Influence of social and material individual and area deprivation on suicide mortality among 2.7 million Canadians: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have investigated how area-level deprivation influences the relationship between individual disadvantage and suicide mortality. The aim of this study was to examine individual measures of material and social disadvantage in relation to suicide mortality in Canada and to determine whether these relationships were modified by area deprivation. METHODS: Using the 1991-2001 Canadian Census Mortality Follow-up Study cohort (N = 2,685,400), measures of individual social (civil status, family structure, living alone) and material (education, income, employment) disadvantage w

The flip-side of social capital: the distinctive influences of trust and mistrust on health in rural China.

Despite increasing evidence that social capital is positively associated with health, the pathways that link social capital to health are not definitive and invite further investigation. This paper uses household survey data from 22 villages in China in 2002 to test the relationship between social capital and the self-reported health status of the rural population. Focusing on the cognitive dimension of social capital, this paper complements current social capital research by introducing an overlooked distinction between trust and mistrust. Trust and mistrust are measured at the individual and

Which Social Variables Predict Diabetes Onset? Robust Findings in Two National Surveys.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The role of social factors in diabetes onset has been obscured by wide variation in their conceptualization and operationalization. We apply 3 theoretical frameworks to categorize social relationship variables along several dimensions and identify which dimension(s) are robustly associated with incident diabetes in the older adult population. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (n = 2,365) and the Health and Retirement Study (n =11,824) provided longitudinal data from 57 to 90-year-old respondents over a 4- to 5-year peri

SETTING AND SUBJECTS: community-dwelling older adults in China (N = 7,410 participants aged

The impact on social capital of mobility disability and weight status: the Stockholm Public Health Cohort.

BACKGROUND: People with mobility disability are more often overweight or obese and have lower social capital than people without mobility disability. It is unclear whether having a combination of mobility disability and overweight or obesity furthers negative development of social capital over time. OBJECTIVE: To explore whether there were differences in social capital between normal-weight, overweight and obese people with or without mobility disability over a period of 8 years. METHODS: We included 14,481 individuals (18-64 at baseline) from the Stockholm Public Health Cohort that started

Structure of nods in conversation.

Head nods are a commonly observed gesture in daily conversations and has attracted the interest of many researchers in human, social, and computer sciences since early studies. However, there has been little research focusing on the structure of nod movement, which sometimes involve repetition of upward and downward movements. In this study, we shed light on this structure of nods which has been previously overlooked. Prior to the analysis, we propose systematic conceptualization of nod movement. First, we define a cycle as a consecutive upward and downward movement as the basic unit of analys

Gender-specific pathways linking body dissatisfaction, self-disgust, and social anxiety in Chinese adolescents: A three-wave longitudinal study.

Adolescence is a critical period for physical and psychological development. Body dissatisfaction is a significant concern during this stage, contributing to psychological issues such as social anxiety. However, the longitudinal relationships among body dissatisfaction, self-disgust, and social anxiety, as well as the potential role of gender differences in these dynamics, remain unclear. A total of 1109 junior high school students in China completed the baseline survey, with data collected at three time points (Mage = 12.67 years, SD = 0.68; 51.9% girls). Data were collected using the Body Ar

Community care policy at the intersection of HIV and unemployment crises in South Africa: paradoxes and paradigms.

The community care sector is a major component of social protection systems in South Africa. However, despite considerable investment and policy attention on social protection in South Africa, the community care sector continues to face enormous challenges and pressures. On the one hand, government invests a significant amount in social spending and aims to honour its constitutional responsibilities towards improving the health and social welfare of the country. On the other hand, community-based care workers are socially and economically marginalised, and community care services remain fragme

Shyness versus social phobia in US youth.

OBJECTIVES: Scholars and the popular press have suggested that the diagnostic entity of social phobia "medicalizes" normal human shyness. In this study we examined the plausibility of this hypothesis by (1) determining the frequency of shyness and its overlap with social phobia in a nationally representative adolescent sample, (2) investigating the degree to which shyness and social phobia differ with regard to sociodemographic characteristics, functional impairment, and psychiatric comorbidity, and (3) examining differences in rates of prescribed medication use among youth with shyness and/or

Social capital, poverty, and income inequality as predictors of gonorrhoea, syphilis, chlamydia and AIDS case rates in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Social capital has been related to a number of important public health variables such as child welfare, mortality, and health status. However, the relation of social capital to infectious diseases has received relatively little attention. The relation of social capital to health measures is often posited to be related to the key societal variables of poverty and income inequality. Therefore, any exploration of the correlation between social capital and infectious diseases should also include examination of the association with poverty and income inequality. OBJECTIVE: This study e

Experiences of social participation and inclusion among primary caregivers of children with cerebral palsy in China: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Primary caregivers of children with cerebral palsy (CP) may experience challenges affecting their social participation and inclusion. However, these experiences remain insufficiently understood in the Chinese context. Understanding these experiences is important for family-centred nursing and rehabilitation support. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted with 26 primary caregivers recruited from a tertiary rehabilitation hospital in China. Semi-structured interviews were conducted face-to-face, via WeChat video call, or by telephone. Data were analysed inductively

Exploring Social Interactions and Engagement in Children With Autism During Inclusive and Adapted Tennis Sessions: A Pilot Study.

This pilot study explored patterns of social interaction and engagement in children with autism participating in adapted and inclusive tennis sessions alongside their nonautistic peers. Sixteen children with autism were observed through video analysis of 111 sessions led by coaches trained in autism. Engagement and social interaction were coded using a structured observational system to describe variability across participants and game contexts. Overall, children with autism tended to display predominantly positive interactions during the sessions. Although they interacted more frequently with

"Spinning Their Wheels … "-Influences That Shape How Nurse Educators Teach Social Justice.

Despite institutional claims that social justice is a core professional nursing value, efforts to fulfill this claim remain uneven. The purpose of this study was to examine the circumstances that shape nursing educators' approaches to social justice. In-depth semi-structured interviews with 28 educators teaching theory courses in baccalaureate nursing programs shed light upon the influences that shape how educators integrate social justice. These include formative experiences, institutional factors, and curricular opportunities. Formative experiences include upbringing, educational background,
