Overhead throwing athletes with limited hamstring flexibility should be counseled appropriately regarding their risk for shoulder injury. Baseball players should stretch and prepare their bodies to throw to reduce the compensatory mechanisms that may occur from hamstring stiffness. We aim to identify the association between the contralateral hamstring-popliteal angle and throwing shoulder total range of motion (ROM) in high school baseball players. Fifteen high school varsity baseball players (ages 14-18 years old) volunteered for this observational study. All the athletes played five times a

BACKGROUND: Infants with brachial plexus birth injury who do not recover motor function spontaneously in a timely manner are candidates for brachial plexus reconstruction with nerve autograft. Outcomes of this intervention are incompletely understood. The authors present the long-term outcomes of brachial plexus reconstruction with sural nerve autograft in infants with brachial plexus birth injury.
METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed all infants with brachial plexus birth injury who underwent brachial plexus reconstruction with sural nerve autograft between 1992 and 2014 with a mini

We describe a case with adult onset motor tics after peripheral trauma. A 43-year-old man suffered a left shoulder dislocation during a motorcycle accident 21 years ago. Within 2 weeks after the injury, he noticed the gradual onset of involuntary jerking movements of his left shoulder, which was markedly exacerbated after second left shoulder injury 2 years later. The involuntary movements are phenomenologically identical to tics typically associated with Tourette syndrome (TS), but without the involvement of any other body part and without phonic tics or the typical TS co-morbidities, such as

Shoulder disorders due to overexertion include joint and soft tissues chronic conditions and are an important cause of disability. Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders and has been associated to manual handling of heavy loads, high repetition jobs, exposure to hand-arm vibration and to overhead activities. Diagnosis of shoulder disorders is primarily based on clinical examination; selected cases should be referred to an orthopedic specialist and to imaging. Return to normal activities should be encouraged.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Classically, the shoulder joint is thought to age more by its tendons than by its cartilages, the incidence of rotator cuff tears being considered to increase with age. The purpose of this work was to assess the natural history of the shoulder joint based on a clinical and radiological study of 200 patients aged 70 to 101 years.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cohort was composed of 48 men (34%) and 152 women (76%), aged 84.25 +/- 6.7 years. All patients underwent a physical examination and the Constant score was established. The radiographic examination included an AP view in

A case of endoluminal repair of vein and artery axillary rupture after reduction of shoulder dislocation in an 83-year-old woman is reported. The lesions were repaired successfully with two cover stents (JOSTENT and Passager). Endovascular treatment of such vascular injuries seems to be feasible and safe, though further investigation is warranted.

BACKGROUND: The Snyder classification scheme is the most commonly used system for classifying superior labral injuries. Although this scheme is intended to be used for arthroscopic visual classification only, it is thought that other nonarthroscopic historical variables also influence the classification.
PURPOSE: This study was conducted to evaluate the intrasurgeon and intersurgeon agreement in classifying variable presentations of the superior labrum and to evaluate the influence of clinical variables on the classification and treatment choices of surgeons.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (diag

The shoulder has been the subject of many recent advances in orthopaedic surgery. Arthroscopic evaluation of the glenohumeral joint and subacromial bursa has enabled the physician to increase both diagnostic and management skills. In Part I of this series, the author presents an illustrated examination of the shoulder. A thorough history and comprehensive examination may lead to an accurate diagnosis and management plan, obviating the need for expensive ancillary procedures.

A painful shoulder is a frequent complaint in general practice. In this clinical vignette, we discuss the case of an elderly patient with pain and lack of strength in the right shoulder one month after a hospital stay. The diagnosis is an injury of the accessory nerve after the placement of a central venous catheter in an emergency setting. The different causes of non-orthopaedic causes of shoulder pain are reviewed with emphasis on neurological etiologies.

This article reviews the imaging and common pathology of the long head of biceps tendon and rotator interval (RI). This area of complex anatomy plays a crucial role in normal shoulder function. Injury or abnormality of the RI may contribute to a range of shoulder pathology, such as biceps instability, tendinopathy, and frozen shoulder. Understanding the normal and pathologic appearances of the RI structures is crucial for a correct diagnosis and directing treatment.

BACKGROUND: Axillary nerve injuries are common and typically occur during high-energy, traumatic events. The purpose of this study is to propose a treatment algorithm for acute isolated axillary nerve injuries and report the outcomes of surgically treated patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review identified 14 patients surgically treated for an isolated axillary nerve injury. Axillary nerve neurolysis was performed for all patients, and a triceps branch of the radial nerve was transferred to the axillary nerve in patients without evidence of deltoid function following intraoperative axillary

In the 10 years since the current concept series entitled "The Disabled Throwing Shoulder: Spectrum of Pathology" was conceived and written, many studies have been reported that add much more information to the understanding of the disabled throwing shoulder (DTS). The editors of Arthroscopy and the authors of the original series believed that an update to the original series would be beneficial to provide an organized overview of current knowledge that could update the thought process regarding this problem, provide better assessment and treatment guidelines, and guide further research. Acromion fractures are challenging injuries to manage. Nonoperative treatment for nondisplaced fractures can yield satisfactory outcomes for most patients. Displaced acromion fractures can be difficult to manage given the vector of displacement and limited bone for fixation. There is no consensus on surgical approach to these fractures as they are rare. Acromion fractures in native shoulders are rarer as most acromion fractures are secondary to altered mechanics and decreased bone mineral density following reverse shoulder arthroplasty. The acromion is a thin and flat bone making plate and scr

Without early diagnosis and intervention, brachial plexus birth injuries (BPBIs) can result in permanent upper extremity debilitation. Previously, BPBI was treated by single-specialty surgeons; however, given the complexity of the injury, BPBIs necessitate multidisciplinary team care. Common specialists involved within brachial plexus injury clinics include radiologists, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, occupational therapists, nerve surgeons, and shoulder surgeons. Care plans are meticulously designed by all team members, and depending on injury severity and clinical course, p

The most common form of shoulder instability involves the anterior glenohumeral joint. Often it is associated with labral and bony injuries with subsequent recurrent instability. To determine optimal management, clinicians should perform a detailed history and physical examination, including appropriate diagnostic imaging to assess for concomitant humeral and glenoid bony deficiencies and other soft-tissue pathologies. Early surgical intervention may reduce risk of recurrence, particularly in young, active athletes. This article highlights the relevant anatomy, pathoanatomy, diagnostic examina

The coracoid process of the scapula is in close proximity to major neurovascular structures, including the brachial plexus and the axillary artery and vein. In addition, it serves as a major site of attachment for multiple tendons and ligaments about the shoulder. Isolated coracoid fractures are rare; however, they can be easily overlooked on routine shoulder radiographs. Importantly, when these fractures go undiagnosed, they are at high risk for nonunion. In this paper, we will review the relevant anatomy of the coracoid process, classification schemes for coracoid fractures, mechanisms of in

Particularly challenging after complete brachial plexus avulsion is reestablishing effective hand function, due to limited neurological donors to reanimate the arm. Acute repair of avulsion injuries may enable reinnervation strategies for achieving hand function. This patient presented with pan-brachial plexus injury. Given its irreparable nature, the authors recommended multistage reconstruction, including contralateral C-7 transfer for hand function, multiple intercostal nerves for shoulder/triceps function, shoulder fusion, and spinal accessory nerve-to-musculocutaneous nerve transfer for e
