OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine if the presence of specific ganglioside-like moieties in Campylobacter lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) is related to the development of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), and to discover how frequently such moieties, including GM1, are present in these LPSs.
METHODS: We studied Campylobacter isolates and sera from seven patients with GBS (five acute motor axonal neuropathy, one acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, and one Fisher's syndrome), and compared them with similar specimens from patients with Campylobacter enteritis alone.
RESULTS: A

OBJECTIVES: To examine the frequency and pathophysiology of micturitional disturbance in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
METHODS: Micturitional symptoms were noted and neurological examinations made repeatedly during admission to hospital of patients with clinical and neurophysiologically definite Guillain-Barré syndrome. Urodynamic studies consisted of uroflowmetry, measurement of residual urine, urethral pressure profilometry, medium fill water cystometry, and external sphincter EMG.
RESULTS: Seven of 28 (25%) patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome showed micturitional disturbance. T

Clinical data are presented of 63 artificially ventilated Guillain-Barré patients. About half of them had an antecedent event. In 57% the disease was heralded by sensory symptoms. The mean progressive phase lasted 12 days, the plateau 12 days and the recovery phase 568 days. In all patients one or more cranial nerves were involved, most often leading to facial palsy or difficulties in swallowing. Three-quarters of the patients had sensory signs, proprioceptive more often than superficial. Autonomic disturbances were common, especially hypertension and tachycardia. Twenty-two percent of the pat

Immunoreactive fibronectin (Fn) was quantified in paired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples from patients with bacterial meningitis (n = 46), tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) (n = 6), HIV infection (n = 6), Guillain-Barré syndrome (n = 5), carcinomatous meningitis (n = 11), multiple sclerosis (n = 15), disk disease (n = 11), and controls (n = 28). A highly significant elevation of CSF Fn was found in bacterial meningitis, TBE, and carcinomatous meningitis. There were no significant differences in serum Fn between any of the groups. An Fn index to estimate the rate of intrathecal Fn synth

S100 protein (S100) was assayed by particle counting immunoassay in serum samples from 50 healthy individuals, 325 patients with various neurological disorders, and 20 patients with malignant melanoma. The detection limit for this protein was 0.3 microgram/L. We detected none in healthy individuals or in 50 patients with multiple sclerosis, 23 with dementia, or 20 with meningitis. S100 was detectable in serum of only a few patients with meningoradiculitis (2/20), peripheral neuropathy (2/30), encephalitis (1/14), Guillain-Barré syndrome (1/25), or AIDS (2/20). In contrast, we observed high con

Simultaneous outbreaks of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and Bell's palsy occurred among residents of Hawaii during the three-month period June through August 1981. The outbreak of GBS (six cases) involved children, while the outbreak of Bell's palsy (22 cases) involved primarily adults. Four of the six patients with GBS had serological evidence of recent infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) v none of 24 control subjects; no such association with CMV infection could be demonstrated for patients with Bell's palsy. The patients with GBS and Bell's palsy lived in widely scattered areas within the

INTRODUCTION: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy that can lead to severe gait impairment and functional limitations in pediatric patients. Although conventional physiotherapy (CT) is the standard of care, recovery is often prolonged and characterized by persistent deficits in strength and motor control. Wearable ankle-exoskeletons have emerged as a potential adjunctive tool for task-specific gait training; however, their application in pediatric GBS remains largely unexplored. The aim of this single case report was to describe the clinic…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of immune-mediated neuropathies (primarily including Guillain-Barré Syndrome and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy) and systematically analyze their associated risk factors, providing a theoretical basis for disease prevention and early intervention.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted. 158 patients with immune-mediated neuropathies admitted to our hospital between January 2020 and December 2023 were selected as the case group, while 160 healthy individuals undergoing physical examinations during th…

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute, immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy that is the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis worldwide. The classical form manifests as an ascending, symmetrical weakness, but atypical variants, including descending presentations, have been increasingly recognized. Such variants often pose diagnostic challenges and are associated with more severe disease and prolonged recovery. We describe a 70-year-old woman with well-controlled hypertension who presented with progressive dysphagia, pooling of saliva, and upper limb weakness. Clinical examination …

AIMS: To study the clinical and electrophysiological profile of patients with GBS and to determine the factors associated with poor functional outcome and need for mechanical ventilation.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: It was a hospital-based prospective observational study.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: 90 patients with GBS diagnosed as per Asbury and Cornblath criteria were enrolled and followed up for 6 months. Various epidemiological, clinical and electrophysiological parameters were evalu…
