Pectoral muscle attenuation as a marker for breast cancer risk in full-field digital mammography.

BACKGROUND: Mammographic percent density is an established marker of breast cancer risk. In a study of screen film mammograms, we recently reported a novel feature from the pectoral muscle region to be associated with breast cancer risk independently of area percent density (APD). We now investigate whether our novel feature is associated with risk in a study based on full-field digital mammography (FFDM). METHODS: We carried out a breast cancer risk analysis using a data set of 3,552 healthy controls and 278 cases. We included three image-based measures in our analyses: volumetric percent de

Clinical accuracy of computer-assisted two-dimensional fluoroscopy for the percutaneous placement of lumbosacral pedicle screws.

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical case series. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical accuracy of computer-assisted two-dimensional fluoroscopy (2D-CAS) for the percutaneous placement of lumbosacral pedicle screws. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Loss of visual anatomic landmarks and reduced tactile feedback increases the risk of pedicle screw misplacement by when using minimally invasive (MIS) percutaneous techniques. However, objective data on screw misplacement in this scenario is lacking. METHODS: A MIS-2D-CAS technique (FluoroNav) was used for the placement of ped

Automated AI-Based Aortic Measurements From Attenuation Correction CT as an Adjunctive Cardiovascular Risk Biomarker: An International Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Aortic enlargement is a powerful predictor of dissection and rupture, yet it is rarely evaluated during routine myocardial perfusion imaging, despite the widespread availability of computed tomography (CT) attenuation correction scans. The aim of this study was to determine whether fully automated, opportunistically derived, artificial intelligence-based aortic measurements from myocardial perfusion imaging CT attenuation correction scans are associated with adverse outcomes in a large multicenter cohort. METHODS: CT attenuation correction scans from patients undergoing positron e

Dual-source photon-counting computed tomography for coronary in-stent observation: influence of heart rate and virtual monoenergetic image.

To investigate the effect of heart rate and virtual monoenergetic image (VMI) on coronary stent imaging in dual-source photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT). A dynamic cardiac phantom was used to vary the heart rate at 50 beats per minute (bpm), 70 bpm, and 90 bpm. Five types of stents (4.0 mm, 3.5 mm, 3.0 mm, 2.75 mm, and 2.5 mm diameter) were scanned at three different locations and reconstructed VMI at 70 keV. In addition, 50% stenosis was assessed for 3.0 mm and 4.0 mm stents. To assess in-stent stenosis, 40 keV, 70 keV, and 100 keV images were compared. Measurable lumen an

Three-Dimensional Characterization of Trabecular Bone Mineral Density of the Distal Radius Utilizing Quantitative Computed Tomography.

Background: Distal radius (DR) fractures demonstrate patterns of predictable fragments. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements of these regions of interest (ROIs) may guide more precise treatment. Methods: Computed tomography (CT) scans of the DR of 42 healthy volunteers (23 female) were analyzed using quantitative CT software, measuring BMD within trabecular bone. Seven ROIs were described by alignment with the distal (volar ulnar distal [VUD], dorsal ulnar distal [DUD], volar radial distal [VRD], and dorsal radial distal [DRD]) or proximal (middle ulnar proximal [MUP], middle proximal [MP],

Three-dimensional finite element model to predict patterns of pterygomaxillary dysjunction during Le Fort I osteotomy.

The aim of this study was to determine whether non-linear three-dimensional finite element analysis (3D-FEA) can be applied to simulate pterygomaxillary dysjunction during Le Fort I osteotomy (LFI) not involving a curved osteotome (LFI-non-COSep), and to predict potential changes in the fracture pattern associated with extending the cutting line. Computed tomography (CT) image data (100 snapshots) after LFI were converted to 3D-CT images. 3D-FEA models were built using preoperative CT matrix data and used to simulate pterygomaxillary dysjunction. The pterygomaxillary dysjunction patterns predi

Relationship of stylohyoid chain and cervical internal carotid artery detected by 3D angiography.

OBJECTIVE: The calcification of the stylohyoid chain (SHC), elongated styloid process (SP), larger SP' angle and its shortened distance of cervical internal carotid artery (CICA) are risk factors for bony compression and the stylocarotid syndrome. METHODS: 3D-CTAs of 125 patients were analyzed in terms of the SP length, its angulations, type of the SHC and relationships of its proximity to the CICA. RESULTS: Elongated SP was observed frequently both in females (47%) and males (55%). The mean distance of the CICA to the SP was calculated as 8.2 ± 3.3 mm. This short distance between the CICA a

Three-dimensional evaluation of healing joint morphology after closed treatment of condylar fractures.

Closed treatment for condylar fractures has long been widely accepted. With closed treatment, the deviated bone fragments heal in their new positions, and this may subsequently cause a range of functional impairments. The association between healing morphology and post-treatment functional impairment is unclear. In this study, computed tomography images of 26 patients (35 sides) who had undergone closed treatment for condylar fractures were used to perform a comparative investigation of three-dimensional (3D) bone morphology before and after treatment. As a result, the morphology of the condyl

Regions of high wall stress can predict the future location of rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Predicting the wall stress in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) using computational modeling may be a useful adjunct to traditional clinical parameters that indicate the risk of rupture. Maximum diameter has been shown to have many limitations, and using current technology it is possible to provide a patient-specific computational risk assessment using routinely acquired medical images. We present a case of AAA rupture where the exact rupture point was clearly visible on the computed tomography (CT) images. A blind computational study based on CT scans acquired 4 months earlier predicted elevate

Technetium-99m-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime lung scintigraphy findings in patients with Behçet's disease.

AIM: Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystem disorder that is characterized by vasculitis, and consists of a triad of recurrent ulcers of the oral and genital mucosa with relapsing uveitis. The prevalence of pulmonary involvement varies in the range of 1-10% in various studies, and its complications are severe and life threatening. To objectively assess the degree of pulmonary vascular endothelial damage in BD, the lung uptake, and the clearance rate of technetium-99m-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (Tc-99m-HMPAO) were determined. METHODS: Twenty-three nonsmoking patients with BD (10 female, 1

Flattening the abdominal aortic tree for effective visualization.

We developed a novel visualization method for providing an uncluttered view of the abdominal aorta and its branches. The method abstracts the complex geometry of vessels using a convex primitive, and uses a sweep line algorithm to find a suboptimal placement of the primitive. The method was evaluated using 10 CT angiography datasets and resulted in a clear visualization with all cluttering intersections removed. The method can be used to convey clinical findings, including lumen patency and lesion locations, in a single two-dimensional image.

The Effect of Position on Radiographic Angle Measurements of the Lower Extremities.

PURPOSE: Accurately measuring an angle on a lower extremity X-ray is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). However, the angle is often affected by position, especially with flexion contracture and rotation. To date, there have been no quantitative analyses examining the relationship between lower extremity angle and patient position and no studies targeting patients with deformities. The aim of this study is to quantify the effect of position on angle measurements in lower extremity X-rays and to compare the effect in patients with different deformities. METH

Central stentoplasty: technique for unipedicular single midline vertebral body stent implantation.

Vertebral body stenting, or stentoplasty, is a novel percutaneous option in spinal cement augmentation. Conventional stentoplasty requires insertion of two paramedian stents per vertebral body through a bipedicular approach. We developed an unipedicular approach in which we implant a single stent into the midline of the vertebral body using cone-beam CT guidance and hereby describe the technical details and feasibility, in this technique that we termed "central stentoplasty."
