Auditory cortical forward masking effects in squirrel monkeys with unilateral noise-induced hearing loss.

Forward masking provides a sensitive measure of temporal and spectral processing in the auditory system and reflects underlying inhibitory mechanisms in auditory cortex. The present study examined how unilateral, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) alters cortical forward-masking properties in the primary auditory cortex (A1) of squirrel monkeys. Multi-unit responses were recorded from A1 of two control and two NIHL animals six months after right-ear acoustic overstimulation (1 kHz, 136 dB SPL, 3 h). Sequential masker-probe tones were presented with a 10 ms interval while masker frequency was va

Perisaccadic Attentional Updating in Area V4: A Neurocomputational Approach.

Psychophysical studies with human subjects investigated the dynamics of spatial visual attention around the time of saccades. They revealed that attention pointers remap against saccade direction, but at the same time show a lingering at the irrelevant retinotopic position after saccade. Involved brain areas have remained elusive. However, recordings from neurons in visual area V4 of macaques confirm remapping of spatial attention to a position opposite to the saccade direction shortly before saccade onset. Unexpectedly, in comparison with behavioral data from human subjects, a neural correlat

Visual Deficits in Contrast and Depth Perception in Psychotic Disorders: Implications for a Neural Hierarchy.

BACKGROUND: A key challenge in understanding the neurobehavioral mechanisms of psychotic disorders (PDs) is identifying the level and interactions of the affected brain regions. The early visual system, with its hierarchical structure, offers a model for studying such mechanisms. Specifically, variations in visual contrast are detected as early as in the retina, whereas binocular depth perception emerges at a higher level, in the visual cortex. Comparing these processes within individuals can provide insights into the mechanisms and progression of perceptual deficits in PDs. METHODS: Psychoph

Beyond pitch: temporal processing deficits in congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder resulting in impaired pitch perception and memory. Here we investigated whether participants with congenital amusia have deficits in temporal processing of auditory information, in addition to pitch processing deficits. Individuals with amusia (n = 19) and matched controls (n = 21) were presented with sequences of five tones in which one tone was sometimes shifted in pitch or in time, and we adaptively assessed psychophysical thresholds for detecting these shifts. Pitch thresholds of the amusia group were higher (i.e., worse) than those of the

Acute Stress and Autoimmune Markers: Evaluating the Psychoneuroimmunology Axis in Firefighter Recruits.

Chronic psychological stress is known to influence immune function and contribute to development of autoimmune disorders through dysregulated inflammatory responses. This study investigates relationships between acute stress, life trauma, and autoimmune salivary biomarkers in firefighter recruits during psychophysical stress training. Salivary samples were collected from firefighter recruits during two stress tests to evaluate responses to acute stress. Samples were obtained at three time points-pre-stress, post-stress, and recovery-across both tests. Cortisol was measured to characterize acut

Associations Between Audiovisual Integration and Reading Comprehension in Autistic and Non-autistic School-Aged Children.

Although not considered a core feature of autism, autistic children often present with difficulties in reading comprehension, which is a multisensory process involving translation of print to speech sounds (i.e., decoding) and interpreting words in context (i.e., language comprehension). This study tested the hypothesis that audiovisual integration may explain individual differences in reading comprehension, through its relations with decoding and language comprehension, in autistic and non-autistic children. To test our hypothesis, we conducted a concurrent correlational study involving 50 au

Temporal visual processing deficits in post concussion syndrome.

Post-concussive (PCS) motion hypersensitivity represents a common sequela of mild traumatic brain injury. This study investigated whether PCS alters visual temporal resolution thresholds in psychophysical measures that sustain motion detection. Fifteen PCS patients and fifteen age-matched controls underwent critical flicker fusion (CFF) threshold assessments across visual-field eccentricities. A Generalized linear mixed model tested group differences in CFF thresholds, treating eccentricity as a repeated factor and including CFF variability as a covariate. Pupil measurements and catch trials c

A predictive equation for maximum acceptable efforts based on duty cycle in repetitive back-involved tasks.

INTRODUCTION: There are many different tasks involved within a workplace, and assessing the required efforts for performing them depends on factors such as the human's body posture, task nature, and number of repetitions. This study aims to develop an equation for back-involved repetitive tasks that relates the maximum acceptable effort (MAE), the maximum acceptable efforts that an individual can sustain for a specific task and is expressed as a percentage of the maximum strength, to the duty cycle, the amount of time an individual is engaged in a task relative to the total time. The equation

fMRI and gene therapy in adults with CNGB3 mutation.

Achromatopsia is an inherited retinal disease that affects 1 in 30,000-50,000 individuals and is characterised by an absence of functioning cone photoreceptors from birth. This results in severely reduced visual acuity, no colour vision, marked sensitivity to light and involuntary oscillations of the eyes (nystagmus). In most cases, a single gene mutation prevents normal development of cone photoreceptors, with mutations in the CNGB3 or CNGA3 gene being responsible for ∼80 % of all patients with achromatopsia. There are a growing number of studies investigating recovery of cone function after

Impaired contour object perception in psychosis.

