A novel class of biofunctional hydrogel-coated microfiber yarns was developed to serve as bioactive sutures for wound closure and tissue regeneration. The microfibrous sutures exhibited remarkable antibacterial and pro-tissue repair capabilities, attributed to their distinctive crosslinking strategy. This strategy involves using PVA, quercetin, and tannic acid to impart exceptional hydrophilicity to the sutures.

We report two patients with a carotid body paraganglioma that extended to the skull base, a position that is surgically inaccessible by means of a traditional lateral cervical approach. In both patients we were able to remove the lesion by performing a double mandibular osteotomy. Both patients underwent preoperative embolization to reduce the mass. We describe a case of post-operative bleeding after a posterior fascial defect repair. This was refractive to exploration and vaginal packing so laparotomy would have been necessary. Superselective cannulation demonstrated bleeding from a branch of the anterior pudendal artery which had crossed the midline making identification difficult during vaginal exploration. The bleeding vessel was embolised using a mixture of PVA300 and Spongistan gel foam and the bleeding ceased. The use of embolisation in the peri-operative phase is discussed.

The authors repaired a medial blow-out fracture by using an endoscopic transnasal technique with a balloon catheter and Merocel packing in 17 subjects.
