RESULTS: Patients with MSA-P had higher putaminal rADC (median 0.791 x 10(3)/mm(2)/s) than both patients with PD (median 0.698 x 10(3)/mm(2)/s, p < 0.001) and healthy volunteers (median 0.727 x 10(3)/mm(2)/s, p < 0.001). There were no significant …

This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of glutamate receptors at spinal synapses on the ascending limb of the micturition reflex. In urethane-anesthetized female rats, a tungsten electrode was inserted stereotaxically into the dorsal part of the rostral pons to record field potentials which were evoked by electrical stimulation of the pelvic nerve (PLN) (1-15 V, 0.05 ms pulse duration at 100-300 Hz, 5-30 ms train duration). The effects of glutamate receptor antagonists administered intrathecally (i.t.) on the PLN-evoked field potentials in the dorsal part of the rostral brainstem were …

Chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids (CLIPPERS) is a rare inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, and many details, including pathological findings, are still unclear. We herein report a man in his 70s who had been diagnosed with CLIPPERS 4.5 years ago. He was treated with corticosteroids, and his symptoms were managed; however, he eventually died of coronavirus disease 2019. A postmortem autopsy revealed perivascular lymphocyte aggregation and demyelination centered in the brainstem and cerebellum. This is the world's first …

MRI enhancement showed abnormal enhancement foci in bilateral pontine brachium and pons. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed Oligoclonal IgG bands were negative. OBJECTIVE: To study the ultrasonographic features of the central nervous system (CNS) in normally developing embryos and fetuses with a crown-rump length (CRL) of 10-84 mm, utilizing a high-frequency transvaginal probe in conjunction with various three-dimensional (3D) imaging modes.
METHODS: From January 2020 to February 2021, 210 normally developing embryos and fetuses in early pregnancy were enrolled and classified based on their gestational age. A high-frequency transvaginal transducer was used to perform 2D and 3D ultrasounds, and the 3D images were saved. These images were then processe

Spastic paretic hemifacial contracture (SPHC) is a rare clinical phenomenon characterized by facial weakness and simultaneous well-sustained contraction of the unilateral half of the face, mimicking a paresis of the normal contralateral side on casual inspection. We present three cases with such phenomenon and have postulated the underlying mechanisms. One patient had intrinsic brainstem glioma, and the others were operated for extra-axial lesions compressing the pons. The former presented with SPHC, whereas the latter two gradually developed this phenomenon following postoperative facial pare…

Ponto-geniculo-occipital or pontine (P) waves have long been recognized as an electrophysiological signature of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. However, P-waves can be observed not just during REM sleep, but also during non-REM (NREM) sleep. Recent studies have uncovered that P-waves are functionally coupled with hippocampal sharp wave ripples (SWRs) during NREM sleep. However, it remains unclear to what extent P-waves during NREM sleep share their characteristics with P-waves during REM sleep and how the functional coupling to P-waves modulates SWRs. Here, we address these issues by performin

DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma) is a deadly cancerous tumor of the brainstem that spreads across the pons. The tumor's infiltrative nature, as well as the tumor's critical pathway and nuclei compression, contributes to the tumor's extremely poor prognosis and limited existing therapeutic options. A previous study revealed that in 40 patients with brainstem glioma, 13 (33%) patients had leptomeningeal spreading. In this paper, we reported a 7-year-old female patient who presented with a history of decreased consciousness and weakness of the right limb. Her magnetic resonance imaging (MR…

OBJECTIVE: Anatomical triangles defined by intersecting neurovascular structures delineate surgical routes to pathological targets and guide neurosurgeons during dissection steps. Collections or systems of anatomical triangles have been integrated into skull base surgery to help surgeons navigate complex regions such as the cavernous sinus. The authors present a system of triangles specifically intended for resection of brainstem cavernous malformations (BSCMs). This system of triangles is complementary to the authors' BSCM taxonomy that defines dissection routes to these lesions.
METHODS: Th

OBJECTIVE: We report a case of chronic lymphocytic inflammation with pontine perivascular enhancement responsive to steroids (CLIPPERS) who achieved durable and steroid-free remission after IV cladribine.
METHODS: A 25 year-old man presented with progressively worsening headaches, polydipsia, dysarthria, diplopia and vertigo, and obtundation requiring respiratory support. CSF revealed lymphocytosis, and MRI revealed a perivascular pattern of punctate enhancement involving the pons. An extensive workup for inflammatory, autoimmune, infective, and malignant explanations was unrevealing. He resp…

White epidermoid cysts are a rare entity that present with atypical signal characteristics on MRI in comparison to typical epidermoid cysts. This can mislead a practitioner when trying to formulate a differential diagnosis based on imaging. We present the case of 15-year-old girl who presented with a pontine-medullar junction mass. This mass did not follow typical signal characteristics for known lesions. The mass was ultimately found to be an epidermoid cyst based on pathology findings. This lesion has rarely been reported in pediatric patients (J Pediatr Neurosci 9(1):52-54, 2014; Singap Med

Urination (also called micturition) is thought to be regulated by a neural network that is distributed in both subcortical and cortical regions. Previously, urination-related neurons have been identified in subcortical structures such as the pontine micturition center (also known as Barrington's nucleus). However, the origin of the descending cortical pathway and how it interfaces with this subcortical circuit to permit voluntary initiation of urination remain elusive. Here we identified a small cluster of layer 5 neurons in the primary motor cortex whose activities tightly correlate with the

Higher cognitive functions require the integration and coordination of large populations of neurons in cortical and subcortical regions. Oscillations in the gamma band (30-45 Hz) of the electroencephalogram (EEG) have been involved in these cognitive functions. In previous studies, we analysed the extent of functional connectivity between cortical areas employing the 'mean squared coherence' analysis of the EEG gamma band. We demonstrated that gamma coherence is maximal during alert wakefulness and is almost absent during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The nucleus pontis oralis (NPO) is criti
