced by instructing participants to identify bird/fish targets (Experim

Facial emotion recognition is inversely correlated with tremor severity in essential tremor.

We here assess limbic and orbitofrontal control in 20 patients with essential tremor (ET) and 18 age-matched healthy controls using the Ekman Facial Emotion Recognition Task and the IOWA Gambling Task. Our results show an inverse relation between facial emotion recognition and tremor severity. ET patients also showed worse performance in joy and fear recognition, as well as subtle abnormalities in risk detection, but these differences did not reach significance after correction for multiple testing.

Differential impact of ApoE ε4 on cortical activation during famous face recognition in cognitively intact individuals and patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

This study explores the neurofunctional correlates of the recognition of famous faces in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and healthy controls depending on the genetic risk factor, Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) ε4. An event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment was conducted while participants discriminated between famous and nonfamous faces. We compared the results of 32 healthy controls [17 ApoE ε4 carriers (E4+); 15 noncarriers (E4-)] with those of 30 patients with aMCI (16 E4+; 14 E4-). Despite comparable task performance, patients with aMCI, E4+ showed

Perirhinal cortex contributes to accuracy in recognition memory and perceptual discriminations.

The prevailing view of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) holds that its structures are dedicated to long-term declarative memory. Recent evidence challenges this position, suggesting that perirhinal cortex (PRc) in the MTL may also play a role in perceptual discriminations of stimuli with substantial visual feature overlap. Relevant neuropsychological findings in humans have been inconclusive, likely because studies have relied on patients with large and variable MTL lesions. Here, we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging study in healthy individuals to determine whether PRc shows a p

Disgust and happiness recognition correlate with anteroventral insula and amygdala volume respectively in preclinical Huntington's disease.

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) can show disproportionate impairments in recognizing facial signals of disgust, but the neural basis of this deficit remains unclear. Functional imaging studies have implicated the anterior insula in the ability to recognize disgust, but have identified other structures as well, including the basal ganglia. In view of variable insula and basal ganglia volume changes in HD, we used voxel-based morphometry to map regional variations in gray matter (GM) volume in participants carrying the mutation for HD, and correlated this with their performance on a test

Evidence for perceptual deficits in associative visual (prosop)agnosia: a single-case study.

Associative visual agnosia is classically defined as normal visual perception stripped of its meaning [Archiv für Psychiatrie und Nervenkrankheiten 21 (1890) 22/English translation: Cognitive Neuropsychol. 5 (1988) 155]: these patients cannot access to their stored visual memories to categorize the objects nonetheless perceived correctly. However, according to an influential theory of visual agnosia [Farah, Visual Agnosia: Disorders of Object Recognition and What They Tell Us about Normal Vision, MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 1990], visual associative agnosics necessarily present perceptual defici

Visual cognition in non-amnestic Alzheimer's disease: Relations to tau, amyloid, and cortical atrophy.

Heterogeneity within the Alzheimer's disease (AD) syndromic spectrum is typically classified in a domain-specific manner (e.g., language vs. visual cognitive function). The central aim of this study was to investigate whether impairment in visual cognitive tasks thought to be subserved by posterior cortical dysfunction in non-amnestic AD presentations is associated with tau, amyloid, or neurodegeneration in those regions using 18F-AV-1451 and 11C-PiB positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Sixteen amyloid-positive patients who met criteria for either Posterior

The role of vision in the neural representation of unique entities.

Famous places and famous people are different from their common counterparts in that we have unique knowledge about individual items, including specific knowledge about their visual appearance and other sensory properties. Previous studies have shown that the processing of unique entities selectively activates a network of brain regions that includes the bilateral anterior temporal lobes (ATL), posterior cingulate cortex and adjacent medial precuneus (PCC/medPrec), medial prefrontal cortex (medPFC), and temporal-parietal junction (TPJ). The degree to which these regions represent visual proper

Neuroanatomical Correlates of Recognizing Face Expressions in Mild Stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

Early Alzheimer's disease can involve social disinvestment, possibly as a consequence of impairment of nonverbal communication skills. This study explores whether patients with Alzheimer's disease at the mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia stage have impaired recognition of emotions in facial expressions, and describes neuroanatomical correlates of emotion processing impairment. As part of the ongoing PACO study (personality, Alzheimer's disease and behaviour), 39 patients with Alzheimer's disease at the mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia stage and 39 matched controls completed

It does not look odd to me: perceptual impairments and eye movements in amnesic patients with medial temporal lobe damage.

Studies of people with memory impairments have shown that a specific set of brain structures in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) is vital for memory function. However, whether these structures have a role outside of memory remains contentious. Recent studies of amnesic patients with damage to two structures within the MTL, the hippocampus and the perirhinal cortex, indicated that these patients also performed poorly on perceptual tasks. More specifically, they performed worse than controls when discriminating between objects, faces and scenes with overlapping features. In order to investigate wh

Decoding task-based attentional modulation during face categorization.

Attention is a neurocognitive mechanism that selects task-relevant sensory or mnemonic information to achieve current behavioral goals. Attentional modulation of cortical activity has been observed when attention is directed to specific locations, features, or objects. However, little is known about how high-level categorization task set modulates perceptual representations. In the current study, observers categorized faces by gender (male vs. female) or race (Asian vs. White). Each face was perceptually ambiguous in both dimensions, such that categorization of one dimension demanded selective

The body inversion effect is mediated by face-selective, not body-selective, mechanisms.

Evidence suggesting that the brain has specialized mechanisms for processing human bodies include the discovery of body-selective brain areas and the behavioral body inversion effect (BIE). Interestingly, the BIE (worse discrimination of inverted vs upright bodies) disappears for headless bodies, implying a critical role of the head in this effect. Previous studies have shown that the face inversion effect is mediated by the fusiform face-selective area. Given the central role that the head plays in the behavioral BIE, we asked whether it is mediated by face-selective or body-selective areas.

Deficit in negative emotional information processing in schizophrenia: does it occur in all patients?

The nature of the impairment in the processing of emotional information in schizophrenia is still being debated. Some authors reported that schizophrenia patients would show deficits in the treatment processing of negative emotional information without a negative bias, as observed in controls, when in a combined emotional situation including positive/negative information. Eighteen subjects with paranoid schizophrenia in remission with a low level of negative symptoms and 18 control subjects were exposed to 108 pairs of pictures (International Affective Picture System) depicting different emoti

Divergent patterns of social cognition performance in autism and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS).

Individuals with developmental disorders frequently report a range of social cognition deficits including difficulties identifying facial displays of emotion. This study examined the specificity of face emotion processing deficits in adolescents with either autism or 22q11DS compared to typically developing (TD) controls. Two tasks (face emotion recognition and weather scene recognition) were used to explore group differences in visual scanpath strategy and concurrent recognition accuracy. For faces, the autism and 22q11DS groups demonstrated lower emotion recognition accuracy and fewer fixati

Using computer-extracted image features for modeling of error-making patterns in detection of mammographic masses among radiology residents.

PURPOSE: Mammography is the most widely accepted and utilized screening modality for early breast cancer detection. Providing high quality mammography education to radiology trainees is essential, since excellent interpretation skills are needed to ensure the highest benefit of screening mammography for patients. The authors have previously proposed a computer-aided education system based on trainee models. Those models relate human-assessed image characteristics to trainee error. In this study, the authors propose to build trainee models that utilize features automatically extracted from imag
