Giant cell tumor (GCT) is classified as a benign bone tumor, and it is frequently identified at the epiphysis of long bones and relatively rare in the temporal bone. For orthopedists expert at recognizing bone and soft tissue tumors, the diagnosis of GCT is relatively easy; however, since head and neck surgeons experience few cases of GCT, it may be difficult to diagnose when it occurs in the temporal bone. A 32-year-old man complained of left hearing loss, aural fullness, and tinnitus. Examination of the ear revealed a bulging tumor. Audiologic examination demonstrated conductive hearing loss

CONCLUSION: In patients with progressive conductive hearing loss and a normal tympanic membrane (TM), and with soft tissue density in the middle ear cavity (MEC) on temporal bone computed tomography (TBCT) scan, open-type congenital cholesteatoma (OCC) should be highly suspected and a proper surgical plan that includes mastoid exploration and second-stage operation is required.
OBJECTIVE: The clinical presentation of OCC is very similar to congenital ossicular anomaly (COA) presenting with a conductive hearing loss with intact TM. Therefore, it is challenging to make a correct preoperative di

OBJECTIVE: To describe pre-treatment imaging features of pathologic fractures caused by primary bone tumors (PBTs) and metastatic bone tumors (MBTs) and determine if radiographic or cross-sectional features can differentiate the underlying pathologies associated with the fractures.
METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with a diagnosis of a pathologic fracture were enrolled. Biopsy established PBT as the cause of the pathologic fracture in 16 (23%) cases and MBT in 53 (77%) cases. The radiographs, computed tomography (CT) scans, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the subjects were retrospec

The sternocostoclavicular (SCC) region is subject to the same diseases that occur in joints, with congenital and developmental anomalies, inflammatory and infectious diseases, soft tissue and bone tumors as well as the seronegative spondyloarthropathies, including ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis, enteropathic arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, pustulosis palmoplantaris and other syndromes. Most of these conditions present with swelling of the joint, which may be associated with pain and/or tenderness. These disorders are characterised by onset usually before the age of 40 years, absenc

Total knee replacement (TKR) has become the standard procedure in management of degenerative joint disease with its success depending mainly on two factors: three-dimensional alignment and soft-tissue balancing. The aim of this work was to develop and validate an algorithm to indicate appropriate medial soft tissue release during TKR for varus knees using initial kinematics quantified via navigation techniques. Kinematic data were collected intraoperatively for 46 patients with primary end-stage osteoarthritis undergoing TKR surgery using a computer-tomography-free navigation system. All patie

Imaging evaluation of patients suspected to have arterial injuries of the neck has traditionally been performed by using conventional angiography as an alternative to surgical exploration. However, there has been recent interest in and growing experience with use of noninvasive imaging techniques for the assessment of vascular injuries. Contrast material-enhanced helical computed tomographic (CT) angiography is increasingly being used to evaluate trauma patients in stable condition who are at risk for vascular injuries. It allows characterization of traumatic vascular lesions in the neck such

The benign fibrous histiocytoma is a rare tumor with only a few descriptions. In order to better define the optimal therapeutic procedure and the necessity of surgery we retrospectively analyzed the patients of the orthopedic department. Benign fibrous histiocytoma occurred in the femur (n = 3), pelvis (n = 2), humerus, tibia, fibula, rib and spine. Pain as the cardinal symptom and a median age of 28 years are factors that differentiate benign fibrous histiocytoma from other metaphyseal fibrous lesions such as the nonossifying fibroma. Radiographic investigation of this entity showed osteolyti

How malunion of the distal radius affects the kinematics of the distal radioulnar joint in vivo was evaluated. A novel computed tomography image-based technique was used to quantify radioulnar motion in both wrists of 9 patients who had unilateral malunited distal radius fractures. In the injured wrists dorsal angulation averaged 21 degrees +/- 6 degrees, radial inclination averaged 18 degrees +/- 5 degrees, and radial shortening averaged 21 +/- 3 mm. Clinically, the average range of motion of the injured wrists was 75 degrees +/- 25 degrees pronation and 73 degrees +/- 23 degrees supination.

Although most lesions that occur in the chest have a nonspecific soft-tissue appearance, fat-containing lesions are occasionally encountered at cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging. The various fat-containing lesions of the chest include parenchymal and endobronchial lesions such as hamartoma, lipoid pneumonia, and lipoma. Endobronchial hamartoma usually appears at CT as a lesion with a smooth edge, focal collections of fat, or fat collections that alternate with foci of calcification. Mediastinal fat-containing lesions include germ cell neoplasms, thymolipoma

Tapia's syndrome, first described in 1904 by A.G. Tapia, is considered to be a syndrome consisting of ipsilateral hemiplegia of larynx and tongue with spared movement of soft palate. A 61-year-old Japanese woman had been in good health until August 1991, when she developed hoarseness and atrophy of the left side of her tongue. Although she also showed mild disturbance of elevation of bilateral soft palates and loss of taste in the posterior third of her tongue as well, the main symptoms were the paralyses of the ipsilateral larynx and tongue without involvement of the ipsilateral sternocleidom

Magnetic resonance (MR) images obtained in 18 patients with pathologically confirmed mycetoma in the body (n = 4) or lower extremity (n = 14) were retrospectively reviewed and compared with computed tomographic (CT) scans in 15 patients and surgical findings in 10. T1-weighted images showed an infiltrating mass (same signal intensity as muscle) involving skin, subcutaneous fat, muscles, tendons, and other tissues. On T2-weighted images, the mass and affected structures showed moderately increased signal intensity. Bone marrow involvement was detected in seven patients and was best visualized o

Portable measurement systems using inertial sensors enable motion capture outside the lab, facilitating longitudinal and large-scale studies in natural environments. However, estimating 3D kinematics and kinetics from inertial data for a comprehensive biomechanical movement analysis is still challenging. Machine learning models or stepwise approaches performing Kalman filtering, inverse kinematics, and inverse dynamics can lead to inconsistencies between kinematics and kinetics. We investigated the reconstruction of 3D kinematics and kinetics of arbitrary running motions from inertial sensor d

Tissue stiffness is generally known to be associated with pathologic changes. Ultrasound (US) elastography, on the other hand, is capable of imaging tissue strain, which may or may not be well-correlated with tissue stiffness. Hence, a quantitative comparison between the elastographic tissue strain images and the corresponding tissue modulus images needed to be performed to evaluate the usefulness of elastography in imaging tissue stiffnesss properties. Simulations were performed to demonstrate and quantify the similarities between modulus images and strain elastograms. This was followed by co
