Evidence of Top-Down Sensory Prediction in Neonates Within 2 Days of Birth.

Recent studies have demonstrated top-down modulation in perceptual cortices in infants as young as 6 months. However, it is unclear when and how this ability emerges given conflicting evidence available. This study investigates top-down perceptual modulation by focusing on a neural signature referred to as top-down sensory prediction, where the prediction of upcoming sensory information is exhibited in the modulation of activity in perceptual cortices. We extended a paradigm previously used to identify top-down sensory prediction in 6-month-old infants to neonates. Using functional near-infrar

Language processing in emergencies recruits both language and default mode networks.

Effective language processing in emergencies is crucial for professionals, including firefighters, soldiers, and doctors. Substantial research has been undertaken on language processing in silence, with several studies indicating the impact of noise on language processing in non-emergencies. However, it remains unclear about the neural mechanisms involved in language processing during emergencies, especially the role of the language network (LN) and the default mode network (DMN) in such contexts. In this study, we adopted functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate brain acti

Decoding depression: How DLPFC and SMA mediate stress perception's role in mental health?

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common mental disorder that significantly impacts global well-being. Although stress is a major contributor to depression, not all stress leads to depressive outcomes due to differences in stress perception. Understanding the neural mechanisms of stress perception may help identify biomarkers for targeted interventions to alleviate stress-related depression. METHODS: This study included 113 participants. Each participant completed a Verbal Fluency Task (VFT) while undergoing functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to monitor brain activity. Oxyhemoglobin (Oxy

Inferior Parietal Lobe Activity Reveals Bimanual Coupling and Interference.

When humans move both hands simultaneously, bimanual coupling or interference can occur. The circles-lines paradigm is used to study the bimanual coupling and interference effects: Participants simultaneously draw either lines or circles with both hands (congruent), or draw lines with one hand and circles with the other hand (incongruent condition). Despite extensive behavioral research on bimanual coupling with this paradigm, our knowledge of the neural circuitry involved remains limited. Here, we capitalized on the advantages provided by functional near-infrared spectroscopy to unveil the ne

Forewarned Is Forearmed: The Single- and Dual-Brain Mechanisms in Detectors from Dyads of Varying Social Distance during Deceptive Outcome Evaluation.

Preventing deception requires understanding how lie detectors process social information across social distance. Although the outcomes of such information are crucial, how detectors evaluate gains or losses from close versus distant others remains unclear. Using a sender-receiver paradigm and functional near-infrared spectroscopy hyperscanning, we recruited 66 healthy adult dyads (32 male and 34 female dyads) to investigate how perceived social distance modulates the neural basis in receivers (the detector) during deceptive gain/loss evaluation. The results showed that detectors were more pron

Unlocking the potential of high-resolution multimodality neuromonitoring for traumatic brain injury management: lessons and insights from cases, events, and patterns.

Multimodality neuromonitoring represents a crucial cornerstone for patient management after acute brain injury. Despite the potential of multimodality neuromonitoring (particularly high-resolution neuromonitoring data) to transform care, its full benefits are not yet universally realized. There remains a critical need to integrate the interpretation of complex patterns and indices into the real-time clinical decision-making processes. This requires a multidisciplinary approach, to evaluate and discuss the implications of observed patterns in a timely manner, ideally in close temporal proximity

A Heptamethine Cyanine-Based Near-Infrared Optical Sensor for Copper(II) Detection in Aqueous Solutions and Living Cells.

Copper ions are essential trace elements that play critical roles in redox reactions, signal transduction, energy metabolism, and regulation of the central nervous system. However, excess copper can induce cytotoxicity and contribute to various pathological conditions, highlighting the need for sensitive and selective detection methods. We report a novel near-infrared (NIR) optical sensor, IRPhen, based on a heptamethine cyanine scaffold conjugated with a 1,10-phenanthroline Cu2+-binding receptor. IRPhen exhibits strong NIR absorption and emission (Ex: 750 nm, Em: 808 nm), high sensitivity, an

A Knowledge-Driven Framework Discovers Brain ACtivation-Transition-Spectrum (ACTS) Features for Parkinson's Disease.

Dopaminergic treatment has proved effective to Parkinson's disease (PD), but the conventional treatment assessment is human-administered and prone to intra- and inter-assessor variability. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-driven framework and discover that brain ACtivation-Transition-Spectrum (ACTS) features achieve effective quantified assessments of dopaminergic therapy in PD. Firstly, brain activities of fifty-one PD patients during clinical walking tests under the OFF and ON states (without and with dopaminergic medication) were measured with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNI

Novel multimodal sensing and machine learning strategies to classify cognitive workload in laparoscopic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons can experience elevated cognitive workload (CWL) during surgery due to various factors including operative technicalities and the environmental demands of the operating theatre. This can result in poorer outcomes and have a detrimental effect on surgeon well-being. The objective measurement of CWL provides a potential solution to facilitate classification of workload levels, however results are variable when physiological measures are used in isolation. The aim of this study is to develop and propose a multimodal machine learning (ML) approach to classify CWL levels using