Contour integration, the process of joining spatially separated elements into a single unified line, has consistently been found to be impaired in schizophrenia. Recent work suggests that this deficit could be associated with psychotic symptomatology, rather than a specific diagnosis such as schizophrenia. Examining a transdiagnostic sample of participants with psychotic psychopathology, we obtained quantitative indices of contour perception in a psychophysical behavioral task. We found impaired contour discrimination performance among people with psychotic psychopathology (PwPP, n = 62) compa

Body, image, and digital technology in adolescence and contemporary youth culture.

The physical, psychological and social changes that occur during adolescence constitute a physiological crisis that is necessary for development and growth. The establishment of a suitable "self-image" is important for facilitating harmonious psychophysical development during this time. In the current era, digital technology (DT) serves as an extraordinary means of communication for young people, who make significant use of images as a mode of expression. Accordingly, there is growing interest in the relationship between physical development, self-image and use of DT. A review of the published

Pain in the Context of Sensory Deafferentation.

Pain that accompanies deafferentation is one of the most mysterious and misunderstood medical conditions. Prevalence rates for the assorted conditions vary considerably but the most reliable estimates are greater than 50% for strokes involving the somatosensory system, brachial plexus avulsions, spinal cord injury, and limb amputation, with controversy surrounding the mechanistic contributions of deafferentation to ensuing neuropathic pain syndromes. Deafferentation pain has also been described for loss of other body parts (e.g., eyes and breasts) and may contribute to between 10% and upwards

Effect of nystagmus on VEP-based objective visual acuity estimates.

In order to determine the effect of nystagmus on objective visual acuity (VA) estimates, we compared subjective (VApsych) and objective (VEP, VAVEP) VA estimates in participants with nystagmus. For this purpose, 20 participants with nystagmus (NY) caused by idiopathic infantile nystagmus, albinism, achiasma or acquired nystagmus were recruited in this study. Estimates of BCVA (best corrected visual acuity) were determined psychophysically (VApsych; FrACT, Freiburg visual acuity test) and electrophysiologically (VAVEP; EP2000) according to ISCEV (International Society of Clinical Electrophysiol

Transcriptional Profiles of Mitochondrial Dynamics Markers Are Disturbed in Adrenal Glands of Stressed Adult Male Rats.

Mitochondrial dynamics plays a significant role in shaping the mitochondrial network and maintaining mitochondrial function. Imbalanced mitochondrial dynamics can cause mitochondrial dysfunction leading to a wide range of diseases/disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of mitochondrial dynamics markers and regulatory molecules in whole adrenal glands, cortices, and medullae obtained from adult male rats exposed to acute and repeated psychophysical stress, the most common stress in human society. The transcriptional profiles of most of the mitochondrial dynamics mark

Mutational Spectrum, Ocular and Olfactory Phenotypes of CNGB1-Related RP-Olfactory Dysfunction Syndrome in a Multiethnic Cohort.

CNGB1 gene mutations are a well-known cause of autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which was recently associated with olfactory dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to report the molecular spectrum and the ocular and olfactory phenotypes of a multiethnic cohort with CNGB1-associated RP. A cross-sectional case series was conducted at two ophthalmic genetics referral centers. Consecutive patients with molecularly confirmed CNGB1-related RP were included. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination complemented by psychophysical olfactory evaluation. Fifteen pa

Pain associated with COVID-19 vaccination is unrelated to skin biopsy abnormalities.

INTRODUCTION: Previous clinical observations raised the possibility that COVID-19 vaccination might trigger a small-fibre neuropathy. OBJECTIVES: In this uncontrolled observational study, we aimed to identify small fibre damage in patients complaining of generalized sensory symptoms and pain after COVID-19 vaccination. METHODS: We collected clinical data, including a questionnaire for assessing autonomic symptoms (Composite Autonomic Symptom Score-31), and investigated quantitative sensory testing (QST) and skin biopsy in 15 prospectively enrolled patients with generalized sensory symptoms a

The specter of cholera in Libya and North Africa: Natural disasters and anthropization threaten human health during recent years.

INTRODUCTION: According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), in the last year cholera has re-emerged in various areas of the planet, particularly in Africa. The resurgence of this disease is closely linked to poor hygiene, which is sometimes the result of wars or environmental disasters, as in Lebanon and Syria since autumn 2022 and today in Libya. DISCUSSION: The spread of cholera is chiefly caused by the presence of contaminated water, in environments with inadequate hygiene and sanitation. Another cause, however, is the lack of access to adequate vaccination and treatment camp
